Title: Ice Conditions
Post by: futurestrader on December 30, 2012, 02:31:18 PM
Checked it today and about 1.5 inches with heavy snowpack.  It may be ready in a week.  This lake holds some nice size bluegills but smaller bass.

Weight of the snow melted the ice.  That's ok though, the cold temps will refreeze it better this week into the weekend.

Never seen ice melt like that even with snowpack.  Maybe the winds or the warmer temps but both lakes were open water.

I saw it on Berlin once.  The weight of the snow forced water up on the thin ice and the water combined with the snow melted the ice.  Normally it gets cold and the water refreezes and makes superthick ice fairly quickly, but if it doesn't get cold enough fast enough it can melt everything off and you have to start over.

Went down today and 1.5 of clear hard ice.  Wandered out into three foot of water and caught some rinky dink size bluegills so just threw them back.  I see two springs out there in the middle where all the birds were hanging out in the open water sections.

Went to medina lake today.  The crappie bite was good.  Left with 8 keepers.  One was 12".  Try using  chartreuse or white power grubs and twister tails 2'  under a bobber.  Tip with crappie nuggets.  Good luck.

The south end is the deep hole but I was not about to wander out there alone.  Go down the West Side path of the lake about half way down.  It is not as deep and manageable to get out 20 feet off shore.

I stopped by today and checked area off of Granger Road.  Open water at area where people put in canoes.  I think you can plank out to safe ice, but you may want to check for yourself.  There was very little open water.  Just close to the shore, but the rest appeared solid.

Fished the south end today, 15" clear ice at the first spot I went, crossed over to the bank with the houses on it, it got a little slushy at the first point where it cuts back into a cove, the spring is frozen over, but I'd be careful going out in the middle basin across from the water intake, it was only 8" , I'd imagine the furth you go to the middle the thinner it gets, and as usual I didn't catch anything

The middle is the springs once north of that should be good again.
