Some would think that after 2 days of minus 20-minus 40 with wind chills the ice would be good everywhere........don't be fooled into that thought. I was out today punching holes all over st. marys and literally went from good solid 6" of ice to 1 hit with the spud 5' away and my heart jumped through my chest cause the spud went through the double layer of ice we have. These have to be the worse condition 1 could ask for, good solid hard ice, to the double layered snow covered ice. The bad part is where the spud went through both layers (ice water ice) it was clear of all snow. All I can say is, use a spud, buddy system and some common sense to ice safety.
