Title: Back to the docks
Post by: g on January 14, 2017, 02:28:43 PM
It's back to fishing the docks since round 2 is over. Fished Rocky Fork docks for a few hours yesterday and caught 11 - 12 inch crappies, 1 10 1/2 inch perch and some small bluegills. The crappies were completely engulfing a 3/16 vibe. Not as much fun as saugeyes through the ice, but will do until round 3 comes around.

Fished from 9 to 2 at the rocky fork docks this morning. Caught prob 50 crappie and a couple gills. Kept 18 for a buddy of mine. Almost all came on 3.5 mm gold tungsten with blood red tail and a red spike. Water was pretty stained but the fish were really aggressive early. Slowed down as the day went on. And here's your pic snowcone ;D

I  hear you g.
Took my son to Lima for baseball practice and went Lima lake. Ice was maybe 1.5" at the dock.
Caught about 30 small crappie, and about 40 gills.
Like you said they were engulfing the baits.
All suspended over 8.5 ', caught on gold tungsten and wax worm.

Nice job Scott. Too bad they weren't slabs. Still nice to hear you got out and caught  a mess of fish. Small fish beat no fish.

You are right on that g.
It was nice to just get out and catch some, and I got a chance to try out my 4 year old  new Jaw Jacker.

Fishing was terrible yesterday at rocky. Water was dirtier and didn't mark may fish. Only caught 2 shorts and only had 5 or 6 bites on a northland forage spoon tipped with wax worms. Disappointing!!!

g, the fishing was great at Rocky, it was the catching part that was terrible. That is the same problem I usually have.  At least you were able to catch something.

I might try Lima lake and see if 1Bigicehole left any crappie and gills at the dock.

How did you like your jawjackers Scott? Hope you caught some fish with them.

The Jaw jacker was fun. It worked really good.
Only problem was crawling through the railing to set it up and reel in fish.
It would be great on open ice.

Got to Rocky around 8 this morning and questioned my sanity the way the wind was howling. Turns out I made the right decision, the fish were definitely hungry. Fished for 2 hours or so and caught over 20 crappies, one of these days I need to count how many I catch. Only a few short fish. All caught on 3/16 pink vibe. The active fish were between 8 and 15 feet, couldn't catch anything on the bottom. Jig it above them and watched them come up and hammer the vibe.Would have fished longer but the hot docks faced the wind and was tired of getting brain freeze. Fun morning in brutal conditions.

Made it down this afternoon. Fished from 2 to 545. Was questioning my sanity also as it started snowing on the way down and got worse the closer I got to the lake. Snowed the whole time. The bite was a little tougher than it sounds like it was yesterday. I caught em but they were scattered all over and there were a lot of shorts mixed in. Ended up with prob 15 keepers between 9 1/2 and 12 1/2 inches but I let them all go. Most fish came on pink/white glow tungsten with a pink tail and a spike. Got a few on a red glow rattle spoon.

Good job Aaron. I questioned my sanity too as hard as the wind was blowing Sat. Was still a fun morning. Glad you were able to get some anyway. The way the wind i blowing and supposed to blow this week, Indian is looking slim so may have to hit the dock again Sat.

Don't swear like that Aaron. LOL. I will probably work Fri. night since I don't think Indian will be happening, and then head to Rocky when I get off at 6:30. Glad you got out and caught some Rusty. What did you catch them on?

I talked to grant on his way home as I was headed down there. He said it was slow all morning. Think he had 5 keepers, Rusty caught a couple and some other guys were down and maybe caught a couple. I got down there about 230. Had 2 keepers in the first 5 min. Slowed down a little after that. I bounced around from dock to dock all afternoon. Caught around 25.10 keepers. Fish are there just scattered and not very aggressive. All fish came on a 3 mm white/pink tungsten with a pink tail and a spike. Did see Steve (not sure his name on here, met him at the dock tourneys) he showed up late afternoon and was still there when I left. Gonna head back in the morning. Taking a buddy who wants to get into winter fishing.

Good job Aaron. Wonder why my post didn't go through yesterday. Fished wit Rusty, Mark , Jeff and Keith. Fishing was tough. Didn't mark the number of fish as usual on my normal dock. Everyone caught some fish but not many. I caught 5 keepers and 4 shorts and Rusty had 2 keepers and threw back 1. I think Jeff caught the big fish, a 12 1/2 in. fish. Still a good time and got to meet 2 new friends.

I fished CJ Brown marina docks yesterday from 11-4:30.  It was absolutely horrific.  I marked ONE fish that seemed spooked by my microjig and waxie.  I fished basically every dock in the marina and holehopped to numerous spots on each one.  It was incredibly frustrating, since I drove an hour from Columbus just to try out my Showdown troller 2.0 after getting it back from Marcum.

What a frustrating season.

Anyone know if Clear fork or Charles Mill marina docks stay in and are allowed to be fished in the winter?  I have GOT to use my ice stuff successfully again this winter...

That was me that caught the big crappie. Mark measured it at 13in. That was the only keeper I caught. Still a good time.

It was definitely a slab. Great catch even if it was your only keeper. It was nice meeting you and I will probably see you again at Rocky.
