Portage Lakes / OSP 12-27-22
« on: December 27, 2022, 10:36:58 PM »
Had a great night at work on the 26th, so I thought I'd get out on the first ice before the warm up. I went out about 4:30pm to hit the evening bite. Ice was good. I measured 5.5" in my spot. Clear ice topped with about an inch or so of white ice. Fished in 7ft of water, and was pulling crappie out left and right. Caught 8 crappie, and kept 4. The others were just shy of 9". My keepers were 10", 10.25", 10.5" and 11". I can't make that up. Caught a few small gills and a warmouth. All in all, not a bad way to start my 2022-2023 season.

It was nice to meet all of you yesterday, and put faces together with screen names. I didn't catch anything but a zebra mussel, but it was still nice to get out and fish.

I started stocking up since summer. I had a hard time last season finding some. Lowes and Home Depot usually have them in stock.

I almost got skunked until I landed an 8" perch, and had a bass snap my line. I need to find better spots to fish.

Went out to the OSP ramp to get the day started. Ice was 6-7" in the larger channel, right between the Sheriff's boat house and the golf course. Saw a lot of bluegill on my camera, but no bites. I moved to just south of the sail boat club, where the buoy for the speed zone sits during the summer for Turkeyfoot Lake. Around 5" in that area.

There is a large crack in the ice with a small area of open water, extending from the peninsula, headed towards Mud Lake.

Save some fish for me, Slab. Next time I'll be out is Monday. Work always gets in the way.

Started early this morning. Went out at the S. Main St. ramp. All the slush from the heatwave froze solid. Drilled a lot of holes, and had 4" of clear ice and an inch of cloudy ice on top.

Thanks Slab and Baum. That definitely helped me with what to bring. I'm thinking about going this Saturday.

Just curious to know if people use either ice or soft water poles for these tournaments?

Haven't heard that, but I did catch a nice 22" 'eye this past summer. I released it, since I didn't have a stringer or something to put it in. They are out there.
