Title: Local Crappie action
Post by: Bobberbucket on March 01, 2018, 04:54:41 PM
Decided not to let the rains keep stuck around the house all day. Did some wading at Local lake in NE Ohio. Caught around 60 crappie 7-11” kept 12 . Most of the fish came from 6 fow in & around the weeds. Caught them on a variety of baits. Several on a chartreuse maribou jig  lots of them came on a  1/64th jig with a 1”black Shad gulp picked up a few on a gold #6 thin wire hook and live minnow & some on itty bitty garlands. The action was pretty good despite the miserable conditions. They really wanted the jig moving today couldn’t be lazy with it due to the lack of wind it probably would have been some super hot action if there would have been some chop.

The water was nearly 50 degrees yesterday. Now there’s 7” of snow in my yard so I’m sure all the snow set things back a bit. :-\

We didn't get any snow locally so I'm heading to the local lake tomorrow. Hopefully I will have some pics to post.

Fished Rocky Fork today and only caught 1 crappie on my vibe. Missed a few bites and it amazes me how they don't get hooked with 2 treble hooks on a vibe. Marked a decent number of fish and they chased the vibe but they didn't want to bite. Wind was brutal today too. Oh well, still nice to get out. Think tomorrow I may go after saugeyes at Indian

Never got a bite while fishing for saugeye. Never saw anyone get anything either. Moved to the docks at mound wood and only caught one short crappie.

Sounds like the same story all around. I hit a couple different lakes hooked up with two Crappie lost them both before I could land them. Only caught 3 gills. The wind was awful.

Got out to a local lake for a few hours after work managed to catch a few crappie. Water temp was 43 and the fishing was pretty tough! They were extra slow on the take today really had to wait before setting the hook all of my fish came on an orange 1/64 jig and gulp 1” black Shad. My friends were using other presentations with the same results. Most of the fish were in 6-7 fow dead up in the weeds. It was nice to get out on the water in the sunshine even tho the breeze had a bite to it.

Got out on the water today 3-6-18   at 1:00 quit at 4:30. The action today was fabulous! 6-7 fow up in the weeds water temp was 44 caught around 70 crappie 8-11” few  decent redears in the mix as well. Kept 25 crappie over 9” and a couple redears. I stuck with what’s been working for me orange 1/64th jig and 1” black Shad gulp under a float fishing 2.5-4ft deep. My fishing partner played around with different baits Garlinds tubes and various jig sizes and styles. But the orange 1/64th jig & 1” gulp ruled the day to day the fish just wouldn’t turn it down today! Have to say it was the best open water bite of 2018!

Nice work. I had a pretty good day as well. Prob 50 to 60 crappie. 25 or so keepers with a couple 12s and several 10 to 15 inch saugeye. Bite was great till the wind changed and the temp started dropping. Then it was like someone turned off the light switch. Looks like several days of bad weather coming. Hopefully next week will bring some better conditions.

I’ll tell ya what guys I’m getting sick of waking up and seeing traces of snow on my truck! This just ain’t fair!! Every time I have a good day it’s followed up by cold not that the cold is going to stop me I’ll probably go do some wading today depending on how bad the rain is. I just want some stability to this weather.  The fish yesterday were feeding heavy in prespawn mode caught several females fat with eggs and some of the males had beat up tales like they have been doing some fanning. I know the water is too cold and it’s to early for that but it was interesting. On a side note I wish we could get the pictures working on here!

BB on the other site they are moaning and complaining about everything like that should have been posted in another section. The complainers must not have noticed the ice is gone and they can soft water fish instead of whine. I've been out 9 times since ice out and I am without a boat at the moment. Those fish look good. I need to take a few pics next time I am out but I usually forget.

Way to get after them bobber and Aaron. Looks like another chilly weekend to fish. Don't mind the cold myself but it sure plays havoc with the fish most of the time. Still beats sitting at home.

That other site is full of Nancy non fisherman and the staff caters to that type of people. Lol i don’t miss it over there one bit. I’m much happier posting here and CDC!  I actually got in the habit of taking pictures because of all the trolls they love so much on that garbage site saying pictures or it didn’t happen.

Well it was cold and choppy out there today 3-7-18 got couple little breaks of much appreciated sunshine but mostly it was snow and wind. We were sorta able to tuck out of the wind some but got blown off our anchor a couple times. Managed to locate some active fish in 6-10 fow caught around 50 crappie and a few redears couple ditch pickles in the mix as well. fishing the same presentation that’s been working so well. Kept 13 crappie and 2 redears. Water temp was down to 42.8. They weren’t on fire but the action was pretty good had to do some coaxing they wanted that jig popping and twerking like a Saturday night at the gentleman’s club! All  in all it was a pretty decent day on the water. I’ll throw up the pictures when I get time to crop them down so they will load.

