Any good warm clothes layered will get you started. A good pair of waterproof insulated boots is a must!   As for gear, start simple until you know if you like it. A 6"hand auger, a couple rods designed for the fish you're after, and a few lures. The rods and lures will vary with what you're fishing for. Also a flasher is very helpful for making the trip more fun. You can actually know if you're fishing near fish!  ;D If you have a fish finder on a boat, most can be adapted to ice with a little MacGyver action and save $ on the flasher. But if you get serious, I'd get a flasher. Last thing is a gear sled. You can but a kids sled at any store and use it. Just drill a hole in the front and run a rope thru it. Now all your gear goes in there and no carrying anything. A camp chair, auger, bucket, gear, it'll all fit in there.

If you love it, then look into a power auger, shanty, buddy heater, and top of the line rods. But wait til your hooked to get all that!   Which should be by your second trip!  :o

And for proven success take any info on fishing that slab
recommends and do the opposite and you will have success! 8) :o
Just kidding, this site is packed with great ice fisherman and even better information! With ice fishing start out slow and enjoy the experience . Always remember to bring some safety gear along with you on your trips, and try to never fish alone..."there is no safe ice". But with some good advice and this site it can be some of the most enjoyable timed outdoors you may ever have!

I knew I forgot something!   The most important things, safety gear. If you have a spud bar, cleats, a whistle, and picks you'll be set. Those items aren't that expensive. But they can save your life!

Best bet find someone that is experienced in ice fishing in Ohio and go out with them....most of us have enough safety gear, rods, lures etc for 6 people so you really wouldn't need anything but warm clothes and a set of ice picks and maybe cleats....whoever your fishing with should have the rest and it'll help with learning all the safety things and how to check ice etc...

and you should start off with the safety gear, spud bar, pics, cleats, whistle, and some dry clothes back at the car...flotation clothes if you get that into it. theres been a bunch of times that people on the beach I would invite out on the ice for the first time.
