Inventions / Shanty & sled towing made easier
« on: February 09, 2014, 02:17:32 PM »
Got tired of dragging my Clam Nanook by just grabbing rope & pulling. Instead of buying a harness for your shoulders, I took an old treestand safety harness and cut the leg straps off and took a carabiner and attached to the lower drag loop on harness. Now I can put on harness, cinch down chest strap and hook carabiner to the tow rope and pull shanty with chest, leaving my hands free to spud and makes it easier to lean into it especially in deep snow & slush.

Also added a set of long X country ski's to runners on tub to help it ride higher and easier in deep snow :P

Inventions / Sandwich heater for Buddy/Big Buddy heater
« on: February 07, 2014, 07:18:43 PM »
I took a metal paint roller screen used in 5 gallon buckets and attached the lip hangers to the handle uprights with self tapping screws, came out about 6 inches to form a shelf and then bent it down to contact the safety grill and used wire to attach bottom to grill. Works great!!  Allows me to set a metal coffee cup on it to keep it warm and can take a foil wrapped sandwich and toss it on there to warm it. Nothing like a warm cup of coffee and and warm sandwich when the fish aren't biting. Been using this set up for 2 years now. Also mounted two L brackets on my Clam tub and put two small bolts with jamb nuts that line up with wall mount holes on back of heater: keeps heater from bouncing around. :D  Pics coming soon!!!

Nettle lake / 2/1/14
« on: February 02, 2014, 12:43:46 PM »
Fished Nettle lake today thru snow, sleet and rain from 10 am to 6 pm. 9 to 10 inches of ice with 6 inches of snow on top when I started. 5 shanties out when I arrived. Set up on a steep dropoff from 12 to 25 fow in 17 fow. Water stained.  In morning crappie were hitting a yellow/green cracked ice swedish pimple tipped with minnow head. Hit on drop after a deliberate 18 inch lift and fall. They did not want live minnow on a deadstick. Set up 2nd rod with Grandpa Bob's new pink glow teardrop tipped with waxies. Channel cats liked this combo at 2 ft off bottom. Crappie suspended from 2 to 15 fow. Bite really slowed as rain arrived. Changed to Grandpa Bob's micro pink horizontal jig tipped with waxies and coaxed a couple more crappie, some dink gills and a decent perch. Fished til dark expecting crappie bite to pickup but no such luck, was still raining. Snow was a slushy mess when I came off after dark. No effect on the ice as temps dropped into 20's overnight. Still a good day on the ice.... managed  11 crappie over 10", 1 perch, and 3 cats to take home to the freezer. Lost 3 cats, 1/2 dozen crappie at the hole and no gills worth keeping.

Check your own ice and No ice is Safe ice!!!!!

Be safe and enjoy :)

General Discussion / Ice fishing game
« on: January 25, 2014, 05:44:50 PM »
I don't know if it's been mentioned on this site before,  but a couple of years ago I found the most realistic ice fishing game from Pishtech LLC called Ice Fishing Derby. You can get for computers, tablets or smartphones. I have it on my laptop & tablet. It's a great way to pass time when you can't get out on the ice, like today in NW Ohio; we're in Level 2 Snow Emergency with 25 mph winds gusting to 35 mph with 5 to 7" of additional blowing and drifting snow.

:)When I can't get out to icefish,  I can still icefish in the comfort of my  home......

Just thought someone might be interested and enjoy it. May be a way to interest kids also..

P.S. I receive nothing from this game or the developers! !!!!!!

Nettle lake / 1/11/14
« on: January 11, 2014, 02:11:31 PM »
Fished today with Knucklehead. Weather was warm, windy, and foggy. We fished East of public access. Started out in 15 fow and went to about 18 and worked our way back to 8. Marked plenty of fish but they had lockjaw with this front moving thru. Most fish tight to bottom in all depths. Would come up and look at bait and disappear.  Knucklehead scratched out one small bass and I managed 1 dink gill. We didn't get skunked. Water was stained and saw  no one else on the ice. Used teardrops, jigs, spoons and blades tipped with waxies. Very few fish suspended. Tough walking as ice was covered with 4" of water and slush. Good 5" of ice under slush. Spudded our way and back. Should have enough slush for ice to hold til it get cold this week.
No ice is safe and you must check your own ice. With slush and snow cover and warm weather no one should venture out alone....

Small Pond Reports / NW Ohio ice

;D Just went out and  checked ice on my pond; New Years Day had 4" before that snow plus this last 13" which blew off during the artic blast. Today I have 8 - 10", 6" of clear with 2 - 4" cloudy on top depending on the areas I checked. Ice was really popping as it was making more. Calling for high 30's this weekend, which shouldn't phase it. Will be checking Nettle Lake this weekend as I heard rumors of 5" on outlet at North end off Wilson Dr. :D

:'(  Ok... enough is a Enough!!! Calling for 12" + of snow today and tonite in NW Ohio before we get lows of -18 and highs of -4 degrees over the next few days. Don't need the snow but bring on the cold. I was destined to be an Eskimo. ;D

General Discussion / Helpful tools
« on: January 04, 2014, 09:36:50 PM »
Just a couple of tools that I find that I can't do without:  I'm sure everyone has cut to far when filleting fish, especially panfish, at the tail and then trying to get a grip on the filet to remove the skin. I have and the best tool I've found is called the FILET CLAW. It allows  you to grip the filet so you can finish skinning. I bought mine at an outdoor show a couple of years ago and won't clean panfish without it. It is now carried by Bass Pro.

2nd is my knot tying tool. This is awesome for threading and tying small ice jigs out on the water with cold hands and old fart eyes like mine. Available at.. www.knottying.com...

Thought these may help young and old, new and experienced.

NOTE: I receive nothing from these products, I just use them and really depend on them. Maybe others will too.

Used my go to for this area; yellow green medium teardrop with double flutter blades tipped with waxies. Most fish about a foot off bottom.
