General Discussion / safety issues we don' think about
« on: February 04, 2014, 09:01:24 PM »
i was gonna post this in the ice safety board, but i thought it would get more views in g.d. board. i brought this up a couple years ago but we've got a lot of new members. first is some kind of traction aid, (ice cleats). the most common injury to ice fishermen is head injuries from falling on the ice.
also, and this scares me more than anything, and i see it all the time is when folks get set up, and finished drilling holes, they lay their auger down without putting the cover on. they set their auger right beside their bucket and sit down. take their kids, their dogs with them. ice is slippery, kids get rowdy, dogs aren't smart, and i've fallen off my bucket more times than i can count. if you're not drilling holes, cover your auger and set it far enough away you, your kids or your pets can't get cut.

General Discussion / not in the Christmas spirit
« on: December 24, 2013, 07:57:52 PM »
my wife lost her uncle sunday (22nd). went to calling hours yesterday (23rd). got home, not 20 minutes later, got a call her step father had passed away. my poor mother in law, losing her brother and then her husband 40 hours apart. she had lunch with her husband in the hospital on the way to calling hours for her brother. he seemed to be getting along fine.
gonna play santa clause later for the grandkids. that should lighten the mood. life is short. enjoy every moment with your friends and loved ones. merry Christmas. see you on the ice. logan

almost. as of 12-28. i was surprised how much ice was there. the shallow (north?) end was locked up. lots of snow, and didn't look good at all. was a spur of the moment thing, and didn't have my spud bar, so i didn't leave the vehicle. the deep end by the dam was starting to freeze around the point. if we can dodge a lot of snow, the deep end may have better ice earlier.

General Discussion / like kids at Christmas
« on: December 20, 2011, 07:52:09 PM »
we all want ice. looking back on 30+ years of ice fishing, and what i've learned. i started out on our farm pond. global warming wasn't even thought of. we always had a week or 2 of -10 degrees. then it warmed up, and i could ice fish. didn't have portable shelters, or buddy heaters. i always waited for 4 inches, and i've never had trouble. i can count on 1 hand the times i've got on the ice before Christmas. now it seldom gets to 0 degrees, more people ice fish, we have the 'net so we can talk to guys up north, shantys, heaters, electronics, -------new toys but no playground. have faith guys. winter will get here. anyone rember 2005? on the ice the 2nd week in dec. ice was gone Christmas eve. never froze back. i'm in central ohio, so guys up north have a better chance. we will ice fish. i remember 1 year i went out 1 weekend, and that was it. we will fish. if i gotta travel to do it.

Fishing Partners / looking for partner ------
« on: November 30, 2011, 07:42:53 PM »
--- with a camera. 1/2 mile from my house is an  old gravel pit. from the bank drops right to 20 fow. i've found some structure with my vex, but i've been told there are trucks and bulldozers and machinery in there. the water is super clear, so a camera would work well there. the fishing is tough sometimes, but i've got 15" crappies and 11 " perch. being so deep, it takes a while to freeze, but if anyone's interested keep in touch.

General Discussion / off season storage question
« on: March 01, 2011, 06:42:30 PM »
i've been hauling my buddy heater around in my truck since my last trip. gonna put it up for the year. there's about 1/2 a tank of gas left. should i leave it on, or take it off and put it on my lantern? maybe it makes no difference. i figure with it on, it'll keep any dirt out of the plumbing. thanks, logan
