General Discussion / Re: full moon and hard water
« on: February 14, 2014, 04:53:52 PM »
Go get em at night. I have had mixed results all over the board around the full moon phase. Everyday is a new adventure no matter what's going on, thats about all I really have. The solar tables had yesterday being the best day, longest activity, highest value. The bite was slow all day for me. I remember hammering fish on the least valued days as well. I do like fishing nights though for crappie during this time. A full moon in clear skies at night pulling crappies outside the shanty is where it's at.

Well here is my two day report. Do they have a thumbs down icon on this site!!! Went out of Catawba the last two days. Wednesday went 2.5 miles West -NW. Kinda buy myself in the area. Dropped lure down at 7:30. The first hour I had two good marks that just appeared on top of my bait, they never bit. I went two more hours with 3 more cruisers coming in. I moved NE .5 miles and only had 2 lookers, left there at 2ish. Set up my last time about 1.0 mile west of CSP. Again, no takers, 2 marks, left at 5:30.

Today went out with 2 others, we walked 2.20 miles North, NW. Dropped first lures at 7:45. Had 5 lookers in the first 4 hrs, no bites. Moved East about 1.0 and fished till 5:00, only saw 2 more lookers.

Man, I have been out 3 times and haven't iced an eye yet. I'm not timing the bite very well, and haven't been able to get em to go. I made some changes after the first day after seeing the clarity. Went done to 6# flouro. And down sized to 4 and 5 pimples. Mixed things up pretty good in the time I've spent. One or two things is going on in my opinion. 1) Catawba doesn't have the numbers, when they are inactive they are just plain shut down, and not many fish to work their negative mood. When the bite is hot, the fish that are there put the feed bag on, and if your in the right spot than you're going to score. 2) the fish are there in good numbers, but when they're in a negative mood they just either lay tight to the bottom and just sit. Or they are suspended and again not roaming to far. Just my observations, still learning Erie, and I have a lot to learn. It's been fun getting out and getting a chance to hook in to a couple. But now I'm a bit frustrated overall. Mainly because works calling, or I might feel a cold coming on, not sure yet ;) watching the weather.

They bite tomorrow since I'm probably not fishing, go get em.

All replies and voting much appreciated.. It a landslide, I'm still looking around for ride option and have placed one phone call. I'm saving Crane for a solo trip or when I can drag a buddy out. Walking out Thursday morning if the ride option fails. Heading Northwest until the old guys say Uncle.

Thanks Again..

Fishing solo tomorrow, thinking Crane since I've never been there. I'm heading out Thursday with the old man and his buddy. Not sure how far they're willing to walk, but conditions will end that debate quick once we get there.

Instead of starting another thread maybe I can get an answer to this question too. Since the ice has been good, does anyone have a number of anyone running people out? Be nice to pay for a lift out and we can walk it back.

Thanks

Same issue, and was wondering myself. I bought about 15 dozen, the crappie bite has been non existent around my parts. I still have almost 15 dozen left after they gave me about 30. Lol. I've had mine about a month.

Nice job on locating your fish. And thanks for the good report. How was the conditions for the walkers? Lots of snow? Man, it's tough seeing these results pour in and being limited to walking. Next year I'm finding a used machine. We probably won't have ice for a few years now but I'll be ready once we get it again. Once again, nice work!!

Well, how did you do? Haven't seen much on the chip. It was slow last year for me. Haven't been back.

The bite today off Catawba was terrible. I got out a couple miles NW. I moved a bunch and only had a few marks all day and zero bites. I think I made a mistake in leaving my first hole, I had two decent marks come and sniff, I left a short time after to search. I should of probably camp there all day, I'm beat. I talked to only a few and heard the bite was slow as well. I drilled a lot today, can't believe the lack of marks. Fished 22-23' the slush has hardened up, some areas may be a bit soft for quads and sleds, but most guys had no trouble moving about. I noticed the current was almost dead still as well today. I'm somewhat new on Erie but I covered ice ;D mixed up lures, colors and sizes, threw every jigging technique I have at em and nothing. Well, I'll try again once my legs return to normal.

Thank you sdkohio. I'm walking out in the morning, I was waiting for a report, as soon as I saw the driveway this morning I knew it was going to be tough. If we didn't get that snow we would be dragging in style, but nope. Might be able to stay on top in the morning if these temps drop soon. Anyone walking in the morning?

A few years back I came back to my minivan and somebody had siphoned most of the gas out of the tank. Just made it to gas station.  Crime on the ice and every place is common now days. I don't trust anybody when I am out. I'll be civil enough but I keep an eye on anybody that comes close.  All the school and mall shootings Hope some nut does not decide to start hunting Ice Fishermen.  I am more afraid of somebody popping me off from 500yrds than going thru the ice. AND THAT IS NO JOKE

That's why I rope a dope and stick n move to and from my spots ;D ;D ;D

Damn. Sorry about the loss. I'll take it that you took your shanty and other items on the ice, leaving only your minnow bucket behind to go set everything up, then return for your bucket?
Then as you turned back you saw them (the guy in the van) drive away and your bucket was gone? That is crazy timing or they were scoping out from some close area. If all the past few days stories are correct, then this is going to continue and end up getting ugly.

It's small value items at this point, for this to happen as often as it has, guys really need to be on their toes. Lots of questions right now. An honest bait and watch just to get plates might be in order, you need to watch the watchers, then report them, even 911(People call over under cooked fillet O fish) then hopefully they catch them on the road with the stolen items. IDK, but somebody needs an a$$ whippin.

14" of ice. Some snow on top. Small area just northeast of ramp a little wet under the snow. Whole lake is locked. The bite has been extremely slow. There have been a few guys out, with same results. Lots of tiny perch again.

We sit on ice for hours, most probably sit n deer stands for hours too. I have always wanted to sit and wait over a baited car or truck. Come on, this will be fun. Now we know of the idiots hot spot. This is more than once in a few days. We will grab and trap this animal and youtube it under the heading " Not My Ice Gear " and show the rest of the idiots what to expect if you mess with guys on a slow bite. Anyone want to go hunting sometime soon? ;D
