I use that trick in tube baits for bass.

Caught a real cat, my brothers, while rigging lines in my room as a teenager.
Never felt more bad for an animal than that.
So, if your dog or cat comes close to your dangling bait remove them or your bait from the situation.

@Snowcone. Do you use the fruity or original flavor alka seltzer? Maybe try putting a piece of rotting meat from your bag in there as well.

Those things are dynamite!  I like the hook on a chain, gives the bait on it a totally different action than on a hook attached with a split ring. I've got a ton of crappie on those spoons. This year purple has been awesome for me.
