Indian Lake / Re: Parking?
« on: January 24, 2019, 09:23:17 AM »
Your best bet for public parking with decent fishing close is probably Blackhawk. The main channel there by the ramp can be good fishing at times and it's not too far too get back to the Lucys pond area. The area usually holds gills and sometimes some crappie and saugeye. Long island area is good but it's roadside parking for the most part and can get really crowded. There are some other places you can get away with parking but it's usually a crap shoot whether you can get a spot. Good luck

Indian Lake / Re: Indian Lake Update - 1/21/2019

Fished several areas of indian today. The majority of the ice is 5 to 6 inches but the top couple is crap.  Cloudy and just basically frozen slush. Theres also some really sketchy areas. Anywhere the snow sat seems to be the worst. Saw 1 spot that the spud went through on 1 hit with 6 inch ice 10 ft away. Another area looked like it just had a thin layer of snow on top but was actually at least 3 inches of slush and water sitting on top of the ice. Had ice underneath it but...Other areas were open water as of sun and have now frozen over but I have no idea what the thickness is. Didn't get anywhere close to it. Anyway as of now it's fishable as long as you are cautious and USE YOUR SPUD!  Not sure what this rain will do to it but with more cold coming we should be in good shape after a few more days.
Fishing was pretty slow most of the day. Only had a couple keeper crappie and some small gills and saugeye to show for several hours on the ice. Found a good school of crappie late this afternoon and ended up with a limit but it took a lot of searching.
Anyway I expect the ice to take a beating, especially in current areas,  but I plan on being out fri or sun. I'll post conditions when I get back out.

Has anyone put eyes on the lake in the last couple days? Was curious how much was frozen before the snow and how much snow was on top of whatever is there.

General Discussion / Re: Flasher Advice
« on: December 21, 2018, 07:48:30 AM »
I just want to put it out there to anyone looking for electronics that although the flasher is a tried and true unit for ice fishing, it isn't the only option. I've never used one. The first unit I bought was a lowrance elite 3 portable. I bought it to use on the ice and also out of my canoe. It had a flasher mode but I found that using just the graph mode was much better for me. I've upgraded a couple times since then and am now using the hummingbird helix 7 as my ice unit. It's amazing. And it goes back and forth between my boat and the ice pack. So one unit gets used the entire year. The graph to me is just an easier and better system. Plus my gps and map card are built right in. And it even has a flasher mode or split screen if you just have to have one. Granted the helix is about twice what you are planning to spend, but there are other options too. Ice fishermen seem to be stuck on you have to have a flasher, but it's not the only way to go.

Just as a side note,  since lowrance has gone to the hook models and ended the elite series, I do not recommend them. I've seen a couple in action and I'm not impressed.

In this pic the blue line is my jig and the 3 green and red lines are fish rising to my bait, just so you can get an idea of what it looks like.

Ok it won't let me post a pic right now. I'll try later.

I headed up there late this morning. First stop was lakeside and the lady working said Blackhawk was actually the best ice she'd heard of. I stopped and there were 5 or 6 guys out on a good 3 inches of clear ice. I gave it a try but I couldn't even get a follow. Think most of the marks I saw were shad. Saw a few gills and 1 good crappie caught pretty quick but then nothing. ..I packed up and looked around for awhile. Found some decent ice on the north side with a couple guys I'd fished with before out on it. Got into a bunch of small gills eyes and white bass. Steady bite on a 1/32 vmc flash champ spoon. goldfish color. No size to anything but it was fun getting out and catching a few.   Playing around with my new helix 7 ice. Pretty happy with it so far. May go out tomorrow before work but it will prob be toast after that.

You sure bobby? Look under your back seat or maybe where your spare tire is supposed to go. There may be 1 in there... Jk
Anyway I don't have a7 inch but if anyone needs an 8 inch I have one for sale. Almost new. I'm too lazy to drill 8 inch holes. I'll stick with my 6. Have a new jaw jacker and rod bag too

General Soft Water Discussions / Re: Dock Tourney
« on: October 16, 2018, 05:20:02 PM »
Wouldn't it? I've been trying to get that for a couple years. Nobody wants to drive that far apparently. I get it. Some guys come from Northern ohio and alum is pretty central so even tho the fishing is quite a bit better at rocky and can be good at cj I think we are stuck with alum. Saturdays are gonna be tough for me this year but I'm off every sun so if we can get some interest we can do some informal tourneys at a couple other places. I know of a couple guys that would do it. Once I kill a deer I'll be down at rocky most chances I get. See you all soon

Sweet deal Dave. You find the fish and I'll come catch em for ya ;D

Yeah those are sweet. I saw a video of ice fishing on Erie with it. Unbelievable. Showed my wife the video. She agreed it was cool until I told her how much they cost. Oh well I've got 8 or 9 months to convince her. Lol

Soft Water Fishing Reports / Re: April crappie action!!

Glad you at least got out. I've been doing pretty well but this weather is driving me nuts. It's like we get 1 decent day a week and I haven't seen a really nice day in weeks. Winds, rain, snow, cold... it's always something. It's gotta break soon. You know something is wrong when it's April and I'm actually getting anything done around the house!
