Title: NE OHIO PAN FISH SERIES PORTAGE LAKES EVENT
Post by: Ntoiceman36 on January 25, 2016, 08:08:12 PM
OK guys one down four to go! This Sunday January 31st is the second stop in the series. But once again we are facing a considerable warm up with the threat of rain. Anyone checking the ice please keep me informed it would be a great help. Stay tuned for updates. I will post updates as soon as I can. Thank you.

So which Portage Lakes are included for this tourney?  Maybe just missed it but can’t find it listed anywhere.  Pretty critical information assume most people would like to know beforehand.  Jerry at Long Lake Bait & Tackle told me on Thursday that it was on Long Lake only.  Yesterday someone else told me he was almost positive both North Res. and Long.  If so does that also include Hower Lake?  Any others?

At the tournament last Sunday he said it was north and long lake.

Usually they are the last lakes I get on. Limited areas have good ice. May be interesting. Going to go out and pre fish this week.

We will fish long lake and north reservoir from the odnr to portage lakes drive, we will all leave from long lake baits at the same time after check in is complete. Please bring your entry fee in small bills to make things run smoother,it's hard to keep enough change available. Also please bring a bucket to place your fish in with water for weigh in. Stay tuned for further ice updates with the approaching warm up. Also the Akron beacon journal will be at the event photographing and asking a few questions. Thanks in advance.

So half of North including the deeper water is off-limits?

Sorry Nate, you posted before I could finish editing.

And fish need to be alive at weigh-in?

Not necessarily alive but they can't look like they were caught 3 days ago. As I move forward with this series please bear with me as we go through some growing pains. I'm working very hard to stream line things and make them run as smoothly as possible. My ears are always open for positive feedback, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also if some information seems to be missing please be patient and it will be filled in as soon as possible. It's very frustrating to keep things coordinated with the weather patterns we are experiencing this season! Thanks for your patience and stay tuned for further details .

Some kind of map with the fishable area outlined may help. Just general map with a day of call on areas that ark known to be unsafe.

Rethinking my game plan after knowing you can't fish all of north. But not exactly sure what parts of the lake will be able to be fished.

Not my call but assume a line basically parallel to PLX DR just touching the back (West side) of the moat would be the easiest to see limit.  Essentially stand on the shore end of the ramp dock and look north to the back side of the moat and that's the line.  Maybe use east side of the large point on the north shore as the end of the line from the moat north.  Maybe use the parking lot light pole beside the ramp as a marker looking south from the back of the moat.
Haven't checked all over and no guarantee but the only bad ice aware of at North other than the springs was the SE corner from the island by the inlet from West Res. over to the outlet down to Long. Good part of that may have firmed up though too.

Same with long. You have 4 creeks, spillways and river entrances/exits in the lake. I fished T's tourniment for the 3 years he had them there. I took second the first year and first the other 3. That was total weight for gills 6" or bigger. Think I weighed in 27 lbs the last year. That was fun but that spot is a loooooong walk.

Sadly, I think team Ryan/Eric is out this week, looking at the temps this weekend, we are not going to feel very safe. Good luck everyone, will let you know if it changes and will make it.

A map showing fish able areas would really be helpful for people like me who don't know the lake or area.

Does anyone know what the hours of the bait store are?

Sorry Nate,  realize it is difficult but making major changes back and forth like this at the last minute is not very good.

Also, the ice on Long Lake is not that thick overall but variable.  There are some areas that are only 3 ½”.
North Res. is closer to that overall but there also are a few open holes on North too.

I appreciate any input I receive regarding the events, but I must express that any decisions are made after consulting with fellow fishermen and what the MAJORITY  of the fishing field is requesting  not the minority. I must once again stress the fact that I am one individual running these events who works a more than full time job. I apologize if the way this event is being directed does not satisfy each person,I do the best I can in coordinating each event in the time I have available. It is up to each fishermen to decide if the event is the right fit for them. They are all open events, you can fish them or not.

Your doing a great job man. I run Parks and Recreation events and programs for a living so I know not everyone can be happy even if it was your full time job.

I stoped by the bait store today. The guy that runs it is really nice. He opens at 7 every day if he is not there ring the bell. I don't remember when he said he closed but he said anytime you needed bait ring the bell and he would come down. He lives upstairs. Tourniment day he will be open at 6. He has some ice equipment and lures. The is actualy a bunch of stuff in there. More than I thought there would be.

Thanks fishingful, long lake baits has been a huge help for this series. He's open from 7 to 7,but like you said ring the bell and he will assist you. Stop in and see what's happening inside and say hello.

I'm going to watch reports before I make a decision. It would be a long wet ride home.
Title: Re: NE OHIO PAN FISH SERIES PORTAGE LAKES EVENT
Post by: nixmkt on January 28, 2016, 07:49:45 PM
It is true that you will never be able to please everyone and your decisions are only ones that matter.  Just having a hard time comprehending that the MAJORITY of the fishing field requested that the allowable fishing area on North be reduced to only approximately half of the reservoir and then that same MAJORITY of the fishing field collectively changed their minds and requested the entire reservoir area be opened back up.
Title: Re: NE OHIO PAN FISH SERIES PORTAGE LAKES EVENT
Post by: Ntoiceman36 on January 28, 2016, 08:00:00 PM
I actually made the call to limit the area due to sketchy ice and also by limiting the area it allowed me to better see the field . That's when the majority started requesting it be opened back up. Safety is my number one concern and just like the wingfoot event I will PERSONALLY check conditions before making a final decision

Talked to Long Bait today. He says his parking lot will only hold 15 cars max. So he suggested if you are planning on fishing North ( like I am) that it would help if we park at North and walk over to check in/weigh in.

It may be 5” in the immediate area where you are but at least two people have posted now about finding areas with only 3” to 3 ½”  on Long Lake and I personally know of two other people that have found those or similar areas.  Please do not get people overconfident.  Those without firsthand knowledge of the ice on Long Lake specifically where they are planning on going need to be very careful with the warm temps, sun and wind combined.

Just came off long lake the ice that was there is holding up well,5-6 inches clear. But as we all know THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SAFE ICE!! I got similar reports from the guys coming off north reservoir. There are some areas of 3-3.5 so we must use common sense and be careful. The tournament will proceed as scheduled, good luck and see you in the am.
