General Discussion / Season Ending Thoughts
« on: February 20, 2011, 10:41:13 AM »
With the end of our Ohio Ice Fishing Season in view, it's time for some reflection.  It's been a great season meeting fellow icers in search of that elusive  under-ice prey.  the posts by fellow icers have kept my adrenilin up and gave me a boost to venture out into the cold when I shunned to do so.

The introduction of new gear including a new ice shanty (Clam Nanook), an ice suit (IDI Ice Amour) and new tackle made my icing experiences that much more enjoyable.

It felt great to meet other cold water fishing sportsman.. both young, old, male and female.  Nice to know the winter sport continues in Ohio despite our erratic and short season in comparison to those in Minnesota or Wisconsin

Eventho my catches this year have been mostly disappointing, my opportunities to hit the ice were greater than years past.

There may be a few more weeks of decent ice, but I know in my heart the season is nearing it finale; when I start thinking of safety issues and ice conditions, it's time to lessen the hopes & anticipation of getting out too many more times.

My thoughts are gradually moving towards gardening & backpacking.  Already I've visited Donzell's and purchased some seed & a bag of "Starter-Mix".  (I'll start my peppers, tomato's, and some flowers in the basement in a month or so).  Soon it'll be time to hook up the rain-barrels and start yard clean-up chores.

I've already planned a 3 day backpack trek in the 2nd week of April.  Havent decided on the specific trail, but most assured, it'll be somewhere in Western or Central part Pennsylvania.

Since I'm strictly a "Hard-water fisherman", all my tackle will be put in storage in anticipation of next years ventures.

With only a time or two left, it's been an absolute wonderful season., but I still hope to make a nice catch with the last remaining holes I drill.

I'm sincerely indebted to all I met.  it's been a blast

Thanks to all

Mogadore Reservoir / Mogadore Oh Mogadore, Where for art thou?
« on: February 14, 2011, 01:44:55 PM »
Que Pasa to this once premier panfish lake of Northeastern Ohio???   The overall catch has been sparse and extremely sporadic from the reports I've gotten this ice fishing season.

Read a post last week stating an ice fisherman with a camera viewed a bunch of dead fish on the bottom off Congress Lake Road.

I tried to get out on Wingfoot with Jon Sr (MrPhish42) this morning (for my very first time), but the high winds of 50+ mph as we met at the parking lot thwarted us from doing

We decided to hit Mogadore near the boathouse at St Rt 43 where it's "wind-protected" from the Westerly & Northern Winds).  The rains & hail didnt stop us, but we were very happy to be wearing ice cleats., (Dont think anyone could walk on the ice without them).

We punched nearly 20 holes and never had a bite; nor did we see any fish on our Vex's.

We hit the deep & shallow waters from 12ft to 4ft, but NADA.

Moggie has me stumped as to what has happened to that once fine fishery.

Mogadore Reservoir / Field Report Thursday Morning Feb 10, 2011
« on: February 11, 2011, 02:51:03 PM »
Drove all around Mogadore Thursday morning, 2/10 was shocked by what I saw. NOT ONE ICE FISHERMAN ON THE ENTIRE LAKE!

Man was that a shocker in comparison to yesteryear. Granted the cold weather contributed to it, but I just shook my head and wondered what happened to this once Ohio Premier Winter Fishery.
MrPhish said another factor contributing to it was all the Moggie guys were most likely hitting Wingfoot this season also. Guess he was right too.

The only pair of eyes I saw was a lone Coyote while I was parked at Palm Rd/Saxe Rd. Observed him from 600 yds away towards the west. When he spotted me, he squatted on the ice for few minutes eyeballing me.

It truly is sad how Mogadore has changed.

Aquilla Lake / Field Report Week of Feb 6-12
« on: February 11, 2011, 02:46:59 PM »
Cold temps slowed down the ice fisherman to almost zero this week.. atleast during my morning drive-by observations.

Although the lake hasnt produced record catches in numbers or sizes, it has been a steady producer of putting fish in the bucket this season... gills, red-ears & crappies.

Overall, the ice fishing pressure has been non-existent.  I dont think I've seen more than 3 shanty's on the ice at any one time.

LaDue Resevoir / Feb 1 -10 Field Report

Ice fishing activity has been light the last week or so.  The frigid temps haven't aided the hardwater enthusiasts either. Valley Rd continues have the lightest fishing pressure while the boathouse & Rt 44 Boatlaunch are getting greater numbers.

