Nimisila / farewell for a while

I was hoping to hit the hardwater at Nimi with you guys this year. New Job will be taking me away for a while to a place that barely has water. So hopefully I can keep the Ice dream alive. See you in a couple of seasons.

Nimisila / Ponds at Nimisila
« on: January 24, 2013, 04:15:49 PM »
Has anyone ever fished the ponds along Christman Road opposite the main lake, or the ponds at Nimisila road ramp? I know that they are only 5 feet or so deep but was just wondering?

Nimisila / Nimi ice today
« on: January 22, 2013, 11:36:56 AM »
Did a drive by this morning. The Christman Road side had open water due to the wind. The campground bay was covered. C-6 had allot of open wavy water.  The Comet road side of the lake had ice and snow on it. C-1 was fairly well covered with ice and snow. The South Main side had the best ice. I walked out a couple of feet at the boat launch at the Nimisila Rd ramp. Its coming on quick, it was all open two days ago.

Twas the Night after it Froze Poem
Make it Freeze !

Twas the night after it Froze, when all over the lake
All the Anglers were stirring, “Our spot is at stake!
The Tip-ups were strung with minnows and hooks,
In hopes that a lunker soon would be took.

The Anglers were nestled all snug in their Sheds,
While visions of lunkers danced in their heads.
And Pappy in his Parka, and I in my cap,
Had just placed a bet for the best winters catch.

When out on the Ice there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a snap,
Pulled on the Zipper and threw open the flap.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature flag let loose by a Redear.

Taking more line, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment the hook did stick.
More rapid than me my Pappy he came,
He Laughed, and shouted, and called me a name!

"You Newbie! You rookie! You need to react!
You’re slow! You’re stupid! You’re missing the catch!
It came out of the hole! From my hand it did fall!
Don’t swim away! Swim away! Darn it all!"

As snow drifts that before the winter winds fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So back to the shanty the Anglers they went,
With a bucket full of Minnows, an attitude present.

And then, in a twinkling, I saw on my rod,
The prancing and bobbing of each little nod.
As I drew in my line, and was ready to set,
My pappy exclaimed “you just lost the bet”.

He was Working the line, from his head to his toe,
And the rod was bent, in the fight with this foe.

He landed the fish, now laying on the ice,
When he looked at me and said “boy this is nice”.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, his right jolly old self,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and his mind it was set,
Soon gave me to know, I had lost the bet.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
That I lost the bet, Boy, what a jerk!
When he laid his fingers on my hard earned bucks,
I thought to myself “man this really sucks!

He sprang from his seat, to me he gave a whistle,
And away we all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, when we drove out of sight,
"Good Fishing to all, and to all a good-night!"

Shanty Help / Questions on a shappell 3000
« on: November 02, 2012, 03:49:21 PM »
My Wife and Daughter just gave me a Shappell 3000dx as a B'Day gift (I DO LOVE MY WOMEN!!!!). I was wondering  if the ski option for this is worth the money? Also , any ideas about the adding creature comforts, storage or utilities to it. This is my first shanty so any input is valuable.

Ice Safety!!! / Safe footing on the ice for under $5 bucks
« on: November 01, 2012, 12:41:14 AM »
My Ice boots have a thick semi-hard rubber sole. I found that using a standard hex drive sheet metal screw (#8 X 1/2 inch long), can be driven into the sole without penetrating through it. The rubber holds the screw in well and the sharp hex head bites the ice well. When one wears out just replace it. I bought a box of 100 screws for $4.40. I installed about 34 screws per boot and they work great and were easy to put in. The thickness of the sole determines the length of the screw, I went about 2/3 rds the thickness to determine the length of the screw

General Discussion / season closeouts
« on: February 09, 2012, 12:28:21 AM »
The only positive I see from this poor ice season is that the local sporting goods stores are beginning to discount the ice gear. For instance I saw a shappell 2 man shelter for under a hundred bucks. Unless we get Ice this weekend I'm thinking we may be able to get some deals on otherwise pricey items.

Nimisila / Nimisila ice 19 January
« on: January 19, 2012, 08:52:42 AM »
Was out at Nimisila this morning at 07:45 and the lake is iced over with about 1 inch of clear. I didnt have a spud with me but I did step out on it. It cracked. I stopped at the launches near Eddies bait and down by the Falcon the whole lake looked iced over. I'm sure hoping the forecast stays favorable.

Nimisila / Nimisila ice an fishing report
« on: February 22, 2011, 05:41:50 PM »
Went out today. Plenty of ice. Went in around the Falcon end of the lake, had to search for a place to get on the ice but once I found a solid place it was safe walking. Near the shore(10 feet or so) it can get a little interesting, but I drilled test holes and found that the ice was still 6 inches of clear ice topped off with 4 inches of white ice.  On my way out to my spot I drilled 5 holes and every one was around 10 inches total thickness. I caught a mixed bag of gills and sunfish 2 feet off the bottom in 5 feet of water. The fish were really curious today, they would follow the bait all the way to the top of the hole while I was jigging. My fishing bud caught 5 nice gills and I caught 15, so it was a good day.

Fished today for about two hours. The ice was 12 inches thick with about 6 inches of white ice. Nice and warm on the lake. Caught 10 gills in 6 feet of water up by The Falcon Lounge, 5 of them were keepers.

Sled Help / my sled prototype
« on: February 09, 2011, 01:55:45 AM »
Got an old broken sled from the kids and came up wth this idea. The large bucket carries tackle and tools and also offers support for the auger during transport on the ice. The load of the bucket seat is carried by the bottom of the sled on the ice when I'm sitting on it, not the plywood deck. The small blue coffee can is for garbage. The whole thing weighs in at around 20 pounds(with minnows and water). Below the plywood deck is storage for tip-ups. All the accessories on the deck are held in with friction and do not fall off when moving on the ice. I have a 20 foot rope to pull it with that can double as a rescue rope if my partner goes in. I have been working on this for a couple weeks, off and on. Been using it and working out the bugs. my intention is to fine tune the design for use next year.
