Small Pond Reports / NW Ohio ice
« on: January 07, 2014, 11:49:31 AM »
;D Just went out and  checked ice on my pond; New Years Day had 4" before that snow plus this last 13" which blew off during the artic blast. Today I have 8 - 10", 6" of clear with 2 - 4" cloudy on top depending on the areas I checked. Ice was really popping as it was making more. Calling for high 30's this weekend, which shouldn't phase it. Will be checking Nettle Lake this weekend as I heard rumors of 5" on outlet at North end off Wilson Dr. :D

;D Well snow is over for NW Ohio after 13". Now the artic blast arrives. Good thing about this artic blast and the winds is: it blew all the snow off my pond so it will really make ice over the next couple of days. Hopefully does the same for Nettle Lake, doubt it will for McKarns and Barton as they are well protected by trees. 10 counties under level 3 snow emergency in NW Ohio. Winds gusting 35 to 40 mph, blowing and drifting. -1degree w/o windchill. ATV will snow blade on it doesn't want to run well with 3' drifts in driveway. ???

:'(  Ok... enough is a Enough!!! Calling for 12" + of snow today and tonite in NW Ohio before we get lows of -18 and highs of -4 degrees over the next few days. Don't need the snow but bring on the cold. I was destined to be an Eskimo. ;D

General Discussion / Helpful tools
« on: January 04, 2014, 09:36:50 PM »
Just a couple of tools that I find that I can't do without:  I'm sure everyone has cut to far when filleting fish, especially panfish, at the tail and then trying to get a grip on the filet to remove the skin. I have and the best tool I've found is called the FILET CLAW. It allows  you to grip the filet so you can finish skinning. I bought mine at an outdoor show a couple of years ago and won't clean panfish without it. It is now carried by Bass Pro.

2nd is my knot tying tool. This is awesome for threading and tying small ice jigs out on the water with cold hands and old fart eyes like mine. Available at.. www.knottying.com...

Thought these may help young and old, new and experienced.

NOTE: I receive nothing from these products, I just use them and really depend on them. Maybe others will too.

Small Pond Reports / Re: Barton & McKarns Lakes
« on: January 04, 2014, 07:50:46 PM »
1/4/14  McKarns still open. Barton locked up but snow covered. Consider it UNSAFE as there is creek that runs through it that is fed by the river. Did not go out on ice as I was by myself.

No Ice is Safe Ice!!!  Check your own ice as you go!

Nettle Lake snow covered. No one on lake this season yet. Didn't check ice as I was by myself and a lot of snow.

Ice is not safe!

Used my go to for this area; yellow green medium teardrop with double flutter blades tipped with waxies. Most fish about a foot off bottom.

General Discussion / Re: 2014 Start in NW Ohio.....Snow!!!!!!
« on: January 02, 2014, 04:42:28 PM »
Snow finally moving out of NW Ohio.. Blowing and drifting. Most counties level 1 or 2 snow emergency.  Negative temps tonight,  high of 20 Saturday, accumulating snow again on Sunday. Next week; highs in the the single digits and lows to -15 w/o windchill. I think we got about 10" of snow.  If we didn't have the snow, I'd be breaking out the gas augerftp://

That sounds painful! Can't imagine how you did it. Football bowl games start at 1. Check out YouTube videos on ice fishing from In Depth Outdoors and Iceteam. Just a few ideas.
It only hurts til you get out fishin...

Just finished plowing driveway, with this cold our snow is extremely light. Reminds me of the snow at -40 degrees when I lived in Alaska; would stack up to 6" on tiny tree branches. I don't think we'll have enough snow weight with this storm to force the water up, but I can hope. Will have to hit some smaller water on Saturday.

:-[   Looks like I need to move to Southern Ohio.... Had 3 to 5" of ice last weekend before warm up and then temperatures dropped; looking forward to good ice finally on bigger lakes with upcoming single digit highs and negative lows BUT.... now we're getting 8 to 9" of snow today and tonight. Won't make much ice with that much insulation. :'(
