General Discussion / Mogadore Report Congress Lake Road & Palm Rd.
« on: December 28, 2012, 02:42:33 PM »
Took the morning tour with my grandson to see for myself on ice conditions at the above access points to this East end of the Lake... The first time I ice fished these spots was in 1958, so I can say that I'm well versed on these locations.....YES, THERE IS ICE ....between 2 1/2' TO 3"......"NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS AND THE REALITY OF THE SITUATION"... THERE ARE TWO LAYERS OF ICE WITH A LAYER OF WATER IN BETWEEN ......I SPUDDED THRU IN SEVERAL PLACES AT BOTH LOCATIONS AND THERE IDENTICAL ICE CONDITIONS AT BOTH ACCESS POINTS....THE BOTTOM LAYER SEEMS TO BE CLEARER ICE AND HARDER, ONLY AN 1" OR SO THICK. THE TOP LAYER IS CLOUDY/SOFT AND WATER SOAKED AND ONLY AN INCH TO A INCH AND A HALF THICK (WON'T SUPPORT MUCH WEIGHT).THIS IS ONLY AT THIS LAKE THAT I KNOW FOR SURE OF....BUT OTHERS MIGHT HAVE THESE SAME CONDITIONS.....THAT LAYER OF WATER PUTS A LOT OF PRESSURE ON THE UNDER LIEING SHEET OF ICE.

"I STARTED THIS NEW TOPIC ....FOR ONE BASIC REASON "SAFETY".....EVERYONE IS REALLY SHORT FUSED TO HIT THE HARDWATER AND RELIEVE THE "STRESS" OF NO ICE SEASON LAST YEAR.....SOME LESS EXPERIENCED "ICER'S MIGHT TAKE THE NOTION THAT JUST SEEING OR READING "THAT, YES I SAW/I THINK/I HEARD.... OR SHOULD BE/WOULD BE /COULD BE  AND DECIDE TO GIVE IT A GO BASED ON THIS INFO....AND FIND THEMSELVES IN A "FATAL SITUATION".....
NOT ALL  ICE COVERED LAKES MAKE ICE AT THE SAME RATES OF THICKNESS.... BASED ON MANY/MANY FACTORS "SO PLEASE MAKE DARN SURE THAT YOU FOLLOW EVERY WELL KNOWN ICE SAFETY RULE THAT IS REPEATED EACH AND EVERY SEASON....AND EVEN THAT IS NO GUARANTEE FOR YOUR "SAFETY"....
THERE IS A PREDICTION OF MUCH COLDER AIR MASSES TO OVER-RIDE OUR AREA, IN A FEW DAYS AND HOPEFULLY THESE WILL BE THE ICE PRODUCING SALVATION WE ARE ALL SEKING....PLEASE/PLEASE BE SAFE OUT THERE....

Ice Safety!!! / ICE SAFETY REMINDER (WHEN IT FREEZES)2012-2013
« on: December 11, 2012, 01:43:34 PM »
I was fishing with 2 other guys on a day that had loads of snow/slush/ and standing water on the ice.... As we got to a spot to fish....all was well....we set up within feet of each other, each in his own shanty....caught a few fish and then it really got slow. I decided to move only a few yards away, but still between my friends and still only a few feet from either one of them....Got out. walked a few paces...cut my new holes....walked back... grabbed the pull line on my shanty....returned to the new holes and was only one step from them...and on that step...before you could even blink....I dropped down to my waist....but my momentum kept the upper part of my body laying flat in the snow/and slush...I managed to get back out with out help....The point of all of this is....both of my friends weigh near or passed the 300# range and I only weigh 170# ....we,while getting to our set up spots... had walked all over this area... THATS JUST HOW CRITICAL...STEPPING ON THE WRONG SPOT CAN BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My first break thru's came when I was 18 and 22 years old.........I then fished for the next 45 years without another incident, until this happened....."LUCK OR THE LACK OF IT"... STILL PLAY A GREAT ROLL.........SAFETY WISE, I STILL SAY..... NEVER FISH WITHOUT A BUDDY OR ON LAKES OR PONDS THAT YOU WILL BE THE ONLY PERSON THERE.......I'VE BEEN GUILTY OF THIS , MOSTLY IN MY YOUNGER DAYS.....IF YOU GET INTO TROUBLE ALL BY YOUSELF, YOUR ODDS OF A TRAGIC ENDING GO WAY UP.... I'LL NEVER ICE FISH ALONE AGAIN...EVEN IF IT MEANS NOT GETTING TO GO.......I'M GOING BACK TO CARRYING A "SPUD BAR" FOR JUST THE SAFETY REASON.....I ALWAYS HAVE "ICE PICK SAFETY SYSTEMS" AROUND MY NECK....BUT ALL OF THE SAFETY GEAR IN THE WORLD CAN'T TOTALLY GUARANTEE YOUR SAFETY .....WHEN WE'RE YOUNGER.... WE KINDA LIVE WITH THE THINKING.... THAT BAD THINGS ONLY WILL HAPPEN TO THE OTHER GUY...AND NOT TO ME....IF YOU LOVE ICE FISHING SUCH AS I HAVE FOR OVER A HALF OF A CENTURY....I TRULY WISH EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU (THAT LOVE TO WALK ON THE WATER) A TOTALLY LONG AND HEALTHY/SAFE LIFE TIME..........AND HOPE THAT YOU NEVER FIND YOURSELF IN THE WATER OR IN NEED OF THE SAFETY GEAR YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE WITH YOU...
PS.I have added an ARTIC ARMOUR "FLOAT SUIT".....TO MY LIST OF SAFETY GEAR, but am still in high hopes I'll never have to water test it.......HERE'S HOPING WE HAVE A 2012-2013 ICE SEASON...

