General Discussion / Re: Strange noises in the ice
« on: January 09, 2014, 10:52:27 PM »
the thicker the ice gets, the more noise it will make. whenever the temp changes, you will hear the ice talk. as it warms up in the morning it will crack, then calm down till evening. as it cools off, it will start to crack again. the best way i can describe it is a ringing sound.
i've never done the polar plunge, but from talking to those who have say it happens so fast you can,t even shut your eyes. fished buckeye today on 6-7 inches and it was really cracking this morning. the only thing that would scare me off 7 inches of ice would be running out of bait.

General Discussion / not in the Christmas spirit
« on: December 24, 2013, 07:57:52 PM »
my wife lost her uncle sunday (22nd). went to calling hours yesterday (23rd). got home, not 20 minutes later, got a call her step father had passed away. my poor mother in law, losing her brother and then her husband 40 hours apart. she had lunch with her husband in the hospital on the way to calling hours for her brother. he seemed to be getting along fine.
gonna play santa clause later for the grandkids. that should lighten the mood. life is short. enjoy every moment with your friends and loved ones. merry Christmas. see you on the ice. logan

1. ice fishermen are way more friendly.
2. don't need a boat.
3. not that costly to get started.
with that being said, when you're as addicted  as i am, with thousands of dollars in gear, i'm still the friendliest guy on the ice. pulling my sled the size of a bass boat with said gear.

in my experience, some lakes are better than others for crappies after dark. some are on fire, some are dead. bluegills normally don't bite after dark, but i've caught a few. it's fishing, and anything can happen.

General Discussion / Re: Why are you excited for this ice season?
« on: November 25, 2013, 08:21:08 PM »
ice fishing is my favorite sport. the doc told me to get more exercise. after the past few seasons, i thought i'd take up trapping, (my second favorite). i've found out i'm a much better ice fisherman than i am a trapper. broke the bank on trapping equipment this year. broke the bank on ice gear years ago. at least i'll get exercise this year.
i also religiously started my power auger once a month last year. not this year. don't want to jinx  us.
had to go to mansfield today, and all the small ponds were locked up. may have to deal with ice to set traps over thanksgiving. life is good.

Ice Safety!!! / Re: Ice Safety!
« on: November 25, 2013, 07:36:28 PM »
i have the stryker suit. well worth the money. it has "d" rings for my ice picks and so many pockets you need a map to find stuff. i wait till there's 4 inches before i go out. 6 for my kids, and 8 for my kid's kids.
was out last season, on 4" of sketchy ice with 6" of snow on top. i was nervous as "ell. here came a guy with 2 little boys, maybe 6 and 9, walking everywhere, no picks, rope, spud bar, ---just like they were walking through walmart. think guys, no fish is worth dying for.

my last trip out, 3.5 inches of ice, some snow cover. used my spud bar, had my picks around my neck, got set up, fish were bitin', life was good. here comes a guy with 2 little boys, maybe 5 and 8, wandering all over the ice, no rope picks----- no safety gear whatever. i'll fish on 4", i'll take my kids on 6", my kids kids, i want 8. i just hope his kids don't have any ponds around where they can wander on to by themselves.

General Discussion / Re: What's the history of ice fishing, in Ohio?
« on: February 10, 2013, 04:38:02 PM »
i don't remember when i started, late '70's, maybe early '80's. we had a pond that froze every winter. i taped a broken rod to a piece of broom handle with 2 bent nails to wrap line on. chopped holes with an ax. got an auger, thought i had it made. i started fishing shreve lake, and there were plywood shantys people left on the bank. they had signs on them ok to use, just drag off the lake. seems we always had a week, 10 days of sub zero weather, then it would warm up enough to fish ;D.
seasons came and went, some were long, some were as short as a weekend, but as far as i remember i always got to get on the ice.
the '09-2000 season was one of the best i remember. over a foot of ice, clear into march. got a flip over shanty that year. went to 3 day weekends at work, and i REALLY had it made. ;D then came internet, and i got a vex, and on line shopping for things that new technology has came up with, and it just keeps getting better for fishermen, but the weather stinks. if you love to ice fish as much as i do, keep your gear. it doesn't cost you once you have it, and would cost you twice as much to replace it. hop this helps.
