Just wondering;

What is the difference between: Newbie, Jr. member, Sr. member, Global Moderator, etc. in members profile.

What do the different colors of stars and number of them represent?

Been wondering this for awhile and with the increased interest and members on this site; others may be interested also.

General Discussion / Lake LaSuAn NW Ohio

I know info on lakes normally goes under that lake but this early in the season no one is posting lake info; that being said...This is possibly breaking news for this lake.

I spoke with the Fish and Wildlife guys today and there is a really good chance that they will open this lake for icefishing  this year. They are still waiting on final approval but due to not enough gills caught thru the summer they are looking for a solution by opening up ice fishing this year after no ice fishing for the past I can't remember how many years.

Expected opening will be Dec. 20th if we have good ice and continuing thru Feb. This is a fantastic gill lake and ice fishing used to be out of this world. I will be watching for a definite decision on their web site and will let everyone know. Anyone who has ice fished this lake in the past, I'm sure will jump at a chance to get back on this winter.

The Ice God's are Smiling again this year. ;D

What's everyone else hearing.

Bring on the COLD!

Soft Water Fishing Reports / Nettle Lake
« on: April 13, 2014, 08:02:27 AM »
Hit Nettle lake on Saturday, 4/12/14 and spent the day. Beautiful day to be on the water. Water temps were 50 degrees, slight chop and overcast most of the day. Got into the crappie in 7 fow among the tree limbs. Used minnows and found the crappie didn't want lip hooked minnows, went to hooking minnows just behind dorsal fin and they tore them up. Ran out of minnows (5 dozen). Fished 2 ft deep on North cove, Southwest corner. Slip bobber and #6 red tru-turn hook. Caught 2 cats and had a big one for 10 mins on 4lb test ultralight and lost it under the boat. Never got it to the surface. Caught 18 in. 2.5lb bass. Kept 29 crappie from 9 to 11-1/2"  ;D

Fishing was slow today with the front coming thru. They weren't calling for anything, got on the ice and it started to rain and then turned to snow. Snowed from 8:30 till I left at 1. Nice day to be on ice; 35 degrees to start and problably 40 when I left. Jacket open with hood up to keep snow and rain off but no gloves needed. Definitely needed gas auger as ice was 16 to 18 inches thick. I hadn't fished this lake for 10 years. Went back to spot I used to hit years ago and wouldn't you know; it's still a good spot. Water cloudy but that's normal for this lake. Punched about 35 holes from 14 to 8 fow amongst the downed trees. Bite was super light. Missed 1 on minnow with deadstick, hung me in a tree limb. Lost a total of 4 jigs in the trees today, darn fish (tungsten jigs aren't cheap) :(  Caught a dozen crappie, mostly 8 to 9 inches, 1 over 11, a few under 8, a few dink gills and a couple of small warmouth. No cats. Fish were 2 foot off bottom to 2 foot under ice. Jigs were: GrandpaBob's silver shad large teardrop, tungsten in orange and perch colors tipped with waxies. Fairly aggressive jigging followed by a pause seemed to be the trigger. With that much ice, should have at least two more weekends to fish. Met a gentleman on the ice today that hadn't ice fished for years and came down to give it a try. We had a nice chat and I asked him where he wanted to fish as he had an old hand auger and appeared to be in his 60's; he showed me and I told him to mark where he wanted his holes and I would cut them with my gas auger for him since ice was so thick. Then dropped my Vex in each of his holes to show him what depth was and if any activity below. He thanked me and enjoyed watching the Vex. Told him to check out IceFishOhio.com and may see him online. Nice day!!!!!! ::)

Got a report from buddy today. Marked a ton of fish in 12 fow in stumps. Lots of lookers but no takers today with this new 3 to 6 inches of snow coming. He didn't have minnows. Approx. 18 inches of ice. Supposedly crappie are rebounding well since draining and restock about 10 years ago. I'm planning to head there next weekend and give it a try and will post results.

McKarns / 3/1/2014
« on: March 01, 2014, 06:41:24 PM »
Been out of town working, so haven't been able to check access.  Problably still the same as DNR told me they don't have plow for new truck and wont contract plowing of drive or parking lot. Need a snow melt, not the additional 3 to 6 we are getting tonight.

Been out of town working, so haven't had a chance to check access,  but doubt much better than before. DNR told me they don't have a plow for new truck and they won't contract for plowing the drive or parking area, so most likely un accessible til snow melts.

McKarns still hasn't been plowed by DNR. Drive and parking lot are not accessible.  I put a call into District 2 to find out why. Hope to get response this coming week.

DNR has not plowed road or parking lot to Barton Lake. I checked again today on way back from Nettle Lake and it is not accessible.  Someone got hung up in drive trying to get back to it.

Couldn't get into Barton, so I tried McKarns.  Drive and parking lot had not been plowed for awhile and no place to park even with 4x4. Will try again after warm and some of this snow melts. Guess I'll head for Nettle lake.

Was headed to Barton for some crappie and pike. Got there and couldn't get to the ice; drive and parking lot had not been plowed for awhile and no place on road to park even with 4x4. Will try it again after this coming warm up. Maybe snow will melt enough to get at it. Headed for McKarns.

Fished from 9:30 - 6:00pm. Water cloudy, started in 24 fow marked fish all day but very few takers. Moved to 16 fow on steep drop off and same thing. No catfish today, about 15 dink gills (super light bites) and 6 keeper crappie. Tried ton of different colors and stylies of jigs, waxies, spikes, plastics, minnows, etc. By about 3 pm no one else left on lake. Water stained and snow started about noon and snowed rest of day.  :(

Small Pond Reports / Barton & McKarns Lakes NW Ohio
« on: February 09, 2014, 02:30:07 PM »
Since we don't have separate listing for these lakes yet; if anyone intends to ice fish either before all the snow melts....Good Luck. Went Sat. Morning with intent to fish Barton for crappie & pike, couldn't get near Barton or McKarns as neither driveways or parking lots have been plowed in last few weeks. Couldn't even get in with my big 4 wheel drive truck. :-[
