C.J. Brown / Yikes

I stopped over at CJ a couple days back for some early evening fishing. I marked one fish, got him to strike but I whiffed. That is for the fish and he split. I only spent an hour and a half there just trying to locate something but.... nothing.

If anyone has been there recently and has had luck please post. I was there two weeks ago and could locate anything then either. If anyone has had any luck there recently please leave your comments. At some point I know the Crappie will make their way back to the docks. At least I'm hoping they will.

General Discussion / La Nina is predicted for this year
« on: October 18, 2017, 02:01:11 PM »
Well it looks good for the home team. At least that is what the experts are saying in regards to a cold Winter if that's what you want. I'm guessing we all fall under that category.

As of now the current surface temperatures in the Pacific ocean are below normal. If that continues to hold and Scientist believe it will,  we will get A La Nina Winter.

What does that mean for us in Ohio? Cold arctic air for extended periods through Winter which is exactly what we need. Especially after last season.

I hope to walk on water this year at Lake Erie. That would be a first for me.

Lake Erie / What docks are legal to fish from?
« on: January 21, 2017, 09:11:17 PM »
I've been looking at google overhead to try and get an idea of where I could dock fish in the East Harbor area or Catawba.

I would like to head up for a over night stay and hit some docks in the morning kind of trip but I have no idea what docks you can legally fish from.

I would like to target Crappie and Perch. Any tips on public places would be appreciated.

C.J. Brown / CJ Ice conditions
« on: January 11, 2016, 07:00:05 PM »
Well I have to assume CJ is making some ice. I wanted to get over there today and see if we will have clear ice forming or the cloudy stuff. Was anyone over at the marina today?

Kiser Lake State Park / Are there any docks to fish from?
« on: November 17, 2015, 05:36:23 PM »
The subject tittle says it all. I would like to give Kiser a try before the ice but I'm not seeing a marina or docks to fish from.

Are the docks on the Southeast side of the lake where everyone fishes from?

General Discussion / Changed my mind at the last minute
« on: October 31, 2015, 06:03:44 PM »
Two years ago I bought a Frabil Ice Suit. It is comfortable, very warm and will more than likely last several years.

When I bought it I didn't give floating suits a second thought. I figured they were priced so much higher there was no need to even get wound up over one.

I should have looked. I think the peace of mind that you get from knowing you have help built in to your suit would make for a more relaxing mind set at different times of the season.

I decided this year I was going to get it over with and buy another suit. I had a floating suit in my basket online made it through all the screens when a life jacket made by Mustang popped up in an add........it was my size, U.S Coast Guard certified and it was $41.00 dollars with free shipping.

Looks like I will be waiting for the floatation suit another year.

How many off you wear a life jacket as opposed a floating suit?

Alum Creek Dock Tournaments / Preparing for the Tournament
« on: October 18, 2015, 05:22:19 PM »
Guys I'm bored so I'm starting a thread....

I absolutely can not wait for Nov.1st. I don't know what it is about ice fishing but I personally am addicted to it. I like fishing over the Winter far better than the Summer.

I am still what I consider fairly new to all this. For a short while, I have read back through various threads to see what other people used last year with success.... during this same time frame at each lake within an hour from where I live.  Today, I read through everything posted about Alum hoping to get some tips for Sunday. Thank you Dave, Chris and others for all the tips.

So far I've had a Nills auger and different ice lures show up at my house but still have a few things to get and I'm ready.

Folks we are only a couple weeks out and it's dock time......I'm looking forward to meeting the Alum crew.

Today I set up my poles for Alum and color coded

C.J. Brown / Parking at the camp ground
« on: March 06, 2015, 06:13:10 PM »
Does anyone know if parking back in the campground area is permitted? I was thinking of trying a spot back that way and it would be easier to get to it if I could park back there. I meant to contact the ranger office today but it slipped my mind. Now they are closed obviously.

General Discussion / Weather and how it effects fishing
« on: February 17, 2015, 10:44:46 AM »
Weather Underground has a very informative chart that shows a barometric pressure line rising and falling along with other relevant data. I'm trying to use that information to pick good times to fish or at least see if what I've heard holds true.  So here's my question;

Is fishing considered to be favorable when the air pressure is low?  My father in-law said "it's not necessarily when it's low but when it's steady".  Precipitation plays a part in feeding patterns as well from what I've heard.

So what do you go by or know in regards to weather and fishing?

Thank you to everyone who takes a minute to leave their two cents.

General Discussion / Spud Bar
« on: February 08, 2015, 01:17:49 PM »
The one piece of equipment I should probably own is a spud bar. Just wondering,.... Lowes, Home Depot and others have standard spud bars. Do many of you buy a basic bar or are the ones from Frabil, Clam and other ice bar makers worth the extra $

C.J. Brown / Night fishing at CJ
« on: February 06, 2015, 10:08:57 AM »
Does anyone fish CJ at night?....... If so had any luck?  I may give that a shot tonight.

I can't decide whether or not to hit the Marina or the overlook side.

General Discussion / Choosing the right color
« on: January 27, 2015, 05:41:50 PM »
Curious; When you first hit a lake, what determines the color you will start with. If it's an overcast day do you grab something bright and so on.......

I fish for Crappie and Gills but don't have enough experience on the ice to know what jig, blade or color to start with. The easy answer is to just start somewhere and change things up when nothing working but I'm more interested in hearing what conditions determine what you use.

Lake Erie / Ice fishing at Catawba State Park...walking out
« on: January 22, 2015, 09:49:59 PM »
Do people park there at the Catawba State Park and walk out a short ways or does everyone head way out on snowmobiles? I'm just curious if many people just pull a sled down the ramp and stay fairly close.

If I made the trip up there I guess I would feel better knowing I don't have to walk out a mile just to get on fish. I'm fairly new so the ice still kind of spooks me.

C.J. Brown / Fishing from the docks
« on: November 20, 2014, 11:35:49 AM »
Hello all,

Has permission to fish from the docks started? I know it's not allowed durring the summer for obvious reasons but I was wondering if it's aloud currently.

Thank you