General Discussion / LAST ONE OFF THE ICE
« on: February 24, 2011, 12:57:51 PM »
Will the last person to leave the ice.....Please turn out the light.....Sadly it's very/very close to the end.For lots of guy's.... it's totally over already.......I'm still in hopes that there will be at least ONE more (SAFE CONDITION"S) trip with my favorite icing buddy.......He was out two evenings ago and things were still fishable (private lake) and plenty of ice....The biggest kicker is this new set of storms headed our way......More water, either rain or lots of snow...just might find me reaching for the switch.......We ( my friends and I) have all become even more safety minded and have enjoyed a personal sence of well being in our choice to fish this entire season with the Arctic Armour Suits......Nothing is totally fool proof when you start throwing in variables......but doing all you can to at least tip the scales in your favor...don't hurt either..... EVERY NEW SEASON FINDS SOMEONE BEING THE FIRST ONE OUT ON THE ICE IN THEIR AREA AND SOMEONE ALSO BECOMES THE VERY LAST TO EXIT THE ICE.......So if it's you and not me......Please remember the LIGHT DEAL.... Until next season.... GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS and may the upcoming softwater season.... find you healthy/happy/and catchin plenty of your favorite fish............

General Discussion / TRIBUTE AND THANKS TO IFO & DAVID
« on: February 21, 2011, 08:48:31 AM »
Since the best and longest part of this season is now behind us.......and the remainder is passing by even quicker.........I personally would like to take a moment to PRAISE IFO and David for his un-dieing efforts to make this a great and up-coming ice fishing site......This year has seen a growing number of great people all expressing their knowledge/facts/information/and opinion's for the common good of all that choose to use this great highway of communication. I'm fairly new to this site......but I strive to give a standard to this site that it has come to mean to me. His COMMITMENT to this site does not go with out merit...I started this for you the membership also......Please add your thoughts and comments....even it it's a simple THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE.......OR JUST THANKS......Hope that all that I have enjoyed reading their comments this season...... will find there way back to the fold next season.... Oh yes....MY PERSONAL THANKS TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU that make this site great.

General Discussion / Bad Ice Getting To Us In NE
« on: February 19, 2011, 09:30:38 AM »
There was an outing planed for today(from another web-site) and it was cancalled this morning, due to rapid loss of shoreline ice......That was at Ladue Res., where at the boat house access the ice had receded and left open water 8 to 10 ft. shore....There have been some drastic ice condition changes, here in our part of the state over the last 24 to 48 hours....Icebucketjohn and I fished a local area lake (near Kent, Ohio) yesterday and when we came off there was a lot of shoreline rot going on rapidly......and we both agreed that this was our last trip this season..... unless there is a REAL BIG REFREEZE and I mean "REAL BIG".....So time will tell........ but looking like the end is near/or here for us ???......Even tho alot of my friends and I have invested in the floation suits (Arctic Armour) we still do not feel that we are invincible and just go out and wander all over quickly deteriorating ice...BEST TO USE THIS OLD SAYING AT THIS TIME OF THE SEASON (WHEN IN DOUBT, DONT) Please be safe out there we want to see you here next season  ;D  .....................

