Seems they are working on one of the flow control gates and had to lower the levels... BE SAFE and STAY OFF for awhile.

Attention NE Ohio ice anglers. I'm working on a story for WKYC TV 3 (my employer) on ice fishing. I'd like to get another interview for it. I'm looking for someone to talk with about how ice fishing has changed over the years, is it better/worse, fading away, and to share some reasons why you enjoy hardwater fishing. Having still pix of some of your trips/catches would be very helpful too! Shoot me a message here or send me an email at [email protected] and I'll do my best to make you a star!

Went on an ice fishing outing with several (40 to 50) folks on Mogadore Saturday. Had a blast. Fished with my son Nick. We caught a ton of fish but no real giants. We kept a nice pile of dinks for a snack. LOL.
Gills, crappie, perch,, bass... They're in there, just gotta find them. Ice was a good 7 inches.
Long walk to our spot behind the third island headed south. Fished 12 FOW and had great success w/ Northland Bro Bug tipped w/ red maggots.
Fun time and even though the long drag almost took me out, I will be back. LOL

Fish were there... Water was stained... They didn't bite well. 8 small gills and a crappie.
Just were in negative mood I guess. Oh well, good to get out. Ice was suprisingly thin, only 4 to 5 inches...

Spent the afternoon from 1:30 til dark out there. What a great day. Pulled in 10 real nice gills and about 30 crappie. Let the crappie go to fight again another day. They were all 8-9 inchers anyway.
Beautiful day on the lake, that's for sure. Going back out this afternoon.
Orange jigs w/ maggots were the ticket. White Bro-Bugs worked well too.

See you on the ice.

Got sort of a late start this AM but made it out on the ice with my son Nick. 4 to 5 inches of ice. Set up in around 6 FOW and immediately started pulling bluegills. We ended up with 60+ fish (lost count) but most were dinks. Did get a small pike or muskie... had no marks on it so I'm thinking muskie. Moved around a couple times but could only weed out 12 or so keepers. All fish were released. Great day to be out. There were 8 or 10 others out too. Silver was the hot color, along with chartruse. We used wax worms.

Went on a drive by today. Saw two guys heading out and stopped to talk. They had walked out a little, drilled and measured with a tape... There was 4" there. Ice was a little white, but looked solid. They set up in front of the tree off to the right of the sheriff's boat house on the opposite shore. They said there was 3 1/2 by the tree.
They did NOT go into the middle of the bay nor up the channel so I can't say what the ice is like there.

Drove around the lakes today. Still lots of open water at Long and East Reserviors. The ice at North and Old State Park looked a little punky too... Still some snow on top. Looks like it's going to be awhile. The wind isn't allowing ice to form on East or Long, plus they are draining water out of Long, which causes current under the existing ice. Bad news there.
Every year, we all get antsy and catch ice fever, but please remember, safety first. I'd much rather read your fishing reports that your obituary.

Carl "Big Daddy" Bachtel here. Glad to find Ice Fish Ohio and get on the site. Hopefully, we'll be on the ice soon. I'm a Pro Staffer for Bass Pro Shops/Rossford, OH and also a member of the Microspoons Pro Staff with my son Nick. We love to fish for everything, all times of the year but I really have a passion for hardwater fishing. I mostly fish NE Ohio lakes, some Lake Erie, and Presque Isle Bay in Erie, PA. Always looking to share info and will post my trips out if you want to meet on the ice.
More later, I'm sure.
Carl
