Grand Lake St. Marys / Re: Skim Ice Grand Lake 12-24-2012
« on: December 28, 2012, 10:11:28 AM »
More ice today (12-28-2012), have not check thickenss but it cannot be too good as the lake was open yesterday.  Good thing the snow came when the lake was open or there would be lots of insulation on top.  Hopefully the cold will continue and the crappies will be willing to bite.

Looks like I missed the first ice contest by guessing today.

Grand Lake St. Marys / Skim Ice Grand Lake 12-24-2012

Nearly the whole lake is covered with skim ice on Christmas eve 2012.  Some open water in the center.  Now it is warming up so it will probably melt.  That might be good since they say snow is coming.  Maybe it will get good and cold after the snow and really lock things up.

Merry Christmas!

I am dying to use my new Vexilar FL-20.  I also want to try my new knowledge after attending the Fin, Feathers and Fur ice fish ohio weekend.  I did get some soft water action in Grand Lake, about 20 crappies from 10-12 inches.

Thanks so much to Dave and crew for putting on the show!  I enjoyed hearing Doug and Joel's talks about ice fishing.  The long drive was no match to the knowledge gained!  The store also helped me stock up for the upcoming season, if it happens.  It is still disheartening to go outside and smell worms instead of seeing snow flakes.  Come on cold weather!

Out Of State Ice Fishing Trips / Re: Devils Lake for ice fishing anyone?
« on: December 03, 2012, 03:05:44 PM »
I went to Devil's LAke about 10 years ago and fished with Ted Robinette.  It was a great trip and I caught about 40 perch a day.  No real monsters, the largest was maybe 112-13 inches.  A couple small walleye were caught as bonus fish while perchin.  Great learning experience for different presentations not normally seen around Ohio.

Send me a private message if you want more info.

I would love to go again, if my budget could handle it.

I hope to hit Indian and Laromie for Saugeye this year, Ferguson/MEtzger in Lima for perch.  If Lake Erie hardens up, I hope to make the trek north for a couple days for some 'eyes.

I saw some skim ice on Grand Lake (Green Lake) St. Marys on some protected bays and shaded channels that were out of the wind on Nov. 29, 2012.  The water temps are there, but now the forecast is calling for warmer temps.  What a bummer!

Indian Lake / Re: Sunday Saugeye

Were they pretty decent sized firefish?  I heard they had been hitting pretty well back at the beginning of the month.  Stiry of my life though, always no time or hear about the bite too late.

On the plus side, I have gotten the shanty out and blew the dust off that accumulated the last two years.  A new Vex FL-20 itching to hit the hard water.  Come on ice!  Hope to see ya out there on the lakes this season.

I have been looking at the hexi fly jig from northlandtackle.com.  They are supposed to show up on the sonar better.  Helps when trying to entice those finicky biters.

Got a brand new Vexilar FL20 with a tri-beam just itching to be broken in on the ice.  Hooks are getting sharpened, inventory being taken for new lures, etc.  Bring on the cold weather so the hard water arrives this year.

It is not looking good.  Other than Sunday, most lows are just barely below freezing for the next ten days.  Highs are high 30's to nearly 50.  Grand Lake is starting to open up right now with the winds.  MAybe it is time to put up the ice gear and start getting out the soft water stuff.

Vexilar / Re: Vexilar Tri-Beam

I just got a tri-beam for my old FL-8.  Dieing to try it out this season, which may be hopeless at this point.  Plan to get an FL-18 or FL-22 for next season and sell the FL-8.
