General Discussion / Floating ice suit?
« on: November 22, 2016, 11:05:47 AM »
Hi All, does anyone know of a local (preferrably central Ohio) retailer that has floating ice fishing suits in-store?  I'm planning on buying a set for my wife and myself, but would prefer to try them on rather than simply order online.  We're both girthy, and want to make sure we get the right size.  I'm almost 100% settled on the Striker Ice Climate bibs and jacket because of the quality and versatility.

Thanks for any help!

Alum Creek / How many tip-ups is legal?
« on: February 19, 2015, 08:33:39 AM »
Hi All, heading out to Alum on Sunday, probably the state marina area, and I was wondering how many tip-ups a person can have?  I went to the ODNR website and this is what they had to say:
Anglers may not use more than two fishing lines, whether fastened to a pole, a rod and reel, or hand-held. Anglers may use up to three hooks on each line, except as provided in the Ohio Administrative Code.

Does anyone know if that includes tip-ups or if there's a special rule for ice fishing?  This seems pretty restrictive if it includes tip-ups, and that's really how I read it.  So if you're jigging, you can only have one tip-up out, by my interpretation.

In the past I have used all seven of my tip-ups, but thought I'd check the regulations this morning.  Ignorance is no excuse, but it sure is blissful.

Alum Creek / Thinking of fishing this Saturday
« on: January 28, 2015, 09:52:24 AM »
Hi All,

I'm thinking of trying some ice fishing on Alum for the first time this year.  Does anyone know if the ice is safe?  I understand from previous posts that the ice at the State Marina bay has been fished already and I suspect is fine, but I haven't seen any posts recently.  And with those posts, I'm assuming that the gate is open to the State Marina dock area?

Anyway, this would just be my second time ice fishing Alum; a buddy and I tried last year but got skunked.

any tips?  I'm new to ice fishing, having really only had success pike/bass fishing with tip-ups up on a small lake in Michigan.  Is jigging the way to go for the crappie, walleye and bluegills on Alum?  I'm not looking for anyone's secret tricks, just hoping not to get skunked this time.  Any advice is appreciated!

General Discussion / Advice for ice fishing suite
« on: November 25, 2014, 12:56:07 PM »
Hi All,

I'm rather new to the sport, having only ice fished a few times last winter.  One of those was an ice fishing trip up in the Manistee area of Michigan, and we did pretty well for a few noobs, catching a few pike and bass.  I'm planning a week long trip to the same lake and want to buy a warmer outfit.  Last year it was just jeans with long underwear underneath.  Seeing as I don't ice fish too frequently, I don't want to spend a huge amount, and was thinking the Carhartt Arctic Extreme biberalls for about $130-ish.

I've seen ice fishing specific gear with bibs at around $200, and matching jacket for about $200, and they float which would be nice, but that's a huge increase in price.  Does anyone else use Carthartt bibs and if so, do you like them?

I would also use these locally if Alum freezes up, but the real impetus for this is the weeklong trip to Michigan.  Last year I only had a couple days on the ice, this time I want 6 days from dusk til dawn.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Alum Creek / New to ice fishing, gonna try Alum on Saturday
« on: February 05, 2014, 06:57:22 PM »
HI All, just thought I'd introduce myself and solicit any recommendations.  Reading some of the other posts about Alum, it looks like the fish have been shy.  Regardless, I was thinking of trying around the State marina, or the swim cove south of the State marina.  A buddy and I have a bunch of tip-ups and our jigging rods, and I'll be using a Vexilar for the first time.

Anyway, what do you all think of these spots?
