Long Island Polar bear club instant member.
« on: February 06, 2013, 01:58:02 PM »

Walked out maybe 40' "checking as always" I stopped and hit the ice, and then a crack from that spud-bar hit to the last one. The next thing I know; I'm swimming and I didn't even have my SpongeBob arm floaties on.

P.S. thanks to everyone that came over to my truck to make sure that I was okay!

was that at the second pull off?? I was at the first pull off today, ( 10:30 - 1:45 and never saw any holes??  I might add that by the time we left, the surface snow was melting very fast and the amount of water on top of the 2.5" of ice was about 1" deep in spots so we scedaddled out of there but many more were still ariving as we left. we caught 15-16 gills between us and maybe 3 keepers in the batch.  Spikes outfished waxies about 4 to 1 today.  We seemed to have been doing as well as anyone else out there that we coud see, lots of smaller fish caught, 1 small perch and no crappies that we heard of.  Its officially over.....

Glad your ok and we were in pucker mode all day....LOL
A whole lot more cracking on the way out then was on the way in....

Bummer on the pucker factor and joining the polar bear club.

On a positive note, at least you and your gear survived the plunge!

8am 1st pull off, Looking back I'm not sure how I got out. I didn't use ice picks, it happened very fast. I am 3 for 5 in the last 5 five years!

welcome to the club. i've joined it a few times myself. luckily it has been in shallow water each time. last time was 2 years ago at moundwood. went through and was back on the ice instantly. looked at the hole in thee ice and thought i know i went through how did i get out without knowing it? it does make for a long walk back. glad you are fine & didn't lose any gear.

Last year I was on a bucket and went strait though feet last. Although its funny now but wasn't then. Every other time I have been walking.
If you haven't tried it I highly do not recommend it!

I haven't been through the ice luckily. But while fishing the vermilion river after ice off I have stepped into a few wash out holes that were deep enough to fill my chest waders without touching bottom. I fully understand the "I know I got out, but what happened" feeling. It isn't fun at all. And don't ever think that just because your cell phone is surronded by neoprene it won't get wet. Glad you got out safe.

I'm the same swedish nipple.  I've never been through the ice but one cold winter day while fly fishing in Utah I slid down a gravel bar and filled my waders.  I didn't think I was coming up actually.  Didn't lose anything but it was a cold ride back home in just my skivvies.
