Fished Nimmy with Eveinrude Carl Tuesday 1/30 5pm-7:30pm. Ice was in excellent condition. 7" with a little snow on top.  Hardly anyone else on the ice. Man it sure has been a tough bite this season for me. I've put in alot of hours on Nimmy ice resulting in empty bukets at the end of the day. Only 4 perch between the both of us. Another dismal outing. Very exasperating to say the least.

General Discussion / IFO Website Activity

... Gotta say this season is the lowest amount of forum/website activity I've seen on IFO ever. Even during lean years of ice, it seemed there was more chatter and input.

Decided to try the ice despite the high hesitancy and warm temps.  Fished Nimmy  8:30am-1:30pm with son (Nathan), Dan Buckzeye, Evenrude Carl & his grandson, Bobby.  Conditions were wet, rainy & miserable.  Drilled 100 holes in different areas trying to find fish. Drilled in deep weeds, drilled in shallow weeds, drilled in shallow structure, drilled in deep structure.,drilled in deep water...Fished with monnows, minnow heads, waxies, & maggots. Tried flies, spoons, ants, tungsten,... All to no avail. No luck.  Altogether I think we iced 15 perch. Wonderful cloudy day, but the rains really added alot of water on the ice.  Ice was solid 5-6". Shoreline was surprisingly excellent.  Drying everything today.

Fished 5pm-6:15 with EV Carl.  Almost a dead bite.  Bite was almost non-existent. I fished with minnows while Carl fished with waxworms.  Nothing on his Jawjacker either. 11-14fow. Clear water conditions. Marked fish, but nothing biting. We managed to catch 1 fish each.

Surprisingly the shoreline ice was better Thursday than Tuesday.  Still 6".  Uncertain about Saturday (1/27) conditions with the warm temps, SW winds and rains a'comin.  I'm a little leery.

I just got off Nimmy for the late afternoon/early evening bite with my son, Nathan and mousejam James Miller. Started at 5:00pm and fished till 6:45. The bite was ok up till dark, but not the food frenzy of yesterday. Fished the same holes as yesterday. Minnows on gold spoons & glow jigs after sunset. Think the periodic high winds & rains were a factor in shutting the bite down.  We caught 15 perch & 1 gill. Still fishing on 6" of ice, but the shoreline is about kaput. We were the only ones on the ice. Think tonight is the last until we have another cold front.

Hit Nimmy after work. Main body of lake. 17fow. Clear water with a little water on top. Not slushy. 8" of ice. First holes the bite was on. One pole. Non-stop for a solid hour. All Perch. Minnows on the bottom. No time to even light a stogie. Kept a dozen perch. Darkness, Rains & fishing solo drove me off the ice otherwise, I would've continued fishing.  Best rod action I've had at Nimmy so far this season.

Fished Nimmy 4:30-7:30 Saturday 1/20., Jigging & Tip Ups with Minnows/Minnowheads. 2 Perch, 1 Crappie & 2 Stogies. Had an first time experience with one of my tip ups. Line was peeled completely off the spool and 6lb braid was broken. (I didnt check the Tip Ups after dark until I was ready to call it a day).  Think it could've been a huge Catfish, Walleye, Carp or Northern.  Oh well, live & learn even at my old age.  Had a great time anyway.

BTW: The newly constructed SMITTY worked wonderfully.  No drag whatsoever while pulling the shanty & gear.

Brad Crappie Robinson has started this petition:

As me & my fellow outdoorsmen & women converse on issues of our Ohio fisheries, one topic that always comes back is the fact that there is no limit on Bluegills and Crappies on Lake Erie plus Bluegill limits on Inland Ohio waters statewide.

So I, Brad Robinson am starting a petition to start mandating regulations on these two topics.

Reasons For:
. Bigger overall size Crappie & Bluegill populations
. Generate out of state revenue with fisheries that produce world class & Bluegill & Crappie
fiehseries
. Get youth more involved in fishing
. With the advance in fish finding electronics, catch rates are improving making fish
populations more vulnerable to over fishing

Thank you for your time & consideration

Fished Nimmy 8am-6pm Monday 1/15 in a different area. Evinrude Carl and Minnowhead Ray came out to join me in the fun. Fished with minnows & minnowheads all day. HARDLY CAUGHT ANY DINKS. 2 - 20" Channel Cats., DECENT GILLS, CRAPPIE & PERCH. Could've used a Smitty. Must find the time to get it done this week. Gave the cats to Carl.

Fished 8:30-3:30pm This season sofar the bite and catches at Nimmh has been subpar for me.  Shoreline ice was sketchy and many areas inaccessible due to shoreline ice deterioration.  Me and  Dustin parked at the Campground Boatlaunch and worked our way East & South.  Layered Ice made walking a little worrysome. Ice was 6" thick. Worked areas from 5ft to 23ft searching.  Only got consistent readings on our VEX's in shallow weedy areas in the Campground Bay Mostly dinks.  No gills over 7" and no perch over 5".

Had one of my Kahtoola Ice Cleats go bad., it wasn't a true "Warranty Issue".  I wanted to know the cost of replacing the Rubber, not the Steel Cleats. Customer Service Rep., Cat at Kahtoola promptly offered a replacement "Rubber" at NO COST and shipped it immediately!

KUDO'S & A SHOUT OUT TO THEM FOLKS!!

Portage Lakes / PLX Sunday 1/7
« on: January 08, 2018, 06:20:45 AM »
Met Bob at his residence on West Reservoir Sunday., walked down to the ice to see his "Shanty" all set up. His "Shanty" is the Taj Mahal for PLX (truly a Lake Erie Set up).... huge..probably 8x10, wood floor, wood burning stove, internal lights, etc.  Man, what a set up.  Plenty of elbow & standing room.

Sorry to report that in 2 hrs we didnt catch a fish, but the comradere' and conversation was outstanding. (Think the dozens of snowmobilers and ATV's had a lot to do in shutting off the bite). Looking forward to some tight lines from of that shanty before ice out.

Ice fished Nimmy Campground Bay Thursday 4:30pm-8:30pm. Met Lil Rob, Brad, JMShar & Brandon. We fished outside the bay searching the weed lines & drop offs. Brandon & I teamed up drilling & Vex checking. Saw fish, Slow Bite. Crappies, Perch & Gills but nothing to brag about.
A tad nippy out there!!

General Discussion / NEWBIES
« on: January 03, 2018, 10:37:11 AM »
Yesterday Bobberbucket Dave & I took 'newbies" out on the ice for a few hours. (Both of us fished separately and at different waterways).

It's always nice to introduce new ice fisherman to our cold water sport.

Granted, I don't fish as strongly when I bring someone, but nonetheless, it's a pleasure to show someone new the nuances of fishing in cold weather conditions.

All of us "Frigid Fisherman" need to do this more often., including me.

Portage Lakes / PLX Weekday Evenings
« on: January 01, 2018, 07:53:58 AM »
Most likely I'll be hitting PLX (Somewhere in the chain: OSP, Nimmy, North, Nez, Long, etc)., after work (4pm) during the ice season. Thinking I'll fish 4:30-7:30.

Anybody interested in joining is welcomed.

The more, The merrier.

PM me or text.
