just got a spud bar, do u let the wait of the bar do the work or do you force it into the ice, and how many times should you hit the same spot to know you have safe ice. i've always fished where the pack was but would like to break away and find unpresured fish.

Good Question. I learned to let the weight drive the spud into the ice and that one drive typically  = 1" so if you hit the same spot 2 or 3 times and water starts coming up then the ice is not safe.

point it in front of you at an angle. punch straight down and if you find a thin spot, your spud bar will be structure for fish.
