Title: Indian Lake GRASS PICKEREL haha
Post by: MW-Fishing on January 27, 2014, 10:21:54 AM
My neighbor and I went fishing yesterday around 11:30am. We started @ Dunn's Pond and found out that was a dead hole. So we packed up and head to the Nature Preserve around 1:30. We had pretty good success there catching Bluegills, Pumpkinseeds, and my neighbor caught a baby muskie. I couldn't believe it! I never heard of anyone catching a muskie out of Indian Lake before. Ice conditions were great. Dunn's pond had around 5-6 inches and the Nature Preserve had 8-9 inches.

It might be a pickerel, but I'm looking at the vertical lines on it and they look more like muskie marks than the vertical/horizontal squarish chain line marks of a pickerel. Plus its a darker color than a pickerel. However a pickerel makes more sense in Indian Lake than a muskie.

It looks more like a small tiger muskie to me. I could be wrong, but notice the difference between the above fish and the pickerel I got 2 weeks ago at Nimi. My fish has a distinct 'chain' marking on its side, the above fish is lacking this marking. Also absent on the above fish are the reddish pectoral (side) fins on the pickerel below.

Grass pickerel. (Teardrop below eye) That's about as big as they get. Still an awesome catch. BTW my nephew and I hit around Long Island today. It was completely dead. No flags, no fish, Ouch!

Nice catch. I was thinking chain pickerel only. I looked up grass pickerel and that was it. That's why this site is so awesome, we get it right eventually! No thanks to me. ;)

I just looked up grass pickerel and that's definitely what it is. Thank you everyone for you help! Never seen one or caught one of those fish in my life, especially at Indian Lake. I'm glad to say I learned something new today. Looks like I'm going to have to change my topic title. ;)
