Title: Carp thru the ice?
Post by: slabslayer on December 01, 2013, 09:15:04 PM
Got the in-Fisherman ice guide last week and was reading the article about carp thru the ice.  I've actually fished for carp on ice before. It can be tough, but it's a lot of fun when you hook up with one. The local parks here in Canton all are full of monster carp, and they can be a fun distraction since the ponds freeze before the bigger lakes around here. I'll use a #10 circle hook with a little wonder bread and they can't resist it! ;D  It is a blast pulling a 36" carp thru an 8" ice hole!

Any other IFOers out there ever drill a hole and fish for carp?  If so what do you use?

Never went out to fish for them but caught 2 last season on Jigging rappllas during the dock tournaments.

They were monsters and they had the bait in their mouth. It took awhile on 4lb test.

My wife caught a Fish Ohio carp at Indian one year when she was fishing with me.  It took a live minnow on a slip bobber on 4# test.  It took a long time to coax it through the 7" hole.  We had been targeting saugeye and crappie, the carp was a by-catch.  I have snagged them before with jigging raps.

I think you could have a lot of fun catching them if you could locate a large group and not spook them when drilling your holes.  I would rather target game fish, they make much better table fare than old bugle mouth.

I have to admit 40+ years ice fishing and NEVER brought a carp up thru the ice...so if your fishing around a red pop up and you hear a loud bang I must have hooked a carp...

hahhah   but I would never do that to a catfish... :D

:)  Catfish are almost $7.00 a pound and you can't give a Carp away.

Come to the carp tournaments on Grand Lake, we will pay folks to take them out of the lake.  Just leave all the game fish, please.

Slaabslayer.....I wouldent mind catching a carp through the ice. If you ever want any company let me know. sounds like a good time and a chance to use some tip ups.

I still don't get the catfish joke. I have one lake that I can reguraly catch channel cats on. Its the only time of year I will keep and eat them. They taste so much better and hammer a vibie.
