Title: CJ Saturday
Post by: bruce136 on December 31, 2017, 05:33:51 AM
Visitor center: 5 feet from bank had 5” of ice, but did test holes 10 feet apart going out and each hole lost 1/2” of thickness. Headed back to shore when it was 3.5”. Should be good to go in a few days.

Saw(from the road) a guy fishing off the main boat ramp. Not sure of ice status there.

Marina: thickness was 4” - 5” everywhere we checked. Rusty caught 1 crappie and several gills. Dave the “net boy” Pelfreycaught a few gills. I caught over 50 gills ( only 4 keepers).

It was good to get out.

I think I was the guy you saw off of the main boat launch.  I was drilling as I was walking out.  Every hole was between 4-4.5" of the good stuff.  I'm new to the area so Ive been trying to just get out.  Its been hard not having my ice fishing after moving here from northeastern PA.  This is going to be the year though it seems! Picked up a couple walleyes on tipups.  Struck out on the jigging rod except a couple cracker gills.  Lots of lookers though

Markplusone,
Glad you got a few. There are plenty of us on the board that are usually able to get out on the ice if you need a 2nd (or 6) to go out with you. It’s a little more safe.
I’m planning on going Friday after work. Probably CJ, but I’m open to anywhere.

Thanks for the offer.  Typically I go out on the ice with a group but alas I'm in a new state.   And without getting a deer to make my summer sausage and snack sticks, its been difficult to lure new cohorts. LOL  Now that I know people actually ice fish here, Ill make sure to at least make mention of my plans to see if anyone is willing to go.  I was even thinking about this afternoon/evening.  Anyone else going to be out at C.J.?

I’m thinking about going on Friday. Either the dam area, or the marina…..whichever offers the best opportunity for crappie.

Only 2nd time fishing CJ Brown….any bait stores open at 7am nearby? I only need wax worms.

Good luck and if you see a Frabill shanty say hello

I was there on Friday, and I think that I talked to you briefly about how I was only getting dinks. It was pretty slow, but I did get some nice white bass….never really found the crappie. I did catch a little walleye. Thought that it was a saugeye (can’t tell the difference), but Tin Guppy informed me that there are only walleye in CJ.

I still have trouble telling them apart. Lol
My buddy caught a walleye yesterday and it took awhile for me to decide what it was.

A lot of times its pretty much impossible to positively identify saugeye/walleye apart from each other. I've caught fish I would have sworn were walleye in lakes that only have saugeye and vice versa. I usually just go by where I'm fishing. There's supposed to be some difference in the number of spikes on their fins or something like that but Idk. Doesn't really matter anyway... they're both delicious.

Walleyes have a white spot on the tail fin, saugeyes do not have the spot,  hope you released him, they must be 15 inches or bigger. Still a nice catch.

Yep, he is still out there....hope to catch him in a few years!

Any update on the ice conditions?

Disagree nate. These came from indian. They only stock saugeye. You can see the white on their tail.

It's ok to disagree but the walleye has a distinct white spot on the bottom tip of it's tail. If you Google it that is the way they describe also. I'm no fisheries biologist but that's how I've always checked

Yeah I've heard the same thing and looked on Google and you're right, that's what it says. But I just looked through a bunch of pics of fish I know were saugeye because of where they were caught and all the tails I could see had at least some white on the tip of the tail. Might not be as pronounced as on a pure walleye but it's there. That's why I'm saying I can't ever tell 100% and don't even try.
