Indian Lake / Re: Indian lake ice conditions 2022

I fished Indian Lake on both Saturday and Sunday.  The ice grew to about 5 inches of clear ice on Sunday in the Long Island area.  I drove around the lake and there was a lot of open water that appeared to go south from the campground to SR 366 across the main lake. There was about 10 guys fishing at Paradise Island.  I saw a lot of open water between McDonalds and the dam.  Also, Moundwood had a lot of open water. I didn't see or hear anything going on at Blackhawk. Hopefully the temps this next week will allow the ice to build.  Saturday was a slow bite but ended up in the same area on Sunday and caught about 20 fish.  All were small.  Mostly bluegill but I did get an 8 inch bass and a couple shiners.  Still looking for the elusive crappie everyone are catching.

Thanks for the update.  I haven't been up there since Christmas and surprised it's locked up that quickly.

We fished Sunday.  We caught a few in the LI area that I've been in for the past 3 weeks but they were real slow.  Not sure if we've spooked them out of there over the last few weeks.

We fish the first pull off of LI.  Start just before sun up until early afternoon.  Caught white bass, perch and blue gill in 6ft of water.  Only got a couple of keeper of blue gill. still on the hunt for those crappie.Ice was 6+ inches.  We should be good for a while now.

Hoping the rain/frozen mix/snow that is supposed to come in Thursday/Friday doesn't do too much damage to the ice. I'll be up there first thing Saturday morning.

The lake was on fire Saturday.  I didn't get many keepers but man I pulled at least 2-3 fish out of every hole I drilled except for one.  Had a great time fishing.  I didn't get to fish Sunday but hopefully it was more of the same.  I may be back up this weekend if the rain on Sunday doesn't create problems but, boy, did anyone see the forecasted low on Sunday.  We are in the negative numbers.

Good deal jk.  I saw a couple of channels I thought about hitting but I've fished in those areas during the summer and didn't get much.  I may have to give it a shot on an outside chance.  There's one near my camper I'm really interested in.  I saw right around 3.5 inches of ice at Long Island.  I didn't get much of a chance to fish as I was working on a Honey Do list but hoping to do more next weekend. Hoping to stay up there Friday night so I can hit it early on Saturday.

I hope you're right.  I stayed overnight last night and bank fished this morning.  Much of the ice from last weekend was destroyed by the rain and warmer temps earlier this week. All of the access points I saw from Long Island to Blackhawk were unsafe.
Thursday looks like warmer temps are coming back in again.

I think this is a repeat of an old question but can anyone give any insight on parking in the Long Island area.  I like to be respectful of the property owners in the area and I really want to get back into the North Fork area to fish.  I've moved away from it the last few years because of the warnings over parking.  I think the state owns some land on the southeast side of 273 right as you come in but pull off appears to be limited.

I drove around the lake yesterday on my way up to Lima and there was a little more ice than last Sunday.  Not much has formed since then.  The surface showed a lot of ice but when I used my spud bar up at Blackhawk it easily busted through.  If we could get a few days that stayed in the 20's I would think we would be good to start.  I hope the rumor of a polar vortex in about 10 days holds true.  I rolled a day of vacation from last year to use just for ice fishing this year.

I was up at Indian on Christmas morning and early evening to pick-up my dad.  There was a good stiff west wind that kept most of the lake moving but ice was starting to form up on the southwest side of the lake around the boat ramp.  In the morning I was surprised to see Blackhawk completely open in the morning but by the evening ice was starting to form up around the docks.  Chippewa still had some open water but looking south across the lake it was also starting to form.  The lake is certainly not quite ready but the water temps are very cold and is on the cusp of giving us something to head out on.  I've been disappointed the last couple of years so I'm hoping for a good year here.

I thought I would get the year started.  Spent several hours moving around the lake from the bank yesterday.  Ice was already starting to form up in the channels.  Blackhawk had some skin ice at many of the docks and Chippewa had some ice as well.  Hopefully the temps will stay cold over the next couple of weeks and we can be on the ice by the middle of January

Indian Lake / Indian Lake Tactics (A Parody)
« on: February 02, 2019, 11:54:30 AM »
I can't tell you how to catch fish on Indian but I can tell you how to avoid catching fish.  In order to avoid catching fish on Indian Lake use red spikes, white spikes and wax worms.  Use sveral different sizes of lures and presentations.  Fish all over 6-7 different areas and 2-3 coves in the Blackhawk area in 5-10 fow.  Fish around weeds and down trees. Use some sort of logic and wisdom based upon the experience of you and your buddy and all that you've read and been taught.  We know these tactics don't work because we've tried all of these things.  A little humor to console the soul after 2 weeks of tough fishing and bruised egos.

Better luck tomorrow for us all.  We got burned last Saturday only pulling 1 gill out after sitting there most of the day.  I'm hoping to hit NF myself tomorrow and have some better luck.
