General Discussion / New Shanty Arrived
« on: November 17, 2018, 06:16:29 AM »
I got my Eskimo Evo 1IT cross-over shanty yesterday.  It is a combo flip-over/pop-up.  It should have lots of room for fishing and it is insulated.  Can't wait to get it assembled today and try it out as soon as we get good ice!  Let's all hope the season is a good one this year.  Do your cold dance.

General Discussion / Sportsmens Direct Sale
« on: October 08, 2018, 07:05:35 AM »
Sportsmensdirect.com currently has a sale on their zero twist minnow.  They are like jigging raps that have a swivel built in through the body that is supposed to reduce line twist.  They are normally $4.50, but on sale for $1.99.  I ordered one of every color in the large size.  Just letting the guys that still check in here during the soft water period.

Grand Lake St. Marys / Grand Lake Opening Up 2-17-2018
« on: February 17, 2018, 05:33:08 AM »
Most of Grand Lake is now open.  Most of the channels still have ice.  We will be fishing crappies very soon. Don't forget to buy your new fishing license on March 1st.

My ice gear gets put away this weekend.  I remember ice fishing on president's day in the good old days.

Lake Loramie State Park / 2018 Season Closeout?
« on: January 21, 2018, 04:50:30 PM »
More than likely closed out this season by catching 6 keeper crappies and a few small bluegills on Loramie today.  Fished several areas and none were stellar spots.  Ice near Luthman road is very thin and will not last too long with 40's for highs. I did not go out since auger went through in just a few turns.  Most fish were from Earl's island area.

Ferguson / Ferguson Ice Survive the Warm Spell?
« on: January 13, 2018, 04:29:42 AM »
Did the ice on Ferguson hold up through the rain and warm spell?  It was getting really wet on top on Wednesday and it stayed well above freezing until noon yesterday.  I want to try it Sunday 1-14-2018 or bresler if possible.  Thanks in advance for any ice or fishing reports.

Lake Loramie State Park / 12-28-2017 Report
« on: December 28, 2017, 08:30:34 PM »
Fished near 119 bridge, West channel from 1:30 - 5:30.  Caught lots of dinky gills and 3 keeper crappie.  Spikes on white and yellow jigs in 5' of water. Very surprised the bite was on with an East wind and high barometer. Temps were around 15f. Ice was about 4-5" thick, nice and clear.

Grand Lake St. Marys / Ugly GLSM Ice 12-23-2017
« on: December 23, 2017, 08:38:39 AM »
With the rain that fell last night on the remaining ice we had and the snow that started falling at daybreak, the ice looks horrible.  1-3" of snow today and another 1-3" tommorow will make a sloppy mess of slush.  I want very little snow since forecast is calling for some cold temps in the next 10 days.  Use your Spud going out and be prepared with dry clothes, your rescue rope and spikes if you get out on the ice.

Grand Lake St. Marys / 12-20-2017 Grand Lake Report
« on: December 20, 2017, 07:03:07 AM »
The warm temps have not completely destroyed the ice yet.  Most of the lake is still covered although there are some open areas.  Forecast looks pretty good after the end of the week and starting about Christmas Eve.  I hope the 1-3" of snow for Thursday the 28th does not happen.  We could be getting on the ice before 2017 disappears!

I need to get my shanty out, the tackle gathered and some spikes in the fridge so I am ready when the ice arrives.

Merry Christmas to all!

Grand Lake St. Marys / Fall 2017 Crappies Yet?
« on: October 01, 2017, 06:17:55 AM »
Anyone been getting any crappies in the channels yet this fall?  Water is still a little warm, but this is about the right time of year.

Hoping to get some fish in the soft water to relieve my hard water fever.

Lima Lake / 1-24-2017 Report
« on: January 26, 2017, 04:43:47 AM »
No ice on Lima Lake but I did get an 18.5" bass and a few 8-11" crappies on 1-24-2017.  I posted a pic of the bass in the 2016/2017 Tournament section.  All fish came on a white 1/32 oz. jig about 6' deep from the fishing dock.

2020/2021 On-line Tournament! / Bass 1-24-2017
« on: January 25, 2017, 05:09:03 AM »
Got an 18.5" 3.04 # largemouth bass from Lima Lake in the evening on January 24, 2017.  It hit a 1/32 oz white jig about 6' deep on 4# test line.  Caught right from the fishing dock.  I usually would not keep a bass but a few 8-11" crappies with it will make a nice meal for the family.  I was way under dressed for the 15 MPH north wind that was supposed to be 7 MPH from south.

Inventions / Auger Cover Strap
« on: January 23, 2017, 04:46:13 AM »
I broke my rubber bungee strap for my 5" Lazer auger a couple of times.  I had been looking around at local bait shops for a replacement a d could not find one.  I ended up getting some small bungee cord at Dunham's for around $3.  I used two together and they seem to do OK at keeping the cover on.  I just hope they last.  They sure won't be getting worn out this season.

Grand Lake St. Marys / Throw in the Towel on 2016/2017 Season?
« on: January 14, 2017, 07:13:19 AM »
Not even a low temp at or below the freezing mark through Jan 23 for our area.  Highs are in the mid to high 50's through the 23 of Jan.  I might throw in the Towel for this season.  My grass went back to green again.  I might be mowing by the end of the week instead of pushing the snowblower.  Between the warm weather, work, kids and being sick, I have lost most desire to get back out on the ice.  The lake is pretty much open again.

Grand Lake St. Marys / Grand Lake Open 12/30/2016
« on: December 30, 2016, 08:05:27 AM »
From what I can tell, most of the open part of the lake is now open water.  Shoreline ice was really weak yesterday.  The wind overnight after the warm temps yesterday pretty much took care of the ice.  With the temps back up into the 50's and rain over the weekend and beginning of next week, maybe the water level will go back up before we get ice again.
