Dale Walborn / Ice conditions
« on: January 24, 2010, 10:32:15 PM »
Was out Friday.  Ice iffy in places, varied form 1 1/2 to 6".  Caught 15 or so nice crappies, and a handful of bluegills.  Don't know what today's rain will do, I'll check it out tomorrow.

They are terriffic bait for bluegills and crappie.  I've been lazy this year and not gone after them, however when I do my catch rates improve.  I collect a bunch and leave them in the balls until that morning or the night before I go.  Keeps 'em fresher.  I'll collect several hundred and put them in a 5 gallon bucket.  Well worth the effort in finding them.

Was wondering where and how everyone fishes for crappie.  I like Deer Creek(Stark Co.) and Atwood.  I mostly vertical jig with minnows and waxies.  I'll go into more detail later, running out of time now.

I've already got my crappie for the year, 13 3/4.  Now I'm looking to get a bluegill before ice out.  Bass is always easy.  The 4th one's the kicker.  I've had 6 Master Anglers from 2000 on.  It helps when you can fish a private pond with a gimme crappie and bluegill (thanks, Dad!).

Very well put ratherbefishin.  A good pair of ice cleats can also help a lot.  I learned the hard way how valuable they are.  Traction is essential on the ice.

You can make your own with green garland for a christmas tree.  I have reel weeds and they do work well, it just takes patience for them to draw the fish in, I'll set them up and leave it alone for an hour or 2, come back and bluegill and crappie will be in there.

I agree, if you are targeting panfish, though, go with a 1 or 2 pound line.  Look at diameter, it is critical to get a small diameter line.  Try some gill pills or genz worms for the pans or crappies.  If you have the $ a good flasher is essential.  Love my Vexilar, but a friend has a Mar-cum and he loves his, they are a little less expensive than a Vex, but are still a quality product.  If you can upgrade to the zoom feature, they are worth the money, if you can afford it.

The bite was great on Berlin before the warm up with firetiger vib-e's and firetiger jigging raps, both lures tipped with a minnow head on the rear hook.  Bite was on North of Rt. 224 bridge.

Bait and Tackle stores / Fin, Feather, Fur

Fin has a large selection of ice fishing tackle and equipment every year.  I haven't made it yet this year, but a friend of mine has and he says its like usual.  They have a lot of stuff; lures, shantys, augers, and misc. equip.

Was out on Walborn yesterday near Canton.  Caught 15 crappies and a handful of bluegills in 2 hours before I went to the sportsmans show.  Ice was varied, from complete holes the size of 55 gallon drums to 5" of clear ice with 1 or 2" of milky ice on top of that.  Need to use caution, but some lakes are still fishable if you spud your way around.

Show seemed to be a success Friday.  Generated a lot of interest in our sport and site.  Nice to get to meet some of the different people involved.

Love the colored gulp maggots for crappie and bluegill.  Have used some of the smaller minnows for crappies with good success.  All of this thru the ice.  They do work great in soft water, too.  My wife caught a 5# bass from Sippo this summer on a 3" gulp shad.

I like spinning reels because they are easier for me to work 1 lb line with.