General Discussion / Mid-Winter Ice Blues!!!!
« on: January 31, 2011, 10:12:21 AM »
Considering it's mid-winter.....ice cover keeps growing on most lakes......we've only had one stint without snowcover (in 2 months)......on almost every lake ...... Which can and does lead to OD(Oxygen Deprivation)...and that can either slow fish down or turn them totally off... for long periods of time. Add 3 to 4 weather fronts ( with pressure changes) each and every week, then toss in lower metabolism rates and last but not least....as can be mentioned(THE LUNAR EFFECTS). One of the afore mentioned factors (singular or in combination with any of the other listed items is more that enough to to make for a finicky bite or change the rate and duration of peak feeding periods....I.E. " Morning and evening time frames. If we all fished totally by the existing negative factors alone .....one would be better off to visit the fish market and come home....sit in an easy chair (by the fire place) but your feet up and wait for winter to exit and the softwater bite to once more begin. This is what keeps true "ICER'S" headed out to their favorite lakes.... to bore their holes thru many inches of ice ......"CAUSE TODAY IS THE DAY THEY ARE GONNA TURN IT TOTALLY ON"................Good fishin and fish safe. PS. also remember!!!!!! the fish you want to catch may only may be only a couple of feet away from the last holes you drill (OUT OF VIEW OF YOUR "VEX") and just dont want to move over that short distance to take your offering.....Doubt that? Just remember those trips that you can't catch a fish out of one of your holes and tear them totally up in the other hole (only a couple of feet away) and your fishing identical rigs, in each hole......makes ya wonder!!!!

General Discussion / OLD METHOD/FOR NEW ICE FISHERMEN
« on: January 24, 2011, 09:32:31 AM »
Thought I'd share this on "Bluegillin"..... Cause each new season brings more and more newbies in to the sport and the more they know the better it is for them..... OLD SCHOOL METHOD. When I first started ice fishing.... in 1959, I quickly learned that ......alot of old timers... used "double rigs" except that.....the jig was always used on the bottom and a lighter weight ANT OR PLAIN FLY....was above on the dropper line...... The lighter fly sinks at a different (slower)rate after your jig gets it to the desired depth.....In essence. you have two totally different presentations as you jig your pole.....The repetitive up and down action of the heavier bottom jig (pin-min) and the floating (pulsating, darting) action of the much lighter fly or ant.....Using two similar jigs works..and is usually reserved for a more agressive bite.........The fly and jig seems to trigger fish on those sometimes finicky days. NOW FOR THE DRAW BACK TO FLY AND JIG COMBO!!!!!!! WHEN LANDING YOUR FISH , AS THEY START UP THE HOLE COLUMN IN THE ICE.....THE FISH ( IF HOOKED ON THE BOTTOM JIG ONLY) HAS A TENDENCY TO PULL IN A MANNER....TO THE SIDE OF THE HOLE AND THUS ALLOWING THE LIGHTER FLY HOOK TO BE JERKED IN SUCH A WAY.... AS TO GET CAUGHT ON THE ICE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HOLE AND THUS LETTING THE FISH ON THE BOTTOM JIG EXCAPE. This does not happen all the time....but can be a pain at times.......and lastly.....Yes, I believe that there are times that any thing other than the smallest jig (singularly fished) has a negative reaction on the fish.......Bottom line!!!!!!!!! Never stick to one presentation.....Be versatile and use change to your benifit...........great fishin and be safe......jON sR .....

