All,
Attached are a couple of pics taken from my back deck at 7:45 this morning. Icing happened over night as we had soft water up until going to bed. It's getting close!
I'll update with progress this week (since I now live 50' from the lake). If the weather stays like this I may be able to drill a hole later in the week.

Shouldn't be a problem....

That's the way to start the morning right there. Bring on the ice.

Keep us up to date on the thickness Andy. Got a report tonight from a buddy there's a little over an inch at the 1st pull off on long island. Got a ways to go but at least it's freezing.
And we were talking the other day that you should just host an ifo boarding house. Lol. Save me some driving.

I drove around the lake yesterday and the main lake area is wide open. Channels are frozen hovwever there were signs of snow melt in the center of some of them. The North end of the Lake has the most ice. Overnight, we had a light snow which has covered what ice there is. According to the forecast it’s going to warm up into the 30’s/40’s from Saturday onwards so I don’t see safe ice being a reality this weekend The longer range forecast is calling for an arctic blast late next week so we may get safe ice before Christmas.
I’ll post updates regularly on the condition of the lake....

Thanks for the update Andy

FYI...got a report there are guys fishing long Island this evening 2.5 to 3" of ice...crazy I know. I'm planning on going thursday early am. I have a local hookup that's going to show me some new spots hopefully!

I've never had a problem on 2". It's sketchy but I've never felt unsafe on that much ice and I've fished on less which was dumb lol. 3" is plenty unless you're like 800 pounds. Be safe everyone.

Especially if it’s clear, Black Ice. I’ve been through on 3” of milky ice, but good clear Ice is great all day Long. PS, I’m only 190 pounds.

All,
Drove around the lake again today - here's some updates; The main lake is locked as far as the eye can see. Channels at the south side are now locked. There were guys fishing at the 1st pull off on Long Island but not very far out - they were at the end of the pocket we usually use to get across to the island. At the 2nd pull off I was surprised to see open water on both sides of the peninsula. On the side between Long Island and O'Connors it looked like the aerators have kept the water soft along the Northern side (left as you look towards O'Connors from the bridge). There is a decent area of ice on the right side. I saw a report that there's 2-1/2" of ice at Long Island but it only goes out 100yds which makes sense from what I saw today. My take is that the ice is still not safe, for me anyway, and most of the areas I know to fish are still inaccessible.

STOP PRESS! In the last hour we went from 22F and driving sleet/snow to 34F and rain. Our man on the scene (ok, my wife) is reporting that it’s decidedly warmer! Stay tuned for more updates from radio IFO2017 “We got the ice”.....
Update: Wnet back down to 20F overnight....phew!

I thought I had the only wife who thinks she is a weather forecaster! Haha guess not, thanks for the updates.

There was a lot of ice melt yesterday as temps got into the low 40s. Water pooling was very visible on the ice. From now until Christmas temps will be in the 40s during the day and 30s/20s over night. I expect the ice will stay but it wil melt some. After Christmas they are forecasting 20s/Teens. So, if all stays as forecasted it will be New Year before we get on the ice at Indian Lake.....

All,
I drove around the lake last night - here's what I saw; there is still a lot of ice on the lake. There's lots of edge melt and pockets/channels are opening up. I've attached a pic from Sassafras looking out towards Tilton Hilton taken this morning (The open water is due to aerators). With the warm temps yesterday and continuing until Friday we'll see more melt however; I don't think the ice will totally disappear (keeping the Lake cold). From Sunday onward they are forecasting much colder temps for the next 9 days. Based upon current conditions and the weather forecast I expect we'll have safe, good quality/consistent ice by New Years eve.

I would like to see all the ice melt and start over from scratch so we would have stronger clear ice. The way the last few years have gone, I will take whatever kind of walkable ice is given us.

Thanks for the update.

Anyone have any updates on the ice? I was in the area on Christmas Eve and saw Long Island had mostly open water but there was still some ice on the north side. I stopped by Lakeside to pick up a couple of things and they were thinking tomorrow may be safe ice. Unfortunately with work and family I won't get there until Friday maybe Saturday.

I like lakeside but they are usually a little overly optimistic about ice conditions. Buddy of mine checked it yesterday and a lot of the lake was open and even long island only had an inch of crap ice at the first pull off. Id wait a few days and keep an eye on this site. Someone will be posting updated reports

Thanks. I thought they were a little overzealous on the prediction too but figured I couldn't get out there until the weekend anyways. Looking forward to a good year after only being able to get out the one time before Christmas last year. My gear is all laid out in the basement ready to go.
