Title: The Jinx
Post by: snag on November 30, 2024, 11:35:55 AM
I hope I'm not going to jinx the season. Especially since the past 2 seasons haven't been cold enough for me to step out onto the ice. But, I have to say, it's looking very encouraging!!

Yes, it is.
It seems to be in a 2 year cycle lately.   2 good years, then 2 crap years.   This should be the start of 2 good years!!   Fingers crossed!!

According to predictions, if you believe ACCU weather, for the Indian Lake area for December 2024, the average high = 34.5 deg. F and the average low = 24.2 deg. F  with some rain next Monday and Tuesday. Will this be enough for safe ice? We will just have to wait and see !!!

I just drilled a test hole on my pond today. Only 2 inches so far. Maybe this weekend I'll have 4 inches.

Report from Indian, that they're on the ice. Didn't get a thickness report.

Hard to believe about Indian Lake. My ice is only a little over 2 inches even after a cold night last night. I just cannot enjoy fishing when it isn't at least 4 inches. I bought a new Ice Hopper trigger drop reel that I really want to use this year!  ;D

Accu weather 45 day forecast is not looking too promising for getting good ice this season. >:(  I will not even get my gear out unless we get good ice to avoid the jinx.

It is.   Nothing is safe up here yet.   I checked a few places on Friday and was amazed at the amount of open water still for as cold as it?s been.  Even early ice places had just skimmed over.   That?ll be mostly open again by tomorrow!   >:(

The very end of the 14 day forecast is starting to look promising... C'mon Ohio weather, stay cold!

Are we thinking next weekend should have some good ice cover? Or did this snow mess it up?

I too am wondering if the snow might blanket the ice and keep it from getting thick enough. My little pond is at 2 inches as of Sunday, 1/5/25. I hope to get out this Thursday thru Sunday and maybe beyond.

I broke the ice.....pun intended. 10 inch gill. I got bit all day but only about 5 hooksets. Must have been a lot of dinks down there. Used a very small jig.

This weekend should be great everywhere. I will be going to West Mansfield conservation club lake tomorrow. Today, besides this bass, I caught a lot of small gills and had a big takedown and when I set the hook, it broke the 4 lb line. I love the ice hopper inline reel with a line guide and trigger drop!

What have the ice conditions been like for everyone that has gone out? I unfortunately got sick, so I will be missing this first weekend  :-[

Only 3 inches on my 1/2 acre pond, but it felt solid. Going to a larger lake today and see how thick it is.

I?m hoping to get out soon.   I?ve had several extended family needs arise plus an upcoming knee replacement for my dad next week and I?ve not been able to even check the ice.   Friday I?m going to check, but all the snow up north isn?t good.   Keep us posted how it is down there.   With no ice last couple years, I might make the run to Indian.   But keep hoping for Erie to freeze up decent!

I am in the Union county area and we have good ice. Caught fish in every hole Saturday, but then it died down. I had to move to find the fish. Caught 1 decent crappie plus smaller ones, small gills and several largemouths. Biggest bass was 12". Ice as of today is 4 inches, probably 5 on my pond.

I have been catching a lot of small crappies, gills, and bass the last 4 days. Hoping to get out on Wednesday. Ice is 7-8 inches thick, so we may get another week of fishing in.

Well my friends, I obviously didn't jinx the season by starting this thread. I've been getting out at different locations the last being New London Res. The ice was a solid 9 inches of hard black ice. Between 3 of us we didn't fair well at all. Maybe it's just a case of learning the lake. My best outings so far have been farm ponds. We're heading to Pymatuning next week for the very first time ever.  Does anyone know where a good point of entry would be? I'm not looking for anyone's spot ( I'll find them on my own) , just a parking lot to start out from.

I still have safe ice as off today, 2/9/25. Fishing has been slow with lots of nibbles from dink gills. Bait stealers mostly. I have been using the smallest tungsten jigs with 1/2 of a waxie and still don't get many hooksets. Crafty little rascals!
