If I decide to waste another day there. I'll try some spots with you, or call to tell you where they are not. But, I'm tossing around a 2.5 hr road trip to a lake in eastern Ohio I cut my teeth on.

Grass pickerel. (Teardrop below eye) That's about as big as they get. Still an awesome catch. BTW my nephew and I hit around Long Island today. It was completely dead. No flags, no fish, Ouch!

Snowcone, That's a valid point and sorta what Slabslayer has been saying from the onset. The goal should not be to remove one entire year class of fish, but to remove some from each year class to maintain an optimal ecosystem and allow all remaining fish to grow to their fullest potential.

Crappies have a higher tendency to overpopulate. That is why they are not recommended for stocking in most ponds.

Ever thought of just keeping and cleaning some. Seems a bit wasteful even though it sometimes needs done. There's more respectful ways to reach the end goal than tossing fish on the ice or lawn.

Most of the guys I see doing this are retired or close to it. Seems they have plenty of free time to clean some dinks if their armchair biology degree leads them to believe the ecosystem has exceeded carrying capacity.

Just because gills are small does not necessarily mean they are stunted. Unfortunately some seem to think so and all small fish hit the ice.

A friend and I hit two spots yesterday. Managed 4 keeper eyes, but only two crappie all day. Both around 12". Wind and snow made for some interesting fishing. Nice day for the tip-up hole covers.

South side- (14' crappie on a tip-up, 24' cat on panfish jig and spikes) s/e side- ( 17' perch, walleye on panfish jig, 14' cat on Zipper)

I forgot how much fun it is to drag a sled full of 6 tip-ups, electronics, 6 rods, tackle, minnow bucket and gas auger over a dike full of riprap. ??? Today reminded me. I'm good for the year. Sure I'll forget next year. Use the ramp!!!

Fished from almost sunrise until sunset. Pulled 1 12" crappie, 1 15" walleye, 1 12" cat, 1 16" cat (silly thing was suspended 7' over 14', thought it was another crappie) and 1 7" perch. That was my first ever trip. Not sure I'll ever try it again. Didn't seem to be many of fish in there. Popped probably 30-40 holes tried depths from 6' to 25', 14'-17' seemed to have the only activity. Fish only responded if you ripped the bait away. If the had time to look they passed.

General Discussion / Re: Where to go
« on: January 17, 2014, 04:49:46 PM »
I checked Indian today. Long island area. Bridge had open water under it. The ice I checked was a little thin for all my gear and how I was planning to fish ( full tip-up spread) right at 3". Headed up to KPWA. Checked up ground, all frozen. Didn't walk down to check thickness. Hit pond 33, 3" with a small hole by a tree strait out from the ramp and a second open area out to the right. Checked pond 30. All froze but shore ice too thin to get out to check main sheet. They all might be good to go in the morning. But be advised of the areas I mentioned were open today.

Alum Creek / AC get together 1/25 or 26?
« on: January 16, 2014, 10:06:54 PM »
Even though the lake has opened up a bit. Last weeks single digits have taken enough energy out of the deep old girl that she will refreeze quickly over the next week. I'm hoping it will have a solid 6" or better by next weekend. Any central Ohio guys up for a get together to open up our AC ice season? Or the first weekend in Feb. if the forecast changes.
