Boy, I’ve missed you all! This year has been a disaster for me (more to follow) BUT! I can’t wait to be sat on docks with everyone, having a laugh, waiting for the ice and then ice fishing again! Andy!

Indian Lake / Indian Lake Update - 1/21/2019
« on: January 21, 2019, 05:07:31 PM »
All,

The lake looked a lot better today. This morning when I woke it was -14F so a fair amount of ice will have built overnight. It’s been in the single digits all day too.

Anyway, at Long Island first pull-off folks were fishing out on the main lake close to the island. At 3rd pull-off there were a couple of guys fishing on the right hand side as you look towards the bridge. I didn’t see anyone at North Fork.

As ever, I’m letting you know what I saw. Conditions may change quickly and if you go out please use all safety precautions.

Indian Lake / Indian Lake Update - 1/20/2019
« on: January 20, 2019, 03:43:38 PM »
All,

There were folks fishing at Long Island 1st pull-off when I checked things today. They were fishing at the end of the channel that leads out onto the main lake. One of the guys said the ice was 3-4” thick.

The sides at 3rd pull off are still pretty dodgy (slush under 6-8” of snow)

The lake is pretty clear of snow due to high winds we had over the weekend. However; the sides do have a build up on them.

I’m expecting by Thursday we’ll have a lot better ice conditions. Some of the more sheltered areas may have fishable ice now. As always this is what I saw today. Conditions may change quickly and if you are going out, take care and use all precautions to keep safe!

Indian Lake / Indian Lake Update - 12/10/2018
« on: December 10, 2018, 03:33:28 PM »
Hi All,

I heard a report of folks being out on the ice at Indian Lake. There are no signs of anyone being out at Long Island 1st, 2nd, 3rd pull off - not even spud bar marks in the ice.

I checked the ice at my dock and the chisel went through in a single hit. I chiseled some ice out and it?s 1-1/4? thick.

I?ll start posting updates as we get into the cold weather..

Product and Tackle Reviews / Tyepro Jig/Hook Tying Tool
« on: February 18, 2018, 10:41:20 AM »
All,

I used to think that tying tools shown on tv ads were a little gimmicky until I got the TyePro at the Expo. My eyes are not as good as they used to be and threading line through small jigs can be challenging at times (especially in low light conditions on the lake).

Here’s a vid shown it the tool

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9fXnas2lYkI

I’ve also posted a pic of it.

I’ve been using to tool since the Expo and think it’s great. The vid shows how to tie knots with it but, just using it to thread jigs and small hooks speeds things up remarkably. I tie palomar knots usually and it’s simple using the tool.

2 thumbs up from me...

Product and Tackle Reviews / Hawk Bucket Seat
« on: February 15, 2018, 06:15:56 AM »
I bought a Hawk Bucket Seat from Fishermans Warehouse at the Expo. I’ve been using it for the past couple of nights, while fishing, and have to say that it’s very comfortable. The seat snaps onto a 5gal bucket and swivels which gives some freedom of movement. I had a padded bucket seat and the Hawk seat is way more comfortable.

Indian Lake / Indian Lake Fishing Report - 2/13/2018

FishedDunn’s Pond this evening after work on 5-6” of ice. The ice is still ok but starting to get slushy on the top. The sides are also starting to go however I was able to spud out relatively easily. I drilled several holes, marked a few fish and caught an 18” Saugeye right at dark.

General Discussion / Advice to folks with Gas Augers....
« on: February 02, 2018, 09:22:13 PM »
All,

Sooner or, later (hopefully) the ice will recede and we’ll all have to settle back into normal life. This could mean reacquainting with family members such as; wives and kids we haven’t seen for a while and focussing on the honey do list or doing more around the house. If you’ve used your gas auger a lot during the ice season and your wife/significant other asks you to vacuum the house - please remember this is not the way to start a vacuum cleaner:

If anyone has any other tips on how to safely introduce us back into society please share...

