Out Of State Ice Fishing Trips / Re: Good Ice Within a Days Drive?????
« on: February 01, 2013, 01:35:39 PM »
If anyone gets fresh reports from Saginaw bay please post. We are thinking about driving up and taking the airboat out this Sunday. Never been there before. I have been checking everyplace for reports. Hopefully the ice is good. If not we are heading to Houghton lake.

Just drove around and checked the ice. Still locked up with a little open water south of the island on 43. CLR still locked up with a few feet of shoreline melt. Took a couple whacks to get through it but off the dock at CLR there was still 1.5 inches of clear ice. Think if we get some cold weather this will be the first place to get on at. Did not check palm rd.

Did notice over by the boathouse that there was a shad kill.

Just did a drive around to see what was left. The good news is that the lake is still 95% covered with clear ice. A few spots were open but close to shore and in areas that really are not fished. The shore line is gone from 2 foot to 10 foot out. As far as I could reach with the spud it would go through with one hit. We may be in luck with some cold weather. Mogadore was better but will post in that section.

Just got off the ice and sitting at congress lake road. Fished from 9-1 and caught 2 crappie 2 gills and 2 keeper perch with 3 throw back perch. Tough bite lots of lookers chartreuse pinman really small (almost a bare hook) and wax worm hooked through the middle worked. Spring hardly moved on the schoolie when they would bite. Ice still in good shape all the snow has melted and is an ez pull. Lots of water laying on the ice now. Only 3 other guys out. I was directly off the middle of the hanger in 6-7 feet of water.

I have the kind that strap in the middle of your boot with one rubber strap that hooks back on the cleat 4 prongs on the cleat they never come off. And I got 6 pairs for a buck a price after ice season. I forget I am wearing them and go into the store after fishing lol

My dad put sheet metal screws in the bottom of his boots. Works well too.  Same ones we put in the quad tires 1/4 in long maybe less.

What's the ice like out there normally? Currents? Spots to watch out for?