Catches continue to be sporadic with small white perch, yellow perch, crappie.  Gills are the mainstay species being caught with an occasional walleye in the bucket also.  More gills are being caught across the St Rt 44 Boatlaunch & Parking area.

Inventions / Shanty Extra Rod Storage
« on: February 06, 2011, 05:03:50 PM »
Interested in ideas on what guys have devised and/or constructed in order to store their extra ice rods inside their shanty's.  Here's a prototype that I made that stores 3 rods inside my Clam Nanook.  It's a fixed unit, light weight and simple to construct.  It's made out of a small block of closed cell foam with 3-1" holes drilled into it.

Portage Lakes / Sunday Jan 30
« on: January 30, 2011, 07:52:13 PM »
Both Ed & I met at the Portage Lakes Parking lot at 6:30 am.  Still dark, we lit up the lanterns and headed onto the ice.  The bite was steady till about 8:00 am then slowed considerably.  Again, we were catching dinks and no slab gills, crappie or perch.

I decided to venture towards deeper waters and by accident caught this nice 27" channel cat.. 3 lb test, pin min & wax worm.  I hollered for Ed and he came over to lend a hand.  I asked him to get his gaff...and he eloquently stated he didnt bring his.... I requested he retrieve mine which was about 200yd away.  He got it and I slowly brought the fish into view not knowing what species...whether it was a walleye, carp, saugeye, etc...

Ed was barely able to get it thru the 5" hole I drilled.  Biggest fish I've landed thru the ice.
My son, Nathan, joined us about the time I brought the cat onto the ice.

As for the panfish.. another disappointing day.. Ed cleaned 16 while I caught 36 and cleaned 8.
As much as Nathan & I searched for the larger fish in deeper waters, we had no luck.

LaDue Resevoir / Friday 1/28
« on: January 28, 2011, 02:48:19 PM »
Light activity on Ladue for Friday 1/28.  1 shanty at the boathouse, 1 shanty off Valley Rd & 2 shanty's off St Rt 44 Boathlaunch (fishing East).

Spoke with the 2 guys coming off Valley Rd.  Slow bite. Only caught a handful of gills, but they were very nice size gills.

Portage Lakes / Turkeyfoot Weds 1/26 and Thursday 1/27:
« on: January 28, 2011, 05:33:18 AM »
Turkeyfoot Weds 1/26 and Thursday 1/27:

Fished for 2 hrs both days: 4:30PM to 6:30PM
Weds: Solo Fished, caught 16 and cleaned 6... nothing to brag about
Thurs: Fished with Ed, caught 35+ fish, all dinks... we didnt take home a keeper

The panfish were biting extremely lite... lots of lookers & snifers.

Thinking the "Mid-Season Bite" is upon us and the larger fish moved to deeper waters.  Will most likely start drilling holes in deeper sections of Turkeyfoot in hopes of finding supsended Gills, Crappie & Perch.

LOTS OF SLUSH ON THE ICE MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO WALK.

Portage Lakes / Portage Lakes Sunday 1/23
« on: January 24, 2011, 06:02:33 AM »
Checked the ice conditions at Portage Lakes Saturday afternoon, 1/22 before deciding to venture out early Sunday morning, 1/23. (This past weeks reports of lowered water levels had me spooked).

Ice looked good... normal.  We were on the ice by 7:30 with my son, Nate and fellow gray-beard icer, Ed.  Nate & I had a tough day and decided to try to find suspended perch or crappie in the large section of Turkeyfoot Lake. After a dozen holes, no luck and we returned to our original spots.  Ed had a hot hole all day long.  He fished till noon taking home 52 gills while Nathan & I caught 42 and took home only 11. Ed caught a few nice 9" hog bluegill while both Nathan & me were hitting "munchin land" gills. Nthan did catch 4 nice crappie, but Ed blitzed us today.

It was cold, but fun.  Got home in time to clean up, watch the football games and fillet our fish.

LaDue Resevoir / Field Report Week of Jan 16-22, 2011
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:43:50 PM »
Ice fishing activity continues to slightly increase.  Saturday, 1/22, there were nearly a dozen fishing... most out from the boatlaunch, but one shanty off Valley Rd and a couple of guys East of St Rt 44.  (Didnt see anyone fishing the West side of the St Rt 44 Boatlaunch nor the south side of St Rt 422 Bridge).

Catches continue to be sporadic with small yellow perch, white perch, crappie  along with decent gills.  No recent catch reports of walleye this week.