Indian Lake / Indian Lake Ice Report - 2/2/2018
« on: February 02, 2018, 07:05:03 PM »
Hi All,

I drove around the lake this evening - here’s what I saw:

- Lake ridge Island/Moundwood to Russell’s Point/Orchard Island has iced over.
- There is open water North of Crystal Beach Island
- Docks close to Moundwood are locked in still.
- Moundwood is iced over up from the bridge to 100yds from the mouth.
- The channel on the other side of the Moundwood Bridge is iced.
- The mouth of Dunn’s pond is iced but no access from Moundwood.
- Areas of the spillway are starting to ice along the bank.
(I fished the spillway for a couple of hours - no bites).
- Russell’s Point/Orchard Island to the West Bank is still locked.
- There is a stretch of open water close to Old Field Island
- Paradise Point is locked still
- Long Island 1st pull off - locked - 1st Pic (5” of ice up to 50yds out)
(There were a couple of guys fishing from 1st pull off)
- Long Island 2nd pull off - locked - 2nd pic (Chisel went through after 2 hits)
- Long Island 3rd pull off (O’Connors side) - no access lots of open water - 3rd Pic
- Long Island 3rd pull off (Pony Island side) - locked 1-1/2” at the bank - 4th Pic
- North Fork - Open to 20yds out from the peninsula you walk around from 2nd pull off

So, the only place that is remotely fishable is 1st pull off. Paradise point area may be fishable however I didn’t check ice thickness.

I am writing off this weekend for fishing. I may go out at 1st pull-off on Sunday however; the rest of the lake is unsafe at this point.

I’ll check things again tomorrow and post results...

Indian Lake / Indian Lake Ice Report 2/1/2018 - The Freeze Begins
« on: February 02, 2018, 06:13:20 AM »
Hi All,

I drove around the South Side of the lake yesterday - here’s what I saw:

- Lake ridge Island/Moundwood to Russell’s Point/Orchard Island is wide open
- Docks close to Moundwood are locked in still
- Moundwood had a 100yd streatch of ice in it (probably came off the main lake)
- Spillway flow and level have fallen - water looks clearer
- Russell’s Point/Orchard Island to the West Bank is still locked
- Paradise Point is locked still

I was surprised at the open water at the Moundwood side of the lake.

We are now going into a cold spell again. We woke to 10F this morning and the high winds we’ve had for the past couple of days have died down. The long range is showing a mix of highs in the 30s/20s and lows in the 20s/teens/single digits. It’s not going to be as cold as the last two cold spells but, enough to give us good ice I believe. If we don’t get out this weekend we will by mid week next week.

I’m going to check out Long Island tonight and try to spud out onto the ice. I’ll let you know what I find.

Andy

Indian Lake / Indian Lake Ice Report - 1/30/2018
« on: January 30, 2018, 06:19:27 PM »
I took a drive down Long Island this evening and had a few surprises. Here’s what I saw:

- Long Island 1st pull off - locked - 1st Pic
- Long Island 2nd pull off - locked - 2nd pic
- Long Island 3rd pull off (O’Connors side) - no access lots of open water - 3rd Pic
- Long Island 3rd pull off (Pony Island side) - locked, some open water close to bank - 4th Pic
- North Fork - Open to 20yds out from the peninsula you walk around from 2nd pull off

With the exception of North Fork this area of the lake looks pretty much the same as the last thaw we had,  with open water in the same spots around docks etc. We’ve had snow here for the past couple of days so there is a build up of snow on the ice. With a high in the 40’s tomorrow this could be a good thing as the snow will melt first and refreeze overnight.

I can’t comment on ice thickness anywhere as I did not check it. There are more exposed lily pad trunks visible and more ice melt has happened during last weeks highs. I’m going to start checking ice thickness at the weekend - this freeze will be longer due to the temps so I’m not expecting any thickness until mid next week at the earliest.

As ever this is a summary of what I saw and in no way am I stating the ice is safe. Always, check the ice If you go out and use all precautions possible.

Pro's Pointers / Short Rods 17” - 18”
« on: January 30, 2018, 07:15:59 AM »
All,

I’ve been interested in using a shorter rod (17” - 18”) for some time now however; the choices are pretty slim. The St Croix Legend Silver/Gold series have been discontinued and replaced with the Legend Black series which has a 17” model. There is also an Avid Ice Rod that has an 18” option. Otherwise, looking at other brands I can’t find anything else.

Does anyone know of other makes/models that are shorter?

Indian Lake / Indian Lake Ice Report 1/29/2018
« on: January 29, 2018, 07:47:29 AM »
All,

Since we have another cool down coming I thought I’d start posting updates on Indian Lake Ice conditions again:

Yesterday I drove around the south side of the lake and it’s still locked in many areas. There is open water in the middle of the lake and some of the channels are open. Paradise Point is still locked.

Overnight we had skim ice form on the lily pad field area at Sassafras Point. A large area iced overnight which means that although we had a warm up the water is still cold and will ice pretty quickly. I’m expecting that the freeze will be slower than the last round due to higher temps.

Not a lot to report right now but I’ll keep an eye on things and post what I find As Ice forms again.