I love the cold especially when it keeps the local lakes pretty much empty except for a few others with the same hopeless addiction to chaseing that bite! You almost never run into inconsiderate people when it’s cold and nasty.

Well maybe I shouldn’t have complained so much about the traces of snow yesterday. Now I’m looking out the window at a good dusting  ::)! With cold temperatures and more snow in the forecast ugh. I’ll probably still chase fish somewhere today.... I really should stay home and get my boat ready but I’m waiting on my trailer to be fixed. Haven’t had my boat out once this year. :(  luckily I’ve got a couple good friends that ain’t scared of the cold that have very kindly taken me out in theirs. Maybe I’ll try some wading today or I’ve got a little river tributary spot that never disappoints. Decisions decisions  ;D . Either way I’ve gotta figure out a way to keep my hands warm usually I just use  cheap thin brow gloves from the gas station they work alright till they get wet. I froze my fingers off yesterday it was beyond unpleasant! Anyone have any suggestions for warm gloves that aren’t so thick? Thick ones keep ya warm but they are a pain in the butt to fish with.

Bobber, try wearing a pair of latex gloves under the brown jersey gloves. If your hands don't stay warm, at least they will stay dry.
Hope you find a decent boat Carl. Good luck.

I’ve never fished Erie smallies but I’m game to give it a shot! I have a camper in central Ohio very near some great smallmouth rivers. I get a good amount of smallie action whenI go out down there.

Fished from 11:30-3:00 it’s was so cold I decided to bring my ice fishing heater I probably looked silly but I don’t care it worked! The fish  were pretty aggressive in the little tributary I fished caught 17 crappie 8-12 inches majority of them were around 10inches. 20 perch and they were some Toads! Biggest was 13.5inches also caught a bunch of ditch pickles  from little 6inchers up to about 3lbs ( LM Bass)  I stopped counting them after 15 they were a nuisance lol.  Got snowed on most of the time but I was sheltered from the winds where I was. All fish were caught on a gold number 6 thin wire hook and minnow under a float fishing 12inches to 4ft deep. I usually try and stay away from live bait but at this location it’s the best option lots of brush in the water in this spot it’s way cheaper to loose the cheap gold hooks than my jigs. My favorite little honey hole lived up to its reputation today. You never know what your gonna hook up with there I had a pike on looked about 20inches the fight wasn’t long before my 4lb broke but it was fun nonetheless! It was a very enjoyable few hours and I good change of pace from all the lake fishing I’ve been doing. All fish were released as I didn’t feel like cleaning any today.

I’m gonna try the latex next time for sure! Someone else also recommend I try that as well I think keeping my hands dry would be a big help in keeping them warm.

Yep big fat girls full of eggs! Funny thing is I caught some large males as well the color difference between them and the females was interesting all the males I caught had almost a grey/blue tint to them. The females had really vibrant colors.

Well it’s another very depressing morning out my window! About an inch of snow in my yard 😡 it’s just sad 😢. I have plans to fish why my amigo Bigeyurk25 today not looking forward to being out in the cold again. But I’m not one to back out on fishing plans due to less than ideal conditions. Living in Ne Ohio it’s just part of the game. The fish still gotta eat every day. If I were to wait for good weather I’d wind up a grumpy miserable couch fisherman watching bill dance reruns. Plus I know once the weather is nice I’ll be working way more than I’m fishing so I gotta get it in while I can. Hopefully we can put some lips on hooks today. Gonna have to find a spot out of the wind might be a return trip to my favorite tributary even to I’m not a fan of fishing the same location 2 days in a row but I know the fish are there and I know they will bite. This weather has gotta start cooperating soon or I’m gonna have to go to PA and kill a groundhog

yeah I know right,  this snow is getting to me ,  good luck out there man .  shoot man those chucks will be out big time soon , I love to whack ground hogs.  ive seen blue walleye before , and the perch are really colorful sometimes . I noticed the perch I caught at nimi this ice some were all spotted with the black dots , I know if cooked properly its safe to eat but I just throw them back.

Well it was tough fishing today the cold snowy night really slowed things down! Only caught   10 fish between the 2 of us 7 of which were caught by me 😁 6 bass and 1 crappie for me. I was putting whoppins on Bigeyurk for the first hour and a half I had him skunked but then he started to dial in on them some. It was chilly but still nice to get out better than sitting on the couch that’s for sure!

Went to Rocky Fork docks yesterday afternoon. As usual, the wind was brutal. Marked a lot of fish and had a lot of risers but only caught 7 fish, 4 crappies (all keepers, 2 12 1/1/2 inchers, 2 gills and 1 short eye). All caught on 3/16 vibe. One of these days I may have to break down and get a phone that takes pics.

