Nettle lake / 2024 Opener
« on: January 22, 2024, 05:54:30 AM »
Finally got out yesterday afternoon around 3 pm.  I set up over 20FOW on 5" of good ice and 5" of powdered snow, light wind, and plenty of sunshine.  I marked lots of fish but I had no takers using plastics.  It was still a great day to be out.

Nettle lake / 2022 Season Opener For Me...WhooHoo!
« on: January 25, 2022, 02:02:34 PM »
Got out this morning.  It was just gorgeous; sunny, 13F, no wind.  Seven inches of clear ice with a few inches of dry, powdery snow on top.  Others reported catching fish but they must have cleaned out the place before I got there.  Marked a lot of activity in 24 FOW that showed interest but no appetite.  If I had to hazard a guess as to why I got skunked, I would say it was because I didn't buy any new gear or tackle this season.  The fishing industry has gotten so big and powerful that it can pretty much make or break anyone.  It was either that or because I was too lazy to change lures, bait, location.  All that activity can get so tedious on such an absolutely beautiful winter's day.
 Ha!

Nettle lake / Open Water
« on: January 08, 2021, 12:37:58 PM »
Just drove by Nettle; open in the middle.  Heard about a couple that fell in over at Big Turkey Lake in Stuben County west of Angola.  Still way too early in these parts with these temps.

About 1 1/2" at the ramp; clear and smooth; just a dusting of snow.  I was alone without a spud bar so I didn't venture far into to deep water.  Here's hoping it's enough to prevail during this coming warm, daytime air mass.

Swung by Nettle Lake DNR launch ramp this morning.  The lake is mostly covered with ice from what I could see, but there are still many open/wet areas.  The ice that is there shows that the water is or was very high.

Started fishing at dusk this evening for an hour and a half.  Heavy, deep snow on top of heavy, deep slush.  Plenty of ice, though the water was over the fishing holes.  .

Marked a ton of fish in 21FOW from the bottom up five or six feet.  Lots of lookers but no takers on plastics and tiger jigs.  Another guy was doing just as well with a live bait mix.

Did I mention lots of snow and slush?  I'm getting old.

Lake La Sue Ann / 2/7/2018

Wood Duck has 3+" of good ice and lots of snow.  'Gills active on small plastics and tipped jigs at sunup and sunset in ~12FOW; midday, not so much.  Parking lot was plowed.  All downhill to the pond.  All uphill coming off.

Lake La Sue Ann / 1/7/2018 Wood Duck
« on: January 08, 2018, 07:57:15 AM »
1/7/2018

Wood Duck is open sunrise to sunset all year.  Parking for about 1/2 dozen vehicles.  18" minimum on Largemouth; 10 total keepers for 'gills.

Arrived in the afternoon.  Guy coming off had no fish.  Another stayed in the middle then left after a while.  Two more arrived when I was setting up but only stayed in the middle for an hour or so then left.

I set up over 7" of good ice starting on the south end and moved straight across the pond to the north.  Marked just a few fish but that was likely me while I learn my way around my electronic fishing buddy.

Picked up one iffy bass in 7FOW (1# mono, tiger jig, crappie nibble) and only one keeper 'gill in 12FOW near the north end (~8" on the same rig).  The bite was getting better as the sun set.

Nice to finally get out.