General Discussion / ICE MAN MEETING
« on: January 19, 2011, 03:17:02 PM »
One of the greatest things of having your main ice "fishing partners"...not only being just that.....but also owning a local bait and tackle store. I have the pleasure of fishing with Mark....of Marks Live Bait and Tackle and also having him for a close personal friend.....which leads to the title of this thread. On my way home yesterday from fishing a local lake, I stopped by his shop( only about a mile from my house.....to check-in on him and what new in his world....And much to my amazement standing in his store ......Was Joe Pikulski (half of) of Team Troller, who with his fishing partner Myron Gilbert....fish the NAIFC and were viewed on the Versus TV Series....THE ICE MEN....which I'm sure some of you had the chance to watch. After getting introduced to him, by Mark, I was fortunate enough to get to spend the next hour and a half....talking/exchanging/and other wise having a very fantastik session with one of the "TOP" Ice Men in the world....He has a very impressive back ground in fishing....not only in ice fishing but as a Charter Boat Capt., Both on Lake Michigan and Lake Erie .....One of the biggest things that I have professed over my 50+ years on the ice...and 60+ years on "soft water" is to always "KEEP ON LEARNING"....no matter who I talk to on any level of fishing (in general) I keep an open mind and try to retain "info" as much as I"m presented with at that time.....I try to listen (closely) and refrain from trying to over talk them (as so many do) and take this as a welcome opportunity to LEARN GREAT TIPS FROM SOME GREAT FISHERMEN......Listening to Joe talk about His ICE MEN CIRCUIT tales of greatness and of total discouragement....were nothing short of phenomenal....( as per the tournament) that he and Myron were disquallified because of excepting McD's sandwhiches from one of the onlookers....Total bummer!!!!!! I got to listen to some great tips. and really came away from spending all that time with just a truly great person .....thinking what a real personal method he has of talking to others.....ALL OF THIS FROM A GUY THAT HAS FISHED WITH SOME OF THE BEST FISHERMEN IN THE WORLD. I'd also like to end this up by telling alot of you out there that ice fish and some of you that FISHED THE MOGADORE OUTING THAT THERE IS ALSO A "OGF'ER" THAT I MET AT THAT GET TOGETHER THAT ALSO FISHES ON THAT HIGH A LEVEL "NAIFC"...AND UPON MEETING AND TALKING TO HIM.....I FIND HIM TO ALSO BE ONE OF THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE AND PLEASANT GUY'S THAT I HAVE EVER MET ON THE ICE ANY WHERE IN MY LIFE.THAT BEING "FISH2WIN" (Shaun)... I'LL TELL YOU TO YOUR FACE....WHAT I JUST SAID ABOUT YOU IS TOTALLY TRUEand I personally wish you much success and I'm glad that you get the support that it takes and is needed to fish those tournament situations.......So to Joe and Shaun....God Bless...Fish hard/fish safe/travel safe.....and thanks for becoming a friend.....I'll be 70 next year....and this will have to go down as becoming one of the most interesting ice seasons yet and it's only half way gone...great fishin to all of you and be safe... jON sR.

Mogadore Reservoir / Mogadore CLR Area
« on: January 03, 2011, 11:11:58 PM »
Was at CLR this afternoon and other than some thin spots within a foot or so of shore from run-off.....the ice is tight and strong, to the east ..........Several icers out and fishing was so/so.....Lots of "dinks" but some keeper gill were to be had also......To the west side of CLR there is a patch of open water where the water flows thru the conduit under the road....and that flow keeps the ice erosion factor in play.......Green/Orange/Chart/ pin-min's seem to be working well....on this day....Tomorrow, that's another game.......good fishin guys........jON sR.

Ice Safety!!! / Arctic Armour Suit for Safety
« on: January 03, 2011, 10:46:40 PM »
Last ice season would have been my "last season on the frozen water" after making my way into the water.....after two bad ice incounters.....not going into great details.....but managed to get out of both situations wet and concerned for my well being. After the last mis-hap......I promised my wife and myself that I was done as an "Icer".......I got rid of tons of my gear....and was reserved to the fact.... ice fishing was now a thing of my past. But.....One of my close friends and fishing companions just happens to totally love ice fishing and he started to kid me along (last fall)about not being able to give it up after never missing a season on the ice for over 50+ years straight....and he was right. It was going to be very difficult. I began to think of ways to prolong my decision.....Then... while reading an article on ice fishing, I dialed in on mention of a floation suit....ARCTIC ARMOUR by idigear has revolutionized cold weather activities with their light weight suits of Insultex(tm) which is windproof/waterproof/and buoyant....weighs only six pounds and will float up 850lbs. .......I am in the second week of using my new one, and am totally in love with it. It's that lite/warm/and comfortable to wear.Almost like wearing your shanty.......The fact that if I should by whatever means.... find myself in the water again .....the suit I'm wearing will give me much better "odds" for survival. To see this suit in action go to their web site and view this suit in action on the videos they provide...........This suit has enabled me to continue to do what I have so loved all these years....continue to be on the ice....and yes I still have my old standby ice safety gear at hand with me at all times.........
