Everyone has their own setup, here is what I do: 15-20lb tip-up line with a 8lb fluorocarbon leader tied with a blood knot. I use a VMC Inline 5537 Treble Hook. <-- this hook has one shank that's longer than the other two.

the problem with spooling them up with mono is they are like a huge spring of line the next year when you go to use them. I use dacron http://www.flyshack.com/DisplayItem.aspx?ItemID=103020&src=froogle&gclid=CMPfy4TGgLwCFclaMgodHBEAJA (http://www.flyshack.com/DisplayItem.aspx?ItemID=103020&src=froogle&gclid=CMPfy4TGgLwCFclaMgodHBEAJA)
like that then use fluro carbon as a leader......as light as I can get away with usually 6 lb test

I switched to the Clam Arctic warrior tip ups a few years back and got rid of all of my traditional tip ups. These things work great and are quick and easy! You just use any pole and Velcro a bracket to your poles handle. You can pick these up off of Amazon.

I like a product called an HT rigger. Simple to use and they use a rod. I prefer a device that uses a rod. JawJacker, Quickfish, HT Riggers, and the like are all great products that are easy to carry and use your rods for easier fish fighting.

I have a setup that can be found on youtube that uses a piece of wood leader, wire hanger and an ice pole that you can set at different sensitivity levels and it will set the hook or you.. It's a nice setup. Check out the link to see my pics that I posted under inventions...

I use the ht tip ups. When they go off you can see the pin spinning on the top just grab it and set the hook. I have had just about every kind you can buy. They work the best.

Hey Chilly Willy, your tip-up question depends on the species of fish you are targeting. I would use Dacron tip-up line if targeting pike, but 4lb or 6 lb if targeting panfish. Maybe 6# or 8# for eyes.
The only time I use tip-ups is if I am traveling and looking for pike. Moving around and actively jigging seems to catch way more fish.

tip ups, i love 'em and hate 'em. they're a good tool to have if you're gonna be out all day, but if you're gonna move very much/far they're a waste of time. if you're gonna fish a particular area for an extended period of time, (creek channel, point, sunken island etc.) set them at different depths, and if you get a lot of flags in a certain spot , move and start jiggin there. they're used mostly for bigger fish, but i've caught crappies, gills and perch on them. i'm old school. never used the ones that hold a fishing rod. something about fighting big a fish without a flexible rod and a drag... just your arm, is fun to me. i spool mine with black tip up line, easy to see on snow and ice, pound test doesn't matter. add a barrel swivel, 2 to 4 foot mono leader for the fish you're after. beads or spinner blades above the hook won't hurt. check them often, in cold weather your holes will freeze quick, and if a flag goes up, you don't want to chop your tip up out of the ice, costing you a fish.(don't ask me how i know). hope this helps.

I agree with the above. Best times I have had running tip-ups have been when fishing for gills in shallow water (gives you something to do while waiting) and close to deep water catching bass on them for fun. Nothing like a day of one going off and running to the next one after you just set that one. BTW they are always the furthest ones apart.

Another lil tip, put the smallest red and white plastic bobber on ur line once you find ur depth . The fish won't feel it and you don't have to reset ur depth after every bite. I also put bells on my flag poles so if you don't see it you'll hear it. Good luck.
