Can someone give conditions off catawba? Ice. Cracks. Road. Thanks

Yesterday there was deep snow and slush underneath in spots, very tough going on a quad. Tracked transportation would be the way to roll right now.

I fished 6.3 miles out yesterday and today with some fellas that came down from Canada. These guys were some very good sticks and they don't use any flashers or fish finders.Yesterday we pulled 53 through the holes but only 17 today. The hot color pimples were blue crushed ice and silver with green prism.
The ice is getting bad very fast and I certainly wouldn't go out unless it's on an airboat.I've never seen airboats like these guys had,a 16' tracker and a 14' crestliner with rotax motors. They said they can run on 3" of ice and not break through. My old airboat with a big block would break through 6".I know what this summer's project is gonna be.

I witnessed them writing tickets at Whites Landing and that is a private ramp.

I have a 10" barracuda with the 3 hp tecumseh motor. It's at least 20 yrs old and I've never had a problem with it.It allways fires on the first pull.

Today was the worst day I've ever had at the islands.I made 5 moves from around Green,Rattlesnake,Catawba.I don't think I marked three fish all day.I've never had a day like that, fri.wasn't much better.I wish I could get out further west.

That trail is in very good shape, much less current where the far west trail is.I just couldn't find fish and I drilled plenty of holes and covered a whole lot of ice.I've never had a day when I couldn't even mark them on the vex.It was the slowest day I've ever had on the lake.

I was out today fishing the islands, slowest day I've ever had.I had a couple friends fishing Starve reef the last couple days and have doing pretty good. They pulled their gear off today as the ice is getting thin, they said they lost 4" today. They said one fellow fell through the ice walking from one shanty to another and a quad went through on the trail heading to Shrocks/Mazuriks.I talked to some guys in the State park lot that had ridden around the point all the way to Starve. These guys were from out of town and had no idea what kind of trouble they could have gotten into. They said water was shooting up out of the cracks as there quads went past. That was on the way out!!When they got back they told me the ice is getting bad everywhere, not true where I fished.

In my opinion that area is the most dangerous spot off Catawba.I've been ice fishing off Catawba for 40 yrs and I know for sure when the current starts moving over those rocks and reefs the upswell eats the ice from the bottom up.There is a reason that area is the last to freeze.

Watching those quads crawl around Mouse and out into the pass makes me cringe, those guys have much bigger stones than me.Somebody's gonna get wet, again.

I guess what I'm trying to say is,if you're planning on fishing Starve, you might want to reconsider.Good luck and be safe out there.

I just got back from fishing around Green Island.I caught one that was 28" and lost another that was even bigger. They both bit at the same time.I had a chrome and blue jiggin rap with minnows on the treble hook and one on the stinger in my left hand.In my other hand I had a silver #7 pimple with green prism and minnows on it.I had both fish hooked and put the rod in my right hand on the floor and put my foot on it to keep it from going down the hole until I landed the fish on the other rod.Halfway up it came off and that was the lure with the stinger. After that I missed a couple more.I didn't really mark a lot of fish but I didn't see any shad either.

As far as going to South Bass on quads from Pebble beach or Mouse Island,I myself wouldn't do it.I've fished around there before when we had much better ice and there has allways been sketchy ice around there. The current hasn't been bad the last couple days but when it turns on it can eat the ice up very quickly from the bottom up.

I went to Green today from the the State Park but don't take that as an endorsement for safe ice, make your own decision and check conditions as you go out.I myself feel much better going way west before going around the Catawba point.I drilled about 10 holes on my way over to check the ice, everywhere I drilled was at least 10" but that doesn't mean it's all that thick.Use your spud ,be careful and good luck.

I'm not familiar with a wreck off Catawba, but I was fishing Clinton reef area. It's the same problem as everywhere else, too many shad.I've heard of very few fish being caught. That's why there's no reports, nobody waisting their time or gas.I prefer to fish around Davis Besse but the ice is still moving around to the west.I was getting ready to unload at the state park when a fellow told me he'd just come from Green Is. and had to go to Camp Perry to get to shore. He said a 100 yd. wide crack had opened.I don't know if it was the crack just on the other side of the shove or the crack out by Green.

Fished again today 8-2pm.fishing was very slow.Only 6 keepers. The springs continue to open up,even some of the smaller ones.Be very careful around the first spring.I've got the first spring marked on my gps and it said it was 40' away from where I was standing, which was open water yesterday.Caught bullheads on the second spring so I moved to the third and only caught 2 perch.

Fished again for 3 hours and only had four keepers for my effort. The current was going out today and the water was very milky where I was.One word of caution,Whites Landing is no place for first timers or new icefishermen, with the current ice conditions. There are thin spots and open holes around the springs.I saw a guy walk next to a spring whithout a spud this morning.I spudded the same area yesterday and went through with two wacks, about 2"of ice.The ice is getting eaten away from the bottom by current and the springs. The first two springs are open and the third is covered by a very thin layer of ice.Very spooky in spots,be careful and use a spud.

I've been fishin the bay alot since 12/18.The ice off Whites Landing is 5-6" where it was 12-14" last week. The springs are wide open again so use extreme caution and your spud bar.Did pretty good on perch today well away from the springs,4' of water.

There's no way I would attempt going out Sunday. If not the first,I'm usually one of the first out there.I've fished that area many years and you can go from 10"-2" in a matter of feet, seen it many times right off the state park.Once you get north of Catawba peninsula then you have current to deal with. One good thing about this warm up,it should smooth out the shove ice up against shore.Unless you're using an airboat, wait till it stiffens up,it's early yet.
