Title: Nero or nils
Post by: wis2ohio on November 29, 2019, 08:25:27 AM
I’m looking to purchase a new auger but I can’t decide between the Nero and nils, I’m on a tight budget. I mostly fish for crappie but sometimes fish for walleye so I’m thinking a 7 or 8 is best and if anyone has either for sale I would be interested

You going to be hooking it up to a drill, or just hand drilling?  Love my Nils, but they are expensive.  I've seen lots of great review on the Nero.  If you're hooking it up to a drill, I'd also take a strong look at the Strikemaster Lite-Flite.  New for this year, but seems to check off all the right boxes.  It'll be interesting to see how they review from everyone once we get some ice.

I will be attaching it to either a clam plate or straight to the drill depending on what one I get

I have the Nero, 6 inch. I tried the drill adapter once and it worked fine for a couple of holes in 6 in of ice. My drill was the problem, I think. Using it without the drill is very easy. I sharpen the blades on a Worksharp and that works great too. Cabelas has replacement blades for $15. Great hand ice auger at a reasonable price! Made in Russia, if that matters.

I gave him a 8 inch nils with the clam plate adapter,  so he should be good if we get ice.
