General Discussion / Outlook for the week?
« on: December 19, 2016, 07:05:14 AM »
Hi All,

Do you think we'll get any decent ice build this week? Forecasts show a slight warm-up compared to last week with highs in the mid 30's and lows in the mid 20's. They are forecasting highs in the 40's next weekend.

This weekend was a let down for me as I didn't get out (Truck is in the repair shop). I'm hoping to get out this week or next weekend....

General Discussion / IFO Bumper Stickers
« on: December 17, 2016, 02:46:07 PM »
All,

David and I have worked on bumper stickers for the 2016/2017 ice fishing season. The design is attached below. The stickers have been ordered and will be here next week.

We plan on handing them out on the ice as we see folks.

Additionally, we'll hold some back to be handed out to members at the IFO Booth at the Columbus Fishing Expo (Feb 10th-12th) and at the N.E Pan Fish Series.

May your jigs get jiggy wid it.....

Small Pond Reports / 1-3/4" on local pond in Powell Ohio - 12/14/2016
« on: December 14, 2016, 06:11:46 PM »
Checked my local farm pond tonight and it had 1-3/4" on it with no snow. Powell is North of Buckeye and South of Indian with temps in between both areas all week. From this I'm making a guess the it will take A little while longer for Buckeye to get safe ice but Indian may be possible by the weekend - I'll be glued to ratherbefishings report later this week.

O'Shaunessy reservoir is iced over and the dam has frozen.....just as a FYI....

Pro's Pointers / Ice Plastics.....
« on: December 12, 2016, 08:36:56 PM »
To break up the apprehension on ice conditions I though I'd post this question:

Does anyone use plastics when ice fishing?
(I bought some Clam Maki Plastics today out of curiosity)
How successful have you been with them?
Have you had better success with plastics compared to spikes, waxes or minnow?

Just wondering....

Recipes / Fish Taco's.....yum!
« on: December 09, 2016, 09:20:37 PM »
I've tried this with walleye and perch - both very good...

Ingredients

1/4 Cup Olive Oil
1-1/2 Teaspoons Chilli Powder
1-1/2 Teaspoons Dried Oregano
1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cumin
1/4 Cup Freshly Chopped Cilantro Leaves
1lb Fish Filets
Salt

Tortillas, Salsa, Guacamole, Limes etc.

Pour the oil, spices and cilantro into a bowl and mix well. Pour the mix into a freezer bag and put in the fish. Coat the fish with marinade, seal and leave it in the fridge for at least 2hrs. I have left mine in overnight.

Put the fish in a non-stick pan over a medium high heat, cook for 4 mins undistirbed, turn and then cook for another 2 mins. Add salt to taste. Flake the fish are nice done.

Assemble the tacos and serve....yum!

Delaware Reservoir / Delaware 12/4/2016
« on: December 04, 2016, 05:02:28 PM »
Fished Delaware this morning with Josh, with Rick joining us later. The bite was very good early and fairly good from 9:00am onwards. We were releasing so didnt pay much attention to sizes but I would say 75% were > 9" and a few over 10"......great morning, no wind, overcast sky and temps in the mid-high 30's.  They have drained the lake to winter levels btw....

General Discussion / Mr Heater & 1lb Propane Tank Tests
« on: October 09, 2016, 07:04:27 AM »
Hi All,

I'm sure many have refilled 1lb propane tanks - it seems to be common practice. Yesterday we did some testing with them and a Mr Buddy heater. Here's the results:

Empty 1lb Tank - 13oz
Full 1lb Tank - 1lb 13oz
1lb Tank Cost - $12.00 - $15.00 for 4 ($3.00 - $3.75 each)
Mr Heater Consumption (lo setting) - 4oz/hr
Mr Heater Consumption (hi setting) - 6oz/hr
15lb propane refill - $15.00 - $18.00

So a 1lb tank will last 4hrs on the Mr Buddy low setting and 2.7hrs on the high setting. Depending on ambient temperature and shanty 3-4 tanks should last for around 12hrs.

Refilling the 1lb tanks is very economical. Each tank will cost $1.00 - $1.20 assuming the 15lb propane tank will fill 15 1lb tanks. This is probably not the case but refilling is a lot cheaper than buying new each time. Even savings of $1.00 per tank will give $4.00 per day overall savings - this adds up over a season.

To refill the 1lb tanks I used a Mr Buddy refill adapter ($17.99) and Mr Buddy filter ($9.99). We found that an initial charge put around 9oz in each 1lb tank. Putting the 1lb tank in the freezer after the initial charge for 2 hours allowed us to completely fill them. Using this method allowed us to get around 1lb 6oz of propane in the tanks. Ensuring the 1lb tank was at 45 degrees angle helped the filling process.

Obviously refilling the tanks can be hazardous and comes with a "Don't try this at home" warning. I thought the results of our experiment yesterday might be helpful.

General Discussion / Ice Fishing Gear at Cabela's Polaris
« on: October 09, 2016, 06:25:15 AM »
All,

Cabela's have a selection of ice fishing gear out at their Polaris store. It looks like last years stock but they have made space for a dedicated ice fishing section. They'll probably stock more gear over the next few weeks.

Shanty Help / Ice Shanty Mods - Wide 1 Inferno - Part 1
« on: October 02, 2016, 08:07:07 AM »
Hi All,

I decided I would trick out my Eskimo Wide 1 Inferno. Most of the ideas came from posts in this forum and researching YouTube (A big thanks to everyone who shares their ideas!). MY goal was to store my gear more effectively and get fishing quicker while maintaining the general look of the shanty. I have quite a few pics so I'll add in multiple posts.

Front Lights & Rod Holder

I installed a piece of 3/8" aluminum angle across the back of the sled to support rod holders for dead sticking. Above the aluminum angle are 3 Clam Led Sled lights. All were installed with stainless nuts, screws and washers which double as fasteners for the tray (later post).

This was a pretty simple install with fixing and wiring taking a couple of hours.

More to follow....

Alum Creek Dock Tournaments / Dock fished Alum this morning...
« on: September 17, 2016, 09:01:49 PM »
I fished at Alum this morning between 9:00am and 11:30am. Caught 4 short crappie 7-1/2" - 8-1/2". The bite went off at about 10:30am but still marked a lot of fish. All boats are out of the docks. The road going to the area we usually park for the dock tourneys is blocked off. There's an office trailer at the bottom end of the car park. It looks like they will be pulling the docks pretty soon but, still, a good mornings fishing...
