All,
Ive been interested in using a shorter rod (17 - 18) for some time now however; the choices are pretty slim. The St Croix Legend Silver/Gold series have been discontinued and replaced with the Legend Black series which has a 17 model. There is also an Avid Ice Rod that has an 18 option. Otherwise, looking at other brands I cant find anything else.
Does anyone know of other makes/models that are shorter?

I've got several shorter rods. They are hard to find but they are out there. I have a couple clam but I know they are discontinued. And no.8 tackle co used to have a couple models but I'm not sure if they still make them or not. Check eBay if you can't find em anywhere else. I believe a shorter rod is critical on Indian for jigging panfish. Gives you a lot more control. Let me know if you can't find anything. I might have an extra one

Amazon has St. Croix and Fenwick; 16" - 17", pricey.

look into 13 fishing rods (maker of the black betty ice reel)they have a good selection available, look on Fish usa.............. ;) ;) ;)

I use a 17 Jason Mitchell sight Fishing rod (still in production) when I go short. This year Ive been experimenting with longer (30+) rods. Seeing if staying back from the hole would change anything, seems the bass like it. Been killing them. But lure control is a little better with short rods. Thinking this might be why my panfish totals might be off from normal. Ive still lost count on panfish, but something is off my normal. Way more shorts than I usually get.

I think frabill and ht have 18iin rods

Thanks - I think I may go with the St Croix Legend Black if I can't find anything else. I guess I may have to dig a little deeper.

Thanks for the advice guys - I'm going to dig a little deeper over the next few days and I'll post what I find....

I went on the manufactures sites and most of them have the shorter rods. It seems that a lot of the online stores dont carry them hence thinking the pickings are slim.
Thanks for all the advice on this guys!

I can go through the rod bags and see what I have, there must be something in there. I'm sure there are some old school ones that would be reels taped on. I'll check tomorrow and let you know.

Your gear is very limited Mr Quackpot I would hold onto those you might need them. ;D

Its ok Bobby, I have a couple to look at at the show. Whatevver I get I want to put on the St Croix style spring bobbers because I like them. I have figured out hoe to do that...

Nate you know I have plenty of rods, I think about 65 or so.

Joel, they all have them....just think of a new St Croix, Frabil, Clam, HT Enterprises, No 8 Tackle Company or, 13 Fishing short rod. Think of the enjoyment youll get out of one. Think of the extra space in your shanty when you go from 24 to 18. Think of the reduced stress on your wrist as you jig with a lighter rod. Think of the magic glide up and down as you jig. Think of the extra catch and the lighter bite youll be able to detect. Think of the the fight with the shorter rod. Think of the view of that fish coming into your ice hole. Think of how you caught it with your short rod. OMG you need one, you have to have one. Even though you probably have a few....you need one more!

I like the way you think!!!! I can always use more. 5 in that size just isnt enough! ;D

They are fun Andy. I don't know if you saw my 16 inch UL when we were crappie fishing that day but it's a blast to fish with. Catching a keeper saugeye on it was awesome. ;D
