Title: Wax and spikes
Post by: ICE COLD on January 29, 2014, 02:49:29 PM
What can I put in with my wax worms and spikes to keep them fattened up? I had a container of waxies for a week or two and they all weren't as plumb as they were.

That is a good question.

Not sure there is anything to put into them to plump them up.

When they get cold the shrink up. I set my bait container on my defrost on my dash on the way to the lake and then they warm up and get much plumper.

I have even heard of tournament fisherman putting them into there mouth to warm them up.

Give it a try and let me know how it works ;D

There is a product called Best Bet breeder food that is used when you try to grow your own. Do a search online for wax worm kits and you will find the food there or go on youtube and do a search lots of info on there.

Can't bring myself to mouth a worm, so I keep them warm in a hard plastic bait puck in my shirt pocket under my arctic armor suit.

I could be wrong but I don't think waxies eat in that stage, I haven't seen anything about feeding them.  Freezing is definetely bad, room temp storage is best.
Spikes will keep longer in the refrigerator and also adding a bit of orange or lemon peel, the citrus oil somehow prevents them from pupating (turning brown or black).

And I am not doing any fishermans version of the old Fear Factor, if its that bad I'll go with the plastics first.

Mist them with some distilled water

I'm bettin on A&C's advice, he may know a thing or two about bait ;D  I know he has trained his fatheads to live for almost a month in horrible conditions i my bait bucket.  Now if he would just wholesale them to his dealers trained to hook the fish that swim off with them no matter how long I let them take it first.

You don't want either to eat. Just remember, do not keep your waxies in the fridge, it's too cold for them. Keep them in a cool place, somewhere around 60 degrees. If you are buying the 250 count tubs, keep them stored with the lid off for ventilation. Maggots need to be refrigerated, preferably around 35 degrees. If you buy in bulk, transfer them to a ziplock bag and put a couple very small breather holes at the top of the bag. This will help them stay moist, plump and keep them from drying out and turning on you..........Mark

If this works for wives and girlfriends too, may need a bigger fridge :)
