Title: Florocarbon Leaders
Post by: icebucketjohn on November 10, 2014, 04:08:50 PM
... have never used Florocarbon Leaders for my winter panfishing exploits, but gonna give it a shot this season. I'll still be using braided Berkley Fireline Crystal as my base line.... various lbs on rods... 2-6lbs

Lb test Florocarbon recommended: Ohio Inland Lakes
Length of Florocarbon Leader?
Knot usage for tying the 2 lines together?

I've never used a leader. But I spool all my rods but 2 with ice fluorocarbon. They range from 1, 2, 4, and 6 pound weights. I like the invisibility and sensitivity of flouro.  But on occasion I've noticed that the Brekley ice blue mono 1 or 2 pound test has actually outperformed the flouro, but that doesn't happen often.

Have never tried fluorocarbon before. I do use mono leaders on occasion and attach them to a barrel swivel. Usually when I want to use a lighter line or if I use a lure that is prone to spinning I use a leader. May have to give fluorocarbon a try. I know several people that swear by fluorocarbon.

I think that is the way to go.

I have been using Flora and spooling the whole reel. Floro tends to have a lot of memory which makes the spooled line useless after awhile and is expensive.

I am going to fill the spool with mono and then use a floro leader. It will save money and probably use one spool all season.

Just have to learn the knot that combines the two lines. There is a video you tube that i need to find and post.

I think that knot is called a "blood knot"

I use 8# power pro braid with a 3-6' fluorocarbon leader with 2-4# test depending on my target species.  I have used improved clinch knots to join the two lines since the blood knot keeps the tag ends together where the clinch knots are apart.  Even my clinch knot can hang up at the bead of my spring bobber.

I like the braid since it lasts forever and hangs nice and straight in the water.  As David said, the fluoro is pricey and tends to develop coils due to the memory.

Give your line a couple squirts of a product called line magic and your fluorocarbon will be limp and hang straight. I love that stuff!   I use it on my bass rods all the time and it works on my ice lines too.

I ALWAYS use a flora leader on all my lines, and I always tie them to the main line with a barrel swivel this also helps eliminate lure spins. I like to use at least 1 lbs less than my main line. Hope this helps. ps Please do not share any of my secrets to successful fishing with Holhisle. ;)

Is that CRV making an appearance? I can't wait to out fish him again this season.

I have braid and mono and floro, I like the 5 lb blue power pro .   its all in the barrel swivel and the leader. I don't buy mono anymore after using braid, floro is is good leader line, works great on trout.
