General Discussion / Saugeye The Movie
« on: January 10, 2018, 07:27:53 PM »
All,

Here’s a link to some video clips I took with my Marcum Recon 5+ on Indian Lake last week:

https://youtu.be/xHUvdyUwPlc

I posted a review of the Recon 5+ in the reviews section last week. The clips were recorded during daylight so after early morning bite and before evening bite. The recording quality isn’t the best as I’m still getting the hang of recording/editing. I tried all sorts of lures and jigging techniques but couldn’t get them to bite (Made me remember I’m still a Newbie). The reaction of the fish is interesting when they sniff the bait. I thought it was a scent thing so I wore rubber gloves and still had the same thing. My thought on the Recon 5+ far is the great thing is that you can see what’s going on down there, the bad thing is that you can see what’s going on down there....

General Discussion / How did your boots hold up?
« on: January 10, 2018, 11:15:25 AM »
All,

I think we’ve all agreed that last weeks temperatures were brutal and I’m wondering how everyone’s boots held up? One-off my feet got cold due to vey cold ice. I fixed it by using a rubber mat to put my feet on. The cold foot was uncomfortable but I managed to warm it up. It’s the first time this has happened so Im putting it down to the colder weather....

So, what boots are you wearing and how did they hold up in the cold weather last week?

Indian Lake / Has anyone been out today?
« on: January 09, 2018, 07:01:19 PM »
All,

Had anyone been out today? The Sassafras Point area has standing water/slush on it. I drove to Russell’s Point earlier and saw the same in the South Side of the lake. Just wondering if the ice thickness has reduced much?

General Discussion / How long does frozen walleye last?
« on: January 05, 2018, 08:30:46 PM »
Guys,

I have some frozen walleye dated 7/1/2016 in the freezer. The fish was frozen in bags of water. I’m wondering if it’s still good to eat?

Thoughts?....thanks in advance...

Product and Tackle Reviews / Marcum Recon 5+
« on: January 05, 2018, 05:00:03 AM »
Last season I got a Macrum Recon 5+ (For Christmas) but didn’t get to use it due to the short season we had. This Christmas, Santa brought me a tripod for the camera and a bracket so that I can mount the display to a pole in my shanty. I gave everything a try yesterday and I must say that I am very impressed. Being a noob I don’t have years of experience to rely on and I’m never truly sure what’s going on down there with my jig, bait etc. The Recon 5+ gave me a lot of perspective today. I marked a lot of fish, could see the species, could see the size and how the fish reacted to my presentation and jigging. The unit itself is compact, easy to use and a full charge will last for 10-12hrs. The unit charges via a USB lead so I can easily charge it in my Shanty, the truck or at home. It took a little while to get used to leveling and positioning the camera in the water column but, once I got past that it was easy to keep the camera on my lure. The compactness of the rig did not cause any space issues in my shanty (Eskimo 1 Man Flip) in other words I did not kick the tripod or bump into the screen unit.

Overall I give the Marcum Recon 5+ two thumbs up. It’s a great addition to my kit.

Indian Lake / 1/4/18 Report
« on: January 04, 2018, 07:57:45 PM »
Fished from 11:00am to 5:00pm in 6’ of water on 8-1/2” of ice. There was a breeze when I got out which made it feel a lot colder than it was. I was using a Marcum Recon 5+ for the first time and got to see what was going on below. I had lots of marks, lost 2 at the hole but overall I skunked. The fish seemed to come up to my bait, sniff it and then swim off. I tried several lures and got the most interest on a gold Swedish pimple and pink rattle spoon.

Nevertheless, it was a good day, I learned a lot and can’t wait to get out again tomorrow...

Indian Lake / 8-1/2” Ice.....?
« on: January 04, 2018, 07:46:57 PM »
Today I measured 8-1/2” of ice at North Fork. I didn’t use a very scientific method as I measured the depth using my slush scoop handle (see pics) and then measured the scoop with a tape measure when I got home. I had kicked away all the slush when I drilled holes so I”m pretty sure I was measuring the true ice thickness. I did notice less “bouncing” as snowmobiles went by today....

Thoughts anyone?

Indian Lake / O’Connors Parking.....heads up!
« on: January 04, 2018, 07:32:00 PM »
All,

Wanted to give you a heads up....

Today, I drove to the parking spots at O’Connors (at the boat docks). One of the parked trucks had some fan mail, under the wiper, from a resident threatening to have the truck towed. I don’t think there’s any legal basis for this as the vehicles parked there were not causing an obstruction and parked on a public road.

No cause for cause for concern IMHO....just wanted to give you a heads up....

General Discussion / Request to Minnow Breeders...
« on: January 03, 2018, 09:18:27 PM »
Dear Minnow Breeders,

Can you please remove the Boy Scout gene from your minnows? This will stop my dead stick Minnow thinking it’s a Boy Scout and tying alsorts of knots around my jigging rig. This will also prevent me thinking I have a bite, nearly pulling my dead stick through the ice hole with my jigging rod and then spending 20mins, very confused, unraveling everything. It happened 3 times today.....

Many Thanks,

Andy (not a Boy Scout)

Indian Lake / 1/3/18 Report...
« on: January 03, 2018, 08:35:11 PM »
Fished from 8:00am until 6:00pm at North Fork in 6’ of water. It was cold early in the day (4F) with a breeze. The temp got up to 16F in the afternoon and we got some snow. I caught a saugeye (1st fish of the season) early and then it went dead until later in the afternoon. I had plenty of marks throughout the day, just couldn’t get them to bite. The fish seemed to follow my bait but would not eat. Caught a crappie around 4:00pm and that was it.

Josh fished and schooled me......

A pretty good day overall.....I’ll be back tomorrow for more!

Pro's Pointers / Vibes...
« on: January 01, 2018, 08:02:19 AM »
All,

Where do you get vibes from? I have some but they are rather large and I probably got them at a store, not knowing much about them. I’m looking for 3/16oz. What makes/models do you use?

Thanks in advance...

Andy
