Got the day off work bc of President's Day. Gonna give Nimmy another shot. Hope the bite is ON ahead of the predicted snowstorm this afternoon.  Might be the last time I pull the shanty without the Smitty. Meeting a couple other OGFers in search of Crappie. Fingers crossed we find'em. Will post our results.

On the ice from 6:15-3:00pm with Ronnie & Lil Rob.
Went out from the State Park Campground Boat Ramp. Ice was 4.5 & crusty. Shoreline was weak & sketchy. 35mph+ winds made things brutal. It wasn't as enjoyable as anticipated.  Drilled North of the island bc of open water on the Southeastern side. Caught a dozen dink Perch. Drilled some darn good spots, but couldn't find any eyes. My 1st Walleye us still swimming.

General Discussion / Ice Conditions
« on: January 20, 2021, 07:08:42 AM »
Weds Jan 20, 2021: Ice conditions are still extremely sketchy for inland lakes in NE Ohio. Very limited areas for ice fisherman to get on & drill some holes.  Mogadore has had ok ice at the Ticknor Road Boat Launch & Parking Lot.  All other areas of Moggy including Congress Lake Road (CLR) have not seen any ice action.

Hopefully the forecast bodes well for ice formation & footprints on our local lakes.

General Discussion / Nimmy Thursday 1/23/2020
« on: January 25, 2020, 07:07:25 AM »
As I lifelong Hardwater guy, I've got to come clean & confess. Yesterday (Thursday 1/23), me & Evinrude58 Carl hit Nimmy at C-1. It's the very first time I was with anyone who had a rope tied around his waist with a 50ft tail just in case he went in. Smart move by Carl. Wish I had thought of it.

Though I've learned to read ice just as good as most experienced hardwater guys, yesterday's ice was the worst I've ever been on... 2.5-3" at best... And it wasn't good, hard, solid, clear ice. The ice didn't look good or feel strong... or ver safe.

I confess: It was treacherous. As I gingerly walked out to meet Carl, I could sense the ice wasn't good at all. Certain types of "cracks" one hears while stepping forward really perk your ears & tighten your nerves. Even though we fished less than 100yds from the boat dock, we were still in 9-11ft of water. We didn't move much.

Water started accumulating around my holes and soon I was in 1/2"-3/4" of water around me.. The ice was starting to sag. NOT A GOOD FEELING. Cautiously I moved to a another spot and within 5 minutes, the water on the ice was surrounding me again. Our skeptical ice was turning to dangerous, deteriorating, soft ice..

I had originally planned to fish after sunset, but my conscience was telling me it was time to go. We only fished a couple of hours.. 1pm-3pm.

IN REALITY, WE SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ON IT., but the urge to be on the hardwater is difficult to ignore.
Yesterday's hardwater experience was thoroughly enjoyable, but dangerous as well. I said a prayer as we loaded our vehicles and spent another hour at the parking lot jawing & telling stories. I even had a nice, fat stogie.

Truth be told: I didn't want to go swimming again. Besides, I didn't wear my Speedos.

General Discussion / CERTIFIED Safe filling system for 1lb Propane Tanks
« on: December 18, 2018, 05:10:29 AM »
For those of you who are unaware, there is a certified safe and legal option for using and refilling and transporting one pound propane tanks. For now there is only one company offering this to the public. It is becoming widely available in major chain stores and on-line.

It's called the Flame King Refill System.

Manual.
http://www.flameking.com/media/wysiwyg/Training_Manual_for_1_lb_cylinder_fillers.pdf

The tanks are designed to blow mist out of a bleeder gauge valve to let you know when the tank is at the 80% full mark as you fill them. The remaining 20% is for expansion of the gas. This removes guessing how much is in it and is how much gas they are supposed to hold.
Please wear thick gloves to protect your skin and wear eye protection.
Always refill away from buildings and open flame or sparks.
After filling a tank, try to hold the 1 pound tank to refill valve tight until the valve  is completely unscrewed to help prevent gas leaking at that connection.

Many of us have switched over to this system for obvious reasons, the number one reason is safety.
The disposable tanks (D.O.T. 39) are illegal to refill and also to transport after refilling.

Some concerns about their recall in the past are noted here:
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received two reports of the connecting valve starting to unscrew from the cylinder. No injuries have been reported.

General Discussion / GEAR & TACKLE SHAKEDOWN
« on: December 08, 2018, 10:48:59 AM »
Since no ice yet as of Saturday 12/8/2018, spent some time in the basement shaking off the dust from the ice gear, equipment and tackle.....Cleaning & reorganizing tackle boxes, buckets and misc gear. Figuring out what new lures & tackle I need to purchase to replenish my bulging tackle boxes.

Haven't touched the rods yet, but that'll happen shortly.

Mosquito Creek Reservoir / Saturday 2/10/18

Decided to fish Skeeter Saturday 2/10 with my son, Nathan. Arrangements confirmed Friday night to meet HurricaneShawn86 at Causeway Bait & Tackle at 6am. He was a NO SHOW. No contact or explanation whatsoever. Fortunately, we met Treeman Jeff at the bait shop. He gave us some tips. Nathan & I decided to fish SW of the causeway., trekked thru the slush & slop 1-1/2 miles down the west side to the stump area we wanted to hit. Jeff was there with his buddies and we ended up sorta bird-dogging him inthe same, general area, but certainly not on top of him or his buddies. Nathan, caught a 16" Eye about 10am and rolled 2 more. I caught 1 nice 12" crappie. Again we caught tons of dink perch.& a few nice gills. RAINS SUCKED. We ran out of minnows and called it quits at 3pm., hiking thru the slush & slop back to the vehicle. My newly built SMITTY really made the trek tremendously easier. By the time we reached the parkin lot, WE WERE SOAKED. My 1st Walleye is still swimming., but all in all, had a wonderful time with my son. Better luck next time. A word of caution: BE LEERY OF HURRICANE SHAWN86.

Mosquito Creek Reservoir / Mosquito Friday 2/2

Fished the DogPark on Friday for 11 hrs from 7am-6pm with Viking Jim & Gordy Billfish. Felt an odd feeling when I pulled into the parking lot & nobody else was there. Eeery feeling about fishing there, but decided to give it a shot. WRONG!!!! I drilled over 40 holes in search of quality fish. Hundreds of dink perch. Only managed to land a few nice perch & gills. My 1st elusive walleye is still swimming.

Long, cold day but enjoyed it despite our meager fishing results.
