Indian Lake / Re: Long Island
« on: December 19, 2009, 08:37:35 PM »
Feel a bit weird replying to my own post before others do..anyways was at Long Island (second pull off) 2.5-3 inches (4 inches not found as earlier reported in the week) Ice is slushy- lots of stuff on top. Should freeze in the next couple of days. Was only 2 other guys fishing by the time we left (5pm) and everyone was saying the same thing- catching tiny gills every once in a while. Biggest we caught was a 7 inch gill my newbie mentored guy caught- he was excited. Was really surprised how no one was out there. I guess there was a lot more in the morning and on Friday- poor fishing and weakening ice conditions must have drove them all away.

4 fish in 3 hours ...1st time out this year...1st time out ever for my buddy.
Had fun. and most importantly -..got to ice fish in December:)

General Discussion / Ice Line
« on: December 18, 2009, 06:45:24 PM »
I just received my ice line in the mail today. Using Sufix Ice Magic this year. Have used Trilene and Cajun in the past with so-so satisfaction. What ice line does everyone else use?

Indian Lake / Long Island
« on: December 18, 2009, 06:32:15 PM »
1st Ice in Central Ohio means a trip to Long Island- IL. I have heard from others though, that this year is a bit different as water levels are down about 18 inches changing much of the dynamic of our first ice haven. The bigger fish are deeper- in not as safe areas. I will be there tomorrow to check it out. Please stay tuned to these posts as I have heard from the best that it may not be worth a trip this weekend.

Ice Safety!!! / Snow On Ice Forecast for Tomorrow
« on: December 18, 2009, 06:28:13 PM »
Better think twice about walking on snow covered ice. Tonight we are expecting to get 2-3 inches of snow fall and I have expert fisherman telling me that if they can't see the ice they don't feel comfortable walking on it. Thickness was reported to be 3 inches near the shallows of Long Island - IL. If you do fish this weekend follow spud marks and take a buddy. Bring safety gear in case you do go through and always remember....If in doubt..don't go out!

Ice Safety!!! / Indian Lake- Not Safe This Weekend for New Comers
« on: December 18, 2009, 02:48:07 PM »
THE MAIN LAKE HAS ABOUT 1.25" OF UNSTABLE ICE. CHANNELS MAY HAVE UP TO 3 INCHES. THE ICE QUALITY IS NOT GOOD BECAUSE OF WIND CONDITIONS WHEN IT FROZE. THERE ARE OPEN AREAS WHERE HOME OWNERS ARE USING AERATORS. THESE ARE USUALLY MARKED BY LOTS OF GEESE CONGREGATED. THE ICE IS STILL UNSAFE FOR ICE FISHING. INDIAN LAKE STATE PARK RANGERS RECOMMEND 2 INCHES OF GOOD QUALITY ICE FOR ICE FISHING AND 6 INCHES OF ICE FOR SNOWMOBILES OR ATVS. THE LAKE IS LOW BELOW NORMAL POOL (AS MEASURED AT THE SPILLWAY). VISIBILITY IS 10 MILES. WIND IS CALM. THE BAROMETER IS 29.92 °F AND FALLING. IT IS CLOUDY.

Indian Lake / Re: Shanty 2 Share
« on: December 18, 2009, 12:54:56 PM »
I will be out Saturday afternoon with a buddy (Shanty Full) But if you still want to fish together with us, we can probably find more fish together. I don't have a vexilar so one would be welcomed. And if u can't make it out Saturday count on us going when I have room for one in my 2 man.

I gave up on Box stores a while ago. Even their websites offer a very minimal selection of gear. If you are looking for local places - Fishermans Warehouse in South Columbus had a selection already in Novemebr with more on the way.  If you are at Indian Lake- BPS and Mike's both have assortments of ice fishing stuff- BPS has shanty's, augers, ice chippers, buckets, ext whereas Mike's has more line, tackle and bait. Both are great thoughand worth the trip. The shops over there don't open till 7am though and you miss the before dawn bite if you wait to get bait there the day of your fishing excursion. Most of my stuff comes from online these days. I actually have a Jason Mitchell Rod coming from David here at IceFishOhio.com

Ice Safety!!! / Re: Ice Spud
« on: December 17, 2009, 01:32:00 PM »
Good Question. I learned to let the weight drive the spud into the ice and that one drive typically  = 1" so if you hit the same spot 2 or 3 times and water starts coming up then the ice is not safe.

Bait and Tackle stores / Re: Indian Lake

I really like Mike at Mike's Bait Shop. A small place that packs alot of good gear in it. And the bait is very lively. Mike is very nice and has good old fashioned small business values. Unfortunately cash only the last time I checked.

Bait and Tackle stores / Fisherman's Warehouse

I live close to this shop and for a bait store in Central Ohio they do offer a decent selection of ice gear early (November). Small selection compared to the shops around Indian Lake but large compared to local baitshops in Columbus and large retail organizations that have hardly any (Gander Mountain) (Dick's).

Inventions / Tie down rig for bucket
« on: December 14, 2009, 05:20:52 PM »
I am about to drill two holes in the bottom of my sitting bucket to put a bungee cord through and latch to my shanty for travel purpsoes. Have been strapping it down through the top handle and have found it very unstabile and have had the bucket fall a couple of times.

Shanty Help / Re: What Shanty do you like?
« on: December 14, 2009, 05:17:59 PM »
I have a Clam Corp 2000 that I purchased for $179 last year. I like the roominess of it as I can stand up am I am 6' 2". I was hoping tobe able to sight fish however and the blue isn't dark enough to see down the hole. I am in the market for a small black flip over less than $100 to add to my arsenal. The big blue clam corp is good for 2 and even for one big guy (me) but I really want to sight fish.
