General Discussion / Custom ice rods
« on: September 30, 2016, 06:48:54 PM »
I know it's still pretty early, but I'm thinking about building ice fishing rods again this year.  I'd like to see how much interest there is before I start getting supplies, though.  Let me know if you're interested.  They make pretty good Christmas gifts too.
Here are some pics of two of the ice rods I built last year.
The first (purple thread) is a 28.5" composite microlight panfish rod.  It features an EVA foam Tennessee style grip with graphite reel locks, lightweight stainless steel guides, and Hi-vis orange tip.  This rod is also available in other lengths and actions.  Prices start at $50.
The second (neon green) is a 26.5" fiberglass "power noodle" panfish rod.  It features a 4" super grade cork handle, extremely light and durable titanium Recoil guides with hi-vis green tip.  These rods can be custom tailored to your specs.  Many rod sizes, actions, blank materials, guide types, and handle styles are available.  Prices start around $120.  Reels not included.

General Discussion / Custom ice rods

This year I decided to do something a little different.  I wanted to make some of the gifts a gave this year.  So I made some ice rods for my girlfriend and a few other ice fishermen I know.  I obviously had to build one for myself as well, lol.  The rods are turning out better than I ever thought they would.  Hers is a 28" composite panfish rod, that I think would also work very well as a deadstick rod for perch.  The one I made for myself is a 26" panfish rod, that I built on a solid fiberglass power noodle blank.  I used titanium recoil guides and paired it with a black Betty 6061 reel.  I don't know if anyone would be interested, but I am taking orders as well.  They are built to order, and prices according to your specs.  These a very high quality rods.  I'm trying to upload pics, but have had trouble with it all day.  I'll post them as soon as I figure out what I'm doing wrong.  Lol.

General Discussion / Lowrance on ice
« on: November 04, 2015, 03:02:37 PM »
I've had a lowrance elite 4x hdi for a couple years now.  Last year was my first year using it on ice, and I had some issues with it.  The main issue I found was that most of the time, I couldn't see my lure on the graph.  I'm sure I need to make some adjustments to the settings, but I have no idea what to adjust.  Does anyone have experience with these units?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

General Discussion / Auger comparison
« on: October 24, 2015, 10:26:49 PM »
I'm planning on buying a power auger in the next few weeks.  I've been looking at the jiffy and Eskimo propane augers.  Do either have an advantage over the other?

General Discussion / Carrying case for Lowrance elite 4x hdi
« on: November 15, 2014, 09:50:11 AM »
So in the spring I picked up a 4x HDI for my kayak, and want to use it for ice fishing as well.  I want to find a case to use while on the ice.  I know lowrance makes one, but it comes with a transducer that won't work with my unit.  It's also a bit on the expensive side.  Anyone have ideas?

General Discussion / I NEED TO GET OUT!!!!
« on: January 09, 2014, 11:32:27 PM »
It's been nearly a month since I've been able to get out and I really need to hit the ice again.  Hopefully I'll get some free time pretty soon and be able to get out again.
Okay, my venting is done now.

Has anyone used the arctic warrior tip up from clam?  My wife got me one for Christmas and I'm curious if anyone had opinions on it.

General Discussion / Easy homemade camera panning device
« on: December 19, 2013, 08:23:01 PM »
I made this little device out of plexi that I had laying around at work.  Works great for panning your underwater camera, without spending $50 on a remote panner.  If you're on a budget, cheap, or just like making things yourself like me, it's a great little tool.  Didn't cost me a thing either, except about a half hour of my time.

2020/2021 On-line Tournament! / Pumpkinseed from 12/15
« on: December 18, 2013, 08:43:36 AM »
I got this pumpkinseed fishing bolles harbor in Monroe Michigan on Sunday.  He was just under 8".  I was out of ink, so the jaw jacker logo is a little hard to see, but it's there.

General Discussion / Spikes
« on: December 10, 2013, 07:23:44 PM »
I just bought a thousand spikes this morning.  I found a local shop that buys them from Knutson's in Michigan.  They gave me a good deal on the bulk amount.  They are some fat spikes this year.  Hope I get to use some up on Sunday!

General Discussion / Battery question
« on: November 25, 2013, 09:12:47 AM »
I have two SLA batteries for my "lil green box" flasher and camera.  They both still have a good charge from last year.  Is it okay to put them on the charger and top them off, or should I run them both dead first?  I'm just not sure if these types of batteries have the same memory issues that a lot of rechargable batteries do.

General Discussion / Jigging rods
« on: November 20, 2013, 09:12:43 AM »
I have a number of ice rods to use on the ice, but I feel I may be missing something in the lineup.  What type of rods do you guys use with light jigging spoons and small jigging raps, for crappies, perch and BIG gills?

General Discussion / What is your go to bait?
« on: November 11, 2013, 06:30:47 PM »
Just kinda curious as to what everyone's favorite baits are, and maybe what baits you plan to try a bit more this year?
I used to just go with some type of horizontal jig made of lead, then I discovered tungsten.  Now a Fiskas wolfram jig or CJ&S chekai jig, tipped with a spike are what get used the most.  After having some success with plastics last year, I want to try them a bit more this year.  I also have a number of spoons that have had almost no use, and a few rattle baits just in case I'm fishing someplace with toothy critters.

General Discussion / Keeping spikes?
« on: November 03, 2013, 01:31:21 PM »
I've been thinking about buying my spikes or maggots, whatever you want to call them, in bulk this year to save a few bucks.  500 spikes in the $10-15 range just sounds way better than 20 of them for around $3.50 from the bait shop.  So my question is, how to keep them alive?  I know to keep them in the fridge and to add some bedding for them.  But, do I need to feed them at all?