Nice!!! Hey with weather we’re having 7 fish is a win! At least you got out. Taking pictures can be a blessing and a curse especially during ice season. Numerous times I’d have my vex loaded up catch a fish start fooling around taking a picture by the time I got done the fish were gone and the screen was blank lol.

The camera on my iPhone takes surprisingly good quality photos. I like it when I catch something with really vivid colors and am able to capture a good photo. It also comes in handy for keeping catch records I used to keep yearly fishing journals but now I just upload them to my Facebook and they show up in my memory’s on there. I still keep journals but now I have an app for that lol technology.

I used to hit up Fremont, Maumee,  but its combat fishing at its finest. the game wardens hide all over in the bushes under the bridges, its a rally for sure, then the white bass stroll in and that's a crazy train. you can catch on a good day 200 fish  :o   but its an experience too try ..

Maybe someday I’ll give the run a shot I’m not much for combat fishing tho. I was gonna go chase crappie today but I got called into work  >:(.  I need a break from this weather so the wife and I decided to book a house in Beaufort SC just a short trip (Friday-Monday) to get a taste of some decent weather. Can’t wait to do some surf fishing I love it! Probably gonna take my crappie rod also just Incase an opportunity presents itself to use it :).

Got out yesterday for a few hours. Decided to hit the rocky fork docks with ice gear. Got there about 2. Fished til 5. 23 keepers and prob as many gills and shorts. Most fish came on 3mm gold tungsten with an orange tail but I caught a couple on a small vmc orange glow spoon. Fish were in 25 to 28 ft of water but the bigger aggressive crappie were up in the water column. Most were about 10 to 12 ft but I caught a couple as shallow as 6 ft. Bite was good all afternoon but the wind started picking up and the temp started dropping and the action slowed down. I've had some good days lately but I'd love to get a day off with warm temps and light winds. Lol. Ready to get the boat out.

Bite was good all afternoon but the wind started picking up and the temp started dropping and the action slowed down. I've had some good days lately but I'd love to get a day off with warm temps and light winds. Lol. Ready to get the boat out.
Nice!!! Looks like the bite is way better down your way the cold temperatures and snow have really slowed things around here for me.

Well its been tough trying to get them on open water tackle. That's why I decided to fish from the docks with ice gear. It seems like when the conditions aren't great it helps to be able to put it right on their nose and make em eat it.

Not a crappie but I did catch a decent size stingray surf fishing in SC yesterday. It was a heck of a fight!

It was the 2nd best fight of any sea creature I’ve ever caught! 2nd only to the yellow fin tuna I caught in Mexico years ago. It was way better than the 4 sharks I caught last year at a different SC beach. The fight lasted about 40 mins and drew a fairly decent crowd.

Got out wading for a few hours yesterday 3-23-18 with Bigeyurk25 couldn’t entice any crappie onto the hook. But we did manage some ok gills and a couple perch. The cold is really making for tough fishing.

The cold is definitely putting a hurt on the crappie action. Caught 1 white bass and 1 really beautiful pumpkinseed yesterday. Lost a couple and missed some bites but that's fishing. Wind was brutal again. Can't wait for a calm day to fish, I won't know how to act.

Hit st marys yesterday. Fished 8 to 630. Wasnt planning on fishing that long. Had 4 keepers at 1 o'clock and was ready to leave but decided to try one more spot. Caught 16 more in the next 2.5 hours all in one brush pile . Bite really picked up once the clouds rolled in. Went back to another spot and started getting a few more. Caught number 29 about 5 o'clock, right when the fish decided to quit biting. Spent the next hour and a half trying to get number 30. Missed 2 and rolled 2 and just couldn't get it done. Got fed up and left 1 short of my limit. Lol. Lots of nice fish. Most were 10 plus and had 5 between 12 and 13 1/2. So overall good day but kinda frustrating. Fighting the wind casting across the channels cost me prob a dozen floats and a couple dozen jigs. Looked like I was decorating Christmas trees. Gonna have to re stock some boxes and re line some poles before I go again. Prob try Thursday if the weather cooperates.

nice catch 30 , sounds like a wounded outing with your gear, kinda like me with all kinds of tackle mishaps.  I know cold water crapps sure are tasty, jam on guys

Got out yesterday wading with a buddy caught around 50 crappie kept 24 between the two of us. Did lots of sorting tons of shorts mostly males. Top producers were maribou jigs specifically  a white beetlebou. Also got a good amount on 1/64 jig and gulp 1 inch black Shad. I’ll throw a couple pictures up after work when I get time to resize them.

Fished st marys again yesterday. 130-530. Private channel where my buddy has a trailer. Got 20 keepers and prob 15 shorts. Not quite the quality size as last time but it was fun. Ended up giving my fish to a family that just bought the trailer next door. Hopefully they'll remember me and continue to let me fish after my buddy sells his place.  ;D
