General Discussion / Re: need some experience advice about night lights
« on: February 03, 2015, 11:44:55 AM »
ordered a green l.e.d. submerseable light from broadway tackle in georgia, will post results after i receive it and give it a try, supposed to draw in plankton which draws in minnows which draws in fish, thats the theory anyhow.  ???

Green should be a good light.

I used green glow sticks and hung them just about a foot above the fish in the summer.  I'm not sure if a glow stick would work in cold water.

I'll check into the light you bought or make one up.  Several of these sealed in a plastic jar should do it.

Posted the wrong link.  These are larger an brighter than the ones I posted. https://www.sparkfun.com/products/8861

You might want to consider weight also. Some two man flips are pretty heavy as opposed to one man flips where you give up a lot of space. Pop up hubs are light weight and roomy but wind could be a factor.  The one man flips just aren't enough room for me. I went to a suitcase style shappel with skis due to I'm getting to old to pull the heavy 2 man flips. Weigh your pros and cons and your fishing style and you will be fine. Good luck!

Same for the 2 man Gander Mountain I have.  Little buddy is a great unit.

The gander is a pull hub style so I can still run n gun with it.

It comes with 6 very sharp ice anchors and 2 tie offs for the pull hubs.  The bottom edge has 4 grommets for the anchors.  No floor.  But I made one from the Harbor Freight anti fatigue mats.  I tapped the mats together using Ice n Cold tape from Home Depot.  The floor is 6' by 58" hinged on the 58" center line with the tape.  Worked out great.  I made a elevated sled, and the floor slides under it.  I'll post a sled thread later today. Wife goes to work at 1 and I can then set up in the garage for pics.

if you click the do not click here it will open a question to answer if you get it right you can add suggestions on how to improve the fish ohio site....happy fishin

Actually it is an ad for AIMBOX.  When you submit an idea and give your email, it registers you to an AIMBOX account and offers to promote your idea for a small fee.

Even if you do not pay a fee, it creates an AIMBOX account for you and sends you an email with an account name and password.  When I entered my email, I thought I was giving it to an IFO Moderator looking to improve the site.

Aimbox is an idea promotion company. http://aimbox.com/

So it is actually a trick to register your email with them.  Not the type of thing I would expect to see on IFO.  I am very disappointed that I saw your comment, because now I am registered with Aimbox.  I will try and see if I can delete the Aimbox account.

So far, I have not seen a way to do it.  Aimbox is a site similar to Kickstart.
The idea is people see your idea and give you funds to pursue it.  Then Aimbox charges you 25% of the funds you get.

So when I tried to follow your advice, I got sucked into a scam registering me to an Aimbox account.

But then I'd get slime all over my good tape measure.... LOL

Slime on a tape could be a good thing.  After baking in the sun of a construction site, the smell will keep your tape measure from disapearing.

Way to go Lee.  Looks like 25.5 if thee tape was under the fish end to end instead of above it.

Went off the cemetery before dawn. Snow on the ice made it a difficult walk even with skis on the sled. A few panfish. Then I had to leave.  Ice was 5" about 60 yards out.

Tip up rack. Room for 6. It has room for the ice hole covers and I am going to put some small plastic pipe in it to hold the rods.

Inventions / Reachable Rod Holders & Tip Up Rack

Us old folks sometimes have difficulty bending down to reach a rod holder at ice level.

I had some left over 4 inch plastic sewer pipe.  I cut it into six 10" sections and strapped them to a milk crate using strong wire ties.  You have to either heat 4 of the 6 to flatten them a little, or cut a vertical slot in 4 about as wide as a yard stick.  This allows the center one in each row to be fully round, but get 3 in a row in the width of the milk crate.

So now I had a rack for transporting 6 tip ups.

I had 2 Berkley ice rod holders and a Berkley bucket rod holder.  Turns out the tangs on the bucket holder fit into the gaps of the milk crate grid. I use this holder for my walleye rod with the fly casting reel on it.  This reel avoids line twist.  I have 2 spring bobber rods that fit the ice rod holders.

So to raise them off the ice, I used 2 wire ties for each ice rod holder.  I put the ties loose enough on the bottom of the milk crate to allow the holder to slip out of them, but be held securely while in use.  The holders are removed by first pulling the short end free, then rotating the holder to clear the second tie. And if one milk crate is not high enough for you to reach comfortably, just stack in on another upside down crate.

I have one I carry, its really handy...  I have a pop up with no floor and i learned not to clear all the snow inside because the melt down leaves me in a puddle,  ::)

I use the harbor freight 1'2" thick anti fatigue mat sets to make a 6' x 6' floor for my 2 man pop up.  I made cut outs for the holes.  Hopefully any melt down under the mat drains into the holes or outside the hut.

I used the Ice and Snow tape from HD to tape all the floor sections together.  Made a center hinge with the tape too.  This way the floor folds in 1/2 lengthwise and tucks under the bin of my ice sled for transport.

Wife, " You spending all this money just to get out ice fishing a few days for 3 months? "

Me, " No, being retired, I am spending it to be on the ice every day possible to fill the freezer, and get out of the house. "

Wife " You mean, I can have lots of relaxing days!!.  You need more stuff so you can stay out at night too. "

I carry a stove for a shore lunch on fresh trout.

For ones I take home that do not survive the trip, I soak in a brown sugar / brine over night.  Then into the smoker they go.

Or bake stuffed with crab meat.
