There was a decent base when you got out away from the bank at mound wood, it might make the area near the bank a little sloppy

I have the FL-18 Ultra and the battery is fully encased with charging ports on the front of the unit. No matter what pack you go with, you can carry the battery right on the pack. The Blue Genz pack is the cheapest, but it doesn't have the charging ports.. still it's not a big deal to charge them that way... the biggest thing is that with the more economical packs, you have to buy the battery guage and all that separate

Flashers are great, and a lot of different companies have their own models. You can get one reconditioned from Vexilar.com if you want to save some cash. They range from the most basic FL-8 to the more advanced FL-12 which is a great flasher. Then there are the FL-18 and FL-20 models which actually have a split screen that shows the whole water column on the right side and a zoomed image of the bottom six feet. You can also get deep water models in the FL-20 (and maybe also the FL-18). In addition they have transducers that emit a cone of sonar at varying angles from 9 degrees all the way up to 19 degrees. There are other features as well such as low power modes that give you an edge on fishing heavy cover. Once you figure one out you'll be a lot better on the ice. I know that I am.. I fished one the first time with my uncle when I was a kid and I didn't really understand it so I didn't give them much thought until the last couple of years when I used one with a family friend... Now I wish I'd had one that whole time and I'm kicking myself. I opted for the FL-18 after seeing that model in action a few months back.(I really liked the zoom feature)
Good Luck and good fishin'

Dave, I was just watching your video from Moundwood and heard you remark about wanting to have a hub shelter present at demo day. I have a Clam Expedition and I'll be willing to demonstrate its utility if you'd like.. I plan on being there if the weather is right anyway! I'll also be willing to help out with odds and ends if you need me...
P.S. Balls of solid rock out there at Long Is. I went in at Hoover a few years ago on ice a lot like that. You can't tell how it's going to be from one spot to the next. I had been fishing 2" of black with about the same amount of white on the surface, I walked about 15 feet up the bank and wound up in the middle of a break about as big as a hulahoop. I got lucky and laid out when I fell, but I ruined a cell phone and nice day.

You're either a heck of a salesman or your buddy has a serious pair of stones! His first time out was on poor ice and he still caught fish! I didn't get your message until about 4 and we were on our way to a family get together. Great that you got out! I think the snow and standing water on the ice is a big deterrant for people, it was for me.
Don't worry I'm sure we'll get together at some point this winter

Banker, if you come to Indian Lake this winter and I'm available we'll set up together and if you want you can use my fl-18... the good holes usually get pretty concentrated

Be careful around long island, there has appearently been a duck hunter trying to keep the north channel open.... I drilled two 3" holes earlier at another area of the lake

I stopped by Long Is. on Tuesday on the way home from Lima. There was skim ice all back in there and out toward Pony Is.
Then Yesterday morning I got on indianlake.com and they had even more starting to form on the main lake. Too bad about the temp hike we have coming next mid-week.
I'm still hoping for decent ice around new year's. Let's just hope it stays on this year.
Good Fishin'
